Adapted from the best-selling eponymous novel written by Freida McFadden, ‘The Housemaid’ is a psychological thriller movie directed by Paul Feig. The narrative revolves around a young, struggling woman named Millie, who hopes to move on from her troubling past by taking control of her life. In order to start afresh, she lands the role of a live-in housemaid for a successful and wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester. The picture-perfect life of the Winchesters begins to turn upside down with the arrival of Millie.
Not only does the new housemaid have ulterior motives, but the married couple also seems to be concealing a string of sinister secrets within their luxurious estate. Featuring some of the renowned names in Hollywood, including Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, the suspenseful and seductive tale unfolds mostly in and around the sprawling Winchester residence, which serves as an additional character that drives the narrative forward.
The Housemaid Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘The Housemaid’ was conducted entirely in New Jersey, particularly in Bergen County, Morris County, Clifton, Montclair, and Jersey City. According to reports, principal photography for the Paul Feig directorial got underway in the first week of January 2025 and continued for a couple of months before wrapping up in the first week of March of the same year. As the movie premiere approached, Caitlin Bea took to social media and shared her experience of being on set. She stated, “Back in January, I got the most incredible opportunity to hang out on set of The Housemaid movie! Seeing one of my favorite thrillers brought to life was so surreal…Meeting the cast, director, author @fmcfaddenauthor (!!) and new friends made this the best day ever.”
Morris County, New Jersey
A significant chunk of ‘The Housemaid’ was lensed across Morris County, situated only 30 miles away from New York City. In particular, the filming unit set up camp on the campus of Saint Elizabeth University at 2 Convent Road in Morristown. The private Catholic university’s Santa Maria Hall served as a prominent production location for multiple scenes. Moreover, a few school scenes were shot in and around The Peck School at 247 South Street in Morristown. In the same town, the cast and crew were also spotted taping several sequences at The Madison Hotel at 1 Convent Road.
The Winchesters reside in a luxurious and expansive property, which was depicted by a sprawling historic mansion situated at 158 Green Avenue in the borough of Madison. Built in 1909, the house spans 1.86 acres and features six bedrooms, a three-car garage, and six and a half bathrooms. The expansive lawns and the driveway also make several appearances in numerous scenes involving the Winchester couple and the housemaid, Millie.
Bergen County, New Jersey
The production team of ‘The Housemaid’ also utilized the locales of Bergen County, located in the northeastern corner of the state. During the early stages of filming, the cast and crew members were spotted taping various key portions in the village of Ridgewood, which is also a suburban bedroom community of the Big Apple. The Green Way Markets at 112 North Maple Avenue and a few surrounding areas, including parks, were transformed into film sets. In addition, the borough of Cresskill also served as a filming site for the Sydney Sweeney starrer.
Other Locations in New Jersey
For the purpose of shooting, the filming unit of ‘The Housemaid’ also traveled to other locations across New Jersey, including the city of Clifton in Passaic County. To be specific, the cast and crew members took over Rutt’s Hut at 417 River Road, where they recorded multiple cafe scenes for the Amanda Seyfried starrer. The township of Montclair, situated in Essex County, also hosted the production of the thriller movie. The Lackawanna Station at 1 Lackawanna Plaza, DanceWorks Studios at 127 Grove Street, and Rosedale Cemetery at 408 Orange Road are some of the locations in Montclair that feature in the film. Additional portions were seemingly shot in Jersey City, the county seat of Hudson County.
