Where Was The Miracle Season Filmed? All Shooting Locations

Under the direction of Sean McNamara, ‘The Miracle Season’ is a 2018 biographical sports drama movie inspired by the true story of the Iowa City West High School volleyball team. The team is led by the talented Caroline “Line” Found, who has led her team to victory on many occasions. On a fateful night, Line decides to pay a visit to her cancer-ridden mother at the hospital. Unfortunately, she meets with a fatal accident that leaves the entire community shaken to its core. Despite the tragedy, the volleyball team’s tough-love coach, Kathy Bresnahan, continues to hold practice.

Amidst the aftermath of Line’s sudden demise, Kathy reaches out to Line’s best friend, Kelley, requesting her to lead the team and prepare for the state championship. Although Kelley is hesitant to take her late friend’s place as the team captain, she eventually agrees, as Line would also want the same. Now, the high school volleyball team must band together and win the tournament for Line. Featuring Helen Hunt, Erin Moriarty, William Hurt, Nesta Cooper, Tiera Skovbye, and Danika Yarosh, the inspiring tale unfolds in Iowa and multiple schools as the team competes against several strong opponents.

The Miracle Season Filming Locations

Although ‘The Miracle Season’ is set in Iowa City, it was filmed in its entirety in British Columbia, particularly in Metro Vancouver. According to reports, principal photography for the Erin Moriarty starrer got underway in early August 2016 under the working title of ‘Live Like Line’ and continued for more than a month before wrapping in September of the same year.

Metro Vancouver, British Columbia

To paint the visual canvas of the inspiring journey of the West High School girls’ volleyball team, the production team visited several spots in the Metro Vancouver region in the westernmost province of British Columbia. Since ‘The Miracle Season’ features a significant portion set on the premises of a school, a few educational institutions in Vancouver were chosen to double up as filming locations. In particular, Killarney Secondary School, located at 6454 Killarney Street, served as a shooting site for some sequences.

Additionally, shooting took place at Britannia Secondary School at 1001 Cotton Drive in the Grandview–Woodland neighbourhood. The cast and crew were also spotted shooting at John Oliver Secondary School. Situated at 530 East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, it has also assisted the production of ‘Riverdale’ and ‘ What Goes Up.’ A few scenes were lensed at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena at 6066 Thunderbird Boulevard within the University of British Columbia (UBC).

The iconic stadium arena is known for its first-rate main rink, practice rink, and ice hockey surfaces, as well as its scoreboards, all of which are complemented by a range of seating options. For the purpose of filming, the team also stopped by Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church near 41st Avenue & Mackenzie Street. Shooting was also carried out in the city of Langley. According to reports, a portion of the lensing was also conducted at 843 248th Street. Located in the heart of the Lower Mainland region, the city helped recreate the small town vibe of the Sean McNamara directorial.
