Based on Sue Nyathi’s acclaimed eponymous novel, Netflix’s ‘The Polygamist’ is a South African drama series that explores the polygamous life of a self-made CEO and banker named Jonasi Gomora, who maintains multiple relationships beyond his wife, Joyce, a social media star. He not only has a secret second wife but also a mistress and a girlfriend. Despite having his personal life in control for so long, his scandalous affairs slowly begin to bleed into his career and unravel his business empire as the women in his life fight for his attention and wealth, besides his love. Starring Gugu Gumede, S’dumo Mtshali, Kwanele Mthethwa, Kenneth Nkosi, and Noluthando Shabalala, the show is set against the diverse and vibrant backdrop of Zimbabwe, as Jonasi struggles to keep his personal and professional life under control.
The Polygamist Filming Locations
‘The Polygamist’ is filmed entirely in South Africa, especially in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the drama series got underway in June 2025 and went on for a couple of months before wrapping up in August of the same year. Although the tale of polygamy unfolds in Zimbabwe, the makers utilized the vast and versatile landscape of South Africa to bring the narrative to life.
City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa
All the pivotal sequences for ‘The Polygamist’ were shot across the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, which comprises the city of Johannesburg and its surrounding areas. Nicknamed The City of Gold, Johannesburg served as one of the primary production locations for the drama series. In addition, the cast and crew were also spotted taping important scenes in the city of Sandton, which doubled as the Zimbabwean city where Jonasi resides and runs his business.
The establishing shots of Sandton and Johannesburg feature numerous businesses, landmarks, and buildings, including the Metropolitan Sandton Office, Sandton City Office Tower, Michelangelo Towers, The Leonardo, the Schlesinger Building, the Marble Towers, Montecasino, Nelson Mandela Square. Apart from ‘The Polygamist,’ the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality has hosted the production of multiple movies and TV shows over the years. Some of the notable ones include ‘Hotel Rwanda,’ ‘The Giver,’ ‘Hector and the Search for Happiness,’ ‘Money Monster,’ ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ ‘Woman of Desire,’ ‘Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema,’ ‘The Looming Tower,’ ‘Canterbury Tales,’ and ‘Queen Sono.’
