The creation of Matthew Parkhill, Prime Video’s ‘Young Sherlock,’ is a British action-packed mystery drama series that chronicles the origin story of Sherlock Holmes and his early adventures. An Oxford University student, Sherlock is still young and raw and has yet to prove himself in the world of espionage. As he finds himself in the middle of a murder case at the university, he realizes that his freedom is at risk. To prevent that, the 19-year-old takes matters into his own hands and sets out to solve the murder mystery, thereby unraveling a global conspiracy. Adapted from Andrew Lane’s book series titled ‘Young Sherlock Holmes,’ which in itself is based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s original ‘Sherlock Holmes’ stories, the crime show unfolds in 1870s Oxford and various other parts of the world as the globe-trotting adventure of teenage Sherlock alters the course of the rest of his life.
Young Sherlock Filming Locations
Production on ‘Young Sherlock’ is conducted primarily in England and Wales, specifically in Bristol, Somerset, London, Oxford, and Cardiff. Minor chunks of the show are also shot in Andalusia, Spain. According to reports, principal photography for the debut round of the Prime Video series got underway in July 2024 and continued for several months before wrapping up in late February 2025.
Bristol, England
Many pivotal sequences for ‘Young Sherlock’ were lensed in and around the ceremonial county and city of Bristol, which is situated on the River Avon. As the city stood in for 1870s Oxford, the production team redressed several streets and neighborhoods of Bristol for filming. The Georgian House Museum at 7 Great George Street, Bristol Cathedral Choir School on College Square, Portland Square in the St. Paul’s area, and the Corn Exchange on Corn Street are some of the establishments that make an appearance in the series.
Numerous exterior portions were reportedly recorded on Frog Lane, Deanery Road, All Saints Lane, Small Street, and Queen Square. In January 2025, the cast and crew were spotted taping multiple scenes on Tailors Court off Broad Street and the surrounding areas. Furthermore, they took over the Underfall Yard at Cumberland Road in Bristol.
Other Locations in England
For the purpose of shooting, the filming unit of ‘Young Sherlock’ also traveled to other locations across England, including the ceremonial county of Somerset. To be specific, the market town of Shepton Mallet hosted the production of the series, as a quiet backstreet and the Shepton Mallet Prison on Frithfield Lane were utilized to shoot key portions. During the two-week filming schedule in Somerset, they also recorded a few scenes in Cornhill. Moreover, important scenes for the Hero Fiennes Tiffin starrer were lensed in the capital of England and the United Kingdom, London. The Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre on Belvedere Road features in the show. Since the series is set at Oxford University, the cast and crew also set up camp at Duke Humfrey’s Library, which is located in the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford.
Cardiff, Wales
In January 2025, various areas of the city of Cardiff were turned into film sets as the production team took over an industrial estate in Saint Mellons, a district located in eastern Cardiff. They also shot several pivotal scenes in and around the Glamorgan Building at King Edward VII Avenue in Cathays Park. Great Point Seren Studios at Wentloog Avenue in Cardiff also hosted the production of ‘Young Sherlock.’ The film studio is home to four different sound stages, workshops, production offices, costume facilities, and more amenities, making it an ideal filming destination for different kinds of projects.
During a conversation with Business News Wales, Simon Maxwell of Motive Pictures, who is overseeing physical production of ‘Young Sherlock,’ stated, “It’s a total pleasure filming here at Great Point Studios in Wales with all that the country has to offer – from world-class crews to some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes and locations. It’s a perfect locale to bring to life the vivid story world of Young Sherlock and to showcase the quintessential Britishness of Holmesian lore.” Furthermore, the seaside village of Ogmore-by-Sea, in the Vale of Glamorgan, also seemingly served as an important shooting site.
Andalusia, Spain
A significant chunk of ‘Young Sherlock’ was also reportedly taped in the autonomous community of Andalusia. In the city of Jerez de la Frontera, the cast and crew members shot important scenes at the municipal facilities on Calle Paul and the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art at Avenida Duque de Abrantes, s/n, reportedly in the month of December 2024. Meanwhile, in the city of Cádiz, the Plaza Argüelles was transformed into the Paris Commune of the 1870s. In addition, Calle Fermín Salvochea also hosted the production of the mystery show. The cast and crew members were also spotted lensing key portions in and around Casa de Pilatos at Plaza de Pilatos, 1, in Seville’s district of Casco Antiguo.
