ABC’s comedy-drama series ‘Fisk’ centers on Helen Fisk and her colleagues at Gruber & Fisk Solicitors, a Melbourne-based wills and probate firm. The show explores workplace dynamics, encompassing themes of loyalty, professional relationships, friendship, and ambition. The chaotic and often messy struggles between the main characters are the most important aspect of the series. There are several interesting characters that make the show an intriguing viewing experience. One such character is Bubby, who leaves a solid impression on the minds of the audience. His character arc and mysterious behavior lead to certain important plot points in the third season, which adds to the entertainment. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Bubby Aloysius Marner is Melissa’s Sock Enthusiast Son
Bubby is first mentioned when Roz looks to hire a new mediator to work with her at “Conch Mediation Services.” Despite being Melissa’s (Ray’s Romantic Partner) son, he has never met his mother’s lover. Ray describes him as a go-getter who works at Melissa’s “Sock Salon.” It is made clear from the introduction of his character that he is obsessed with socks and their design. He is seen for the first time when his mother brings him to Gruber & Fisk for a job interview with Roz. The young man initially annoys George by repeatedly questioning him about his socks, and also uses the word “sock” instead of “sick” to popularize his own urban slang. He hilariously compliments George’s fashion by saying, “That’s sock.” Later, he also annoys Roz during the job interview by insisting that she call him “Bubby.”
Bubby also takes out his driver’s license to reveal his full name, “Bubby Aloysius Marner.” Roz is confused whether his name is short for “Robert” or “Rubbert,” which makes the situation even funnier. He gets the job at Conch Mediation Services, but starts to occupy Helen’s office space, much to her dismay. He seems totally out of touch with the legal field and constantly comes up with silly questions, and also dumps his soda cans in Helen’s dustbin. The funny boy also leaves the office early on his first day and then vapes near the office staircase on his second day. He displays utter carelessness when he fails to remember important details about a case when asked about it by Roz, as he refuses to take notes, claiming that his mind is enough to remember everything.
The absurdities of his actions only keep proliferating. The young man also forgets Helen’s name and the fact that he had met her before, which confuses her. The next day, Bubby doesn’t come to the office, which leads Roz and Ray into a dispute about still letting him work at the firm. Ray requests that his sister not fire his lover’s son, as it would affect his own romantic prospects. At a later stage, he also asks Roz to let him vape inside the office and also start working late, which only complicates things further.
He forgets Helen’s identity again while vaping and chugging soda repeatedly inside the office. In perhaps one of the funniest moments of the season, the sock enthusiast quits his job at Gruber & Fisk as he finds it too boring. The soda drinker later becomes a spokesperson at his mother’s company called “Sassy Socks.” As the season reaches its conclusion, the vaping guy is adopted by Ray, who intends to marry Melissa. Bubby’s character arc is arguably the funniest of the season, despite him appearing in just one episode.
Sam Campbell’s Performance Brings the Funny Bubby Marner to Life
Bubby’s nonchalance and ignorant attitude lead to rib-tickling moments in the show, which adds to the entertainment. His unique screen presence makes the character unforgettable. Despite appearing in a single episode, Sam Campbell’s portrayal of the soda drinker is memorable. Bubby’s relationship with his mother Melissa leads to pivotal moments in the season. Samuel “Sam” Campbell is an Australian actor and stand-up comedian, who is also an accomplished writer, known for writing and co-creating the TV series ‘Nippers of Dead Bird Bay.’
His acting career started with a short film called ‘Heidi Fires Everyone,’ following which he was involved in shows like ‘Dirty Bird’ and ‘Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared.’ The comedian won the Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His recent acting stints include ‘Long Head’ and ‘Expanded Minds Only.’ After studying animation at the Queensland University of Technology, he started to pursue comedy, which later led him to acting. The actor’s portrayal of Bubby in ‘Fisk’ is a standout performance that leads to increasingly funny situations. He continues to receive accolades for his comedy skills, the most recent being the Chortle Award. With his comedic talent and acting prowess, he is sure to keep audiences entertained in the future.
