Wolf King Season 2 Recap

Drew Ferran realizes early on that the life of a would-be king isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be. In fact, the only positive aspect of the title seems to be that he has been able to elect Hector as his Chancellor. Other than that, the young man has to attend long-winded meetings, stand in for portraits, and, worst of all, think about marriage. Naturally, Princess Gretchen of the Foxloards remains the most suitable candidate for a fiancée. Nonetheless, when Drew attempts to propose to her on a stroll, he ends up saying all the wrong things. By the end, the Princess runs away in tears, seeking solace from her parents’ tomb. Unfortunately for her, Lucas, the Lion Prince, is waiting for her there with his menacing magister Vankaskan. Although Gretchen’s friends attempt to help her, the werelion and the Ratlord manage to make their escape with the subjugated princess.

In the aftermath, Drew remains reluctant to take the matter to the council. Instead, he wants to track Gretchen down all by himself. As a result, he ends up recruiting Hector’s help, who uses his teachings of necromancy to raise an undead soldier, who reveals useful information alongside foreboding warnings. Although Hector tries to stop the wolflord and Whitley from sneaking out of the kingdom at first, insisting this is a job for the army, he eventually comes around. As such, he ends up helping them escape from under Bergan’s nose. The latter, who has coveted Hector’s Chancellor title from the beginning, uses this instance to discharge him from the council. Furthermore, he sends his son, Broghan, to retrieve his daughter, the future king, and the Hedgemoor Princess from their enemies’ clutches.

On their journey, Drew and Whitley run into many dangers, including an undead soldier who ends up infecting the latter. This takes them to the kingdom of Haggard, where they gain a new enemy, Count Kesslar, and a new ally, Baron Ewan, a strong magister. Meanwhile, Bergan receives a message from Leopold, who is still holding some small ground in Highcliff. Nevertheless, the Queen remains wary of his claims of wanting to negotiate surrender. Eventually, her mistrust is proven right when the Lion King uses the meeting as an ambush, which ultimately leads to Staglord Mikkel’s death. Simultaneously, Hector finds himself in a pickle after his conniving brother, Vincent, learns about his necromancy studies.

Although the older brother remains timid, an argument between the two accidentally results in Vincent’s death after he falls off the banister. Weirdly enough, in the aftermath, the magister finds himself haunted by the dark ghost of his brother. On the other hand, Drew and his friends arrive at Cape Gala, the kingdom of Horselord Conrad. Despite the lord’s initial hospitality, he proves himself to be a traitor who is working with Lucas. As it turns out, the young Lion Prince has received the help of his father’s allies in Bast. Around the same time, reinforcements also arrive in Highcliff for Leopold, leaving Bregan and the others little time to evacuate. Ultimately, as two different battles break out in tandem, Drew and the Catlords’ other enemies once again find themselves on the losing side.

Wolf King Season 2 Ending: Who Saves Drew? Why?

Once Lucs gains the backing of his cousin, Orsino, the tide shifts in his favor. Conrad helps him lure Drew into a trap, which entraps the other werelords. Meanwhile, Trent’s allegiance to the werelions helps them trap Drew, pushing him into a torture room with Vankaskan as he tries to get the young lord to sign a confession rejecting his identity as Werger’s heir. Although Gretchen and Whitley manage to escape their cells by then, thanks in part to Broghan’s sacrifice, Ewan ends up betraying them. He uses his mind control powers to put them under and transports them to the outside of the kingdom walls. In their absence, Vankaskan continues to torment Drew, lying about the death of his friends and using Trent’s life as unfair leverage. Nonetheless, the Ratlord’s manipulations only work for so long.

Eventually, Drew’s anger takes hold, compelling him to shift into his full wolf form. As he fights Vankaskan’s army of the undead, he manages to use their attacks to get out of his silver bindings. Alas, it also ends up costing him his left hand. By then, Whitely and Gretchen also manage to corral troops and storm Cape Gala. Once the werewolf delivers Trent to safety and convinces him to run for his life, the lord finds himself on the edge of a tower with nowhere to go but down. With the odds stacked against him, he decides to take a leap of faith and plunges into the open waters. Unexpectedly, he is saved from the fall by a flying werelord who snatches him up and delivers him onto a ship. To Drew’s horror, the vessel is captained by none other than Count Kesslar.

Count Kesslar is a relatively new character about whom minimal information seems to be available. He’s a villainous werelord who can take the form of a goat. He and his men are known for snatching up people from around the continent and selling them to underground fighting pits. In Haggard, he had managed to take over the entire kingdom by forcing the weak Baron Ewan into creating mind prisons for every citizen. Ultimately, it’s clear that the older man can only spell trouble. Now that he has Drew in his clutches, with Scoria as his final destination, it’s clear that he didn’t make the rescue out of the goodness of his heart. Previously, he had mentioned how a werelord’s presence in the fighting pit could be a lucrative opportunity. Therefore, it is likely that he only has menacing things in store for the young Lord. Nonetheless, Drew seems determined to break free from the villain’s hold and fight his way back to his friends.

Why Did Ewan Betray Drew? Why Was Conrad Working With Lucas?

In Cape Gala, Baron Ewan and Lord Conrad’s betrayal comes as the last straw that tips the scales out of Drew’s favor. After the victory in Highcliff, the werelord, Lyssia, entertained the prospect of a future away from the catlords’ rule. Nonetheless, Gretchen’s abduction and Leopold’s mind games put the same future in jeopardy. Everything begins to crumble once the Catlords of Bast officially send in the reinforcements for the werelions. Yet, it’s Lyssia’s own, Conrad and Ewan, who deliver the final blow that seals the fates of Drew and the others. The Horselord works with Lucas from the beginning. Furthermore, there’s some insinuation that the young werelord isn’t nearly as open-hearted as he claims to be. Although he advocates for the virtue of hospitality, holding games and feasts for his guests, his kingdom simultaneously keeps hundreds of Romaris in peril outside its kingdom walls.

On the other hand, Ewan remains cowardly from the beginning. Under Kesslar’s rule, he had agreed to put his people in a trance, watching him disappear one by one rather than take a stand against his occupiers. Therefore, it’s no surprise that he sells Drew out for a chestful of treasure, even if it is with the intention to rebuild his burnt-down kingdom. Conrad’s situation seems to be a little different. Rather than monetary gain, the Lord had submitted to Lucas due to simple intimidation. He knew that with Orsino by his side, the Lionlord could bring great ruin to Cape Gala. Simply put, Leopold’s loss hasn’t lessened the threat of the Catlords’ influence over Lyssia. Nonetheless, in the end, both Lords come to regret their decisions. For the same reason, they team up with Gretchen, Whitely, and the Romaris, helping them take back the kingdom from Lucas.

Do the Catlords Take Highcliff Back? Does Leopold Become King Again?

Initially, Queen Tilly’s plan is for her people to evacuate Highcliff, but Leopold’s attack on Mikkel goads the other lords to prioritize a war for an evacuation. For the same reason, Bergan puts workers in place to forge weapons rather than prepare the ships. However, what he doesn’t know is that the Lion King has a greater plan in play here. At the end of season 1, he sends out one of his men, Trent, to take his ring to Bast and bring reinforcements from the other Catlords. As such, unbeknownst to Bergan, a fleet is currently on the way to help Leopold regain his power. By the time this becomes evident, it’s already too late to conduct a full-fledged evacuation. Still, as the foreign troops arrive and a war breaks out in the kingdom, Tilly and the others attempt to flee for their lives.

While Bergan recognizes the error of his ways and encourages Vega to leave with an injured Manford, he himself decides to stay behind in an effort to fight Leopold. Nonetheless, he ultimately loses the battle. Thus, at the end of the day, the Lionlord finds himself on his throne once again. However, danger arrives from the last place that he expects it. After winning the battle in Cape Gala, Lucas and Orsino make their way back to Highcliff. There, the cousin encourages the young Lion Prince to fight for his own benefit rather than continuing to take orders from his father. As a result, Lucas, hungry for more power and control, kills Leopold, cementing himself on the throne of Highcliff. It’s likely that the Catlords had lost faith in the old King following his defeat at the hands of the Wolflord. Thus, Orsino’s push for the change in power could have been an intentional and planned outcome. Either way, with a new King on the throne, things are bound to change for the kingdom and the rest of the continent, likely for the worse.

Does Drew Save Trent? Do the Brothers Make Up?

Ever since season 1, a prominent part of Drew’s emotional narrative arc stemmed from his distraught relationship with his brother, Trent. The latter does not take well to the discovery of his half-brother’s werelord identity, especially once it arrives on the tail end of their mother’s death. Clouded by his prejudice, he believes that Drew is the one to blame for their mother’s passing. Therefore, even after his biological father and the latter’s adoptive father, Mack, dies saving his younger son’s life, Trent continues to hold hateful beliefs about him. For the same reason, he works for the werelions, desperate to take revenge on his brother.

Nonetheless, in Cape Gala, everything changed between the two brothers. Trent sets up a trap for the werewolf, which leads to a massive battle between the two. Yet, in the end, Drew refuses to fight against his brother any longer, insisting on welcoming him with open arms even when the other man carries a weapon. He insists that since the two are brothers, there can be no real bloodthirsty rivalry between them. This becomes a pivotal moment in their dynamic that opens Trent’s eyes to his misgivings. Afterward, Drew continues to sacrifice his own life for the latter’s survival at the high towers of the palace. Therefore, it’s likely that Trent has recognized his own faults. Yet, with Drew’s abduction at the hands of Kesslar, many complications lay in the path of a possible reunion between the freshly reconciled brothers.
