Prime Video’s ‘You+Me – Against the World’ or ‘Toi + Moi: Seuls contre tous’ is the story of Alma and Vadim, who are both passionate about filmmaking. They enroll in the same filmmaking course in college, where they first cross paths. Although they come from very different backgrounds, Alma and Vadim connect emotionally through their shared passion for film. The two of them initially find it difficult to tolerate each other’s differences, but heartfelt conversations help them get over them. Alma’s family wants her to pursue law and is unaware of her being a film studies student.
While their friendship gradually leads to a romantic connection, Alma and Vadim find themselves being controlled by forces beyond their control. While Vadim struggles with dangerous secrets, a mysterious stalker repeatedly contacts Alma, warning her to stay away from Vadim. The stalker also threatens to expose secrets that could upend Alma and Vadim’s lives. With the odds stacked against them, both Alma and Vadim are forced to confront difficult questions and make choices that may cost them everything. SPOILERS AHEAD.
You+Me – Against the World Plot Synopsis
Alma Lancaster is a teenager with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. She stays with her father, Edward, and mother, Marie. Also part of the family are Alma’s brother, Basile, and sister, Lily. Edward wants Alma to move to Paris, where she can take over his law firm. However, Alma secretly enrolls in a filmmaking course at college, while pretending that she is pursuing a law course. Vadim Arcadi is a quiet, secretive, and seemingly angry student who is also enrolled in the filmmaking course. He is friends with Félix, and the two of them always have each other’s backs. Félix and Vadim are both under the observation of Oscar, who is their youth counselor. Oscar is the one who helped both Félix and Vadim get out of the foster care system.
In class, Vadim and Alma are paired together for a short film project, which is a major part of their grades. Despite coming from two very different backgrounds, Alma and Vadim develop a unique chemistry, shaped by their love for movies and filmmaking. Alma’s best friend, Clem, warns her that Vadim is dangerous and may also be involved in drug dealing. Vadim and Alma’s bond also angers Tim, Alma’s boyfriend. Eventually, Alma and Vadim come up with a touching story for the short film, and also grow closer. After Tim repeatedly questions her about Vadim, Alma breaks up with Tim. Alma and Vadim get physically intimate and commit to each other. While things appear to be going smoothly, a mysterious stalker haunts Alma.
The stalker anonymously sends messages to Alma’s phone, warning her to stay away from Vadim. The messages get more frequent, and the stalking intensifies. The stalker secretly sends a video of Alma and Vadim dancing to Edward, who suggests that Alma be careful. Alma also learns that Vadim is actually involved in drug dealing, which disturbs her. She tells him to stay away from her and accuses him of lying. Alma also finds herself in a difficult position when her filmmaking ambitions no longer remain a secret. With the stalker’s threat still present and their relationship under strain, Alma and Vadim face difficult choices.
You+Me – Against the World Ending: Do Alma and Vadim End Up Together?
Alma and Vadim cross several hurdles to find love and truly appreciate each other’s passions. However, their budding relationship is always threatened by forces beyond their control. After Alma learns that Vadim is a drug dealer, she admonishes him for hiding the truth and tells him not to see her again. But things change during the spring break when Vadim crosses paths with Alma and makes a heartfelt confession. He reveals that Oscar is not really his youth counselor, but a drug dealer and his boss. Vadim says that he and Félix have been working under Oscar for a while because he has supported them when they needed it. However, Oscar controls Vadim and Félix, using them to carry out risky drug sales and blackmailing them into submission.
Vadim tells Alma that his life changed after he met her and that she gave him hope that things could change. The two of them share a passionate kiss and get back together. But their joy is only short-lived, as problems arise unexpectedly. Alma keeps receiving threatening messages from the mysterious stalker, who is asking her to stay away from Vadim. The stalker also sends Edward a video of Vadim and Alma. After this, Edward questions Alma about her dating Vadim, causing more chaos. Alma later learns that Clem recorded the video, but is not the one who sent it to Edward. Clem reveals that she has been dating Oscar, who anonymously forwarded the video to Edward. Shocked by this, Alma runs to warn Vadim. However, Oscar shows up at Vadim’s place and assaults him, leaving a few injuries.
Oscar warns Vadim not to pursue a different life with Alma, but to keep working for him as a drug dealer. Later, when Alma and Vadim meet and get intimate, they reaffirm their loyalty to each other, but a nasty surprise awaits them. The cops show up and arrest both of them for dealing drugs. Oscar orchestrates this by anonymously giving false information to the cops. Even at the police station, Alma and Vadim stay close, unwilling to be separated. Since Edward is an influential lawyer, he is able to bail Alma out, but refuses to help Vadim. Edward hopes that his daughter stops seeing Vadim and live according to his rules. Later, when Alma talks to Edward, he makes her a cruel offer. He agrees to help bail Vadim out if Alma promises to stop seeing Vadim, quit her filmmaking course, and go to Paris to join Edward’s law firm.
Without any other option in front of her, Alma chooses Vadim’s safety instead of her own feelings. She writes Vadim a letter, saying that she will always choose his well-being over anything else, no matter what she has to sacrifice. Alma thanks Vadim for showing her how to love and appreciate the simple joys of life. She hopes their paths will cross again, so that she can tell him how much she loves him. A few weeks later, Vadim receives Alma’s photograph with a Parisian address. It is likely that Alma herself sent this to him, hoping it would allow them to resume their journey.
Vadim understands that he has every reason to hate Alma for leaving him. But what he desires the most is to be with her again. Vadim says to himself that he will never let go of Alma and will dare her to choose him. It can be presumed that he will travel to Paris, find Alma, and then handle complications that may arise. While Alma and Vadim are separated by circumstances, they might find a way to be together again, despite the odds being stacked against them.
Does Alma Become a Filmmaker? Does Vadim Claim His Inheritance?
Alma dreams of becoming a filmmaker because that is the only thing that drives her. She is able to appreciate the emotions that film gives access to, while also not being interested in the legal field that Edward wants her to pursue. Although it is difficult at first, Alma and Vadim get past their creative differences and come up with a good idea for their short film project as part of the course. The short film that they make centers on love and the union of distinct personalities. Despite her deep passion for filmmaking, Alma soon realizes that not everything is in her control and that she may need to make major sacrifices to save the one she loves the most. As part of his conditions to bail Vadim out of prison, Edward makes strict demands of Alma.
One of these demands is that Alma permanently quit her filmmaking course and join Edward’s law firm in Paris instead. Even though she finds it difficult to let go of her love for films, Alma is forced to make a difficult choice and chooses Vadim’s safety instead. Alma sends a copy of her short film to her film studies professor, thanking him for inspiring her to dream. At this point, she quits her filmmaking course and travels to Paris, as per Edward’s plan. While she still loves films and wants to be a filmmaker, Alma has to choose a different path instead. In the future, she may achieve some level of independence and be free from Edward’s control. This might allow her to pursue filmmaking again and live her dreams. Ultimately, Alma sacrifices her career ambitions for the safety of the one she loves.
Vadim learns from Michelle that his parents had left him an inheritance before their deaths. To claim this, he must travel to LA and sort out legal issues. Because of Oscar’s stranglehold, Vadim is unable to move out of the country. The bail conditions require Vadim to stay in the country as well, preventing him from traveling to LA. A few weeks after he gets bail, Vadim is able to clear the charges against him, which finally allows him to travel to LA. He gets his inheritance and is now fully free of Oscar’s control, free to make his own choices. This will enable him to possibly hone his skills as a filmmaker and even travel to Paris to find Alma.
What Happens to Oscar?
Oscar targets Vadim’s vulnerability and uses this to control his life. While posing to the outside world as a youth counselor, Oscar exploits Vadim and Félix’s positions to force them to deal drugs for him and also to always stay in his control. He also doesn’t allow Vadim to explore a different path in life and keeps him confined. One of the most shocking moves that Oscar makes is to falsely build a case against Vadim for drug dealing. While Vadim eventually gets out of prison, Oscar’s fate remains uncertain.
It can be presumed that Vadim may expose Oscar’s wrongdoings in the future, once he has enough evidence against him. Whether or not Oscar faces legal consequences for his actions, he is no longer in control of Vadim’s life. Oscar is also guilty of stalking Alma and assaulting Vadim. If he ever faces questions from law enforcement, it is likely that Oscar will have to pay a heavy price for his actions and make amends to those he has affected.
