The third season of ABC’s hit comedy series ‘Abbott Elementary’ is scheduled to commence filming in Los Angeles, California, in early 2024. The mockumentary series follows a team of dedicated and enthusiastic educators, who unexpectedly come together in a Philadelphia public school. Despite facing numerous challenges, they are committed to helping their students succeed in life. Even though these teachers are outnumbered and have limited resources, they are still passionate about their work.
The series was created by Quinta Brunson, who also stars in the show as Janine Teagues. Her other writing credits include multiple episodes of ‘Quinta vs. Everything,’ ‘Up for Adoption,’ ‘Broke,’ and ‘Lazor Wulf.’ The Golden Globe Award-winning actress is also known for her roles in the shows ‘Miracle Workers,’ ‘Single Parents,’ and ‘Up for Adoption.’
The show also stars Tyler James Williams (‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’) as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James (‘Black Monday’) as Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter (‘Breaking News’) as Melissa Schemmenti, Chris Perfetti (‘The Resident’) as Jacob Hill, William Stanford Davis (‘Ray Donovan’) as Mr. Johnson, and Sheryl Lee Ralph (‘Instant Mom’) as Barbara Howard. The actors are expected to continue portraying their roles in the upcoming season.
The workplace comedy premiered on ABC in December 2021 and went on to achieve huge success, winning several accolades such as a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. While the plot details of season 3 have been kept under wraps for now, it is expected to follow the events of the previous season’s finale, in which the school goes for a field trip to the Franklin Institute.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Brunson divulged some details about how the story will move forward in the upcoming season. “In the second season, we really see them coming together as a crew to decide to protect the school they’ve all come [to] love and make it a better place. So, next season, I think it’d be fun to ask what happens when people have the opportunity to go on to bigger and better things and make massive change, so that’s what I’m interested in playing with,” said the creator.
While the new season was announced in January 2023, the production was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. With the actors’ strike still in action, the filming has been pushed to 2024 and is expected to begin after the same concludes.
Los Angeles served as a filming location for the previous seasons as well. The outdoor scenes of the series are filmed outside Vermont Elementary School in the city, while the interior scenes are shot at Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank, in Los Angeles County. The studio has hosted the production of several other sitcoms as well, including ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Friends,’ ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ and ‘Two and a Half Men.’
