Netflix’s Amulet Starts Filming in Los Angeles and Albuquerque in January

The feature film adaptation of Kazu Kibuishi’s beloved graphic novel series will soon enter production in two of the most prominent filmmaking hubs in the country! Principal photography for Netflix’s ‘Amulet’ will start in Los Angeles, California, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, in January 2025. Jason Fuchs is writing the screenplay based on a story he developed with Kibuishi. The project is backed by 21 Laps, with Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, and Shawn Levy attached as producers. The director and cast of the movie have yet to be announced.

The fantastical narrative revolves around a young girl who comes across a reality-bending amulet and enters an enchanting world with talking animals, robots, and ancient guardians. Emily Hayes moves into her ancestral home in the town of Norlen with her mother and younger brother after her father dies in a car accident. She discovers an amulet in her great-grandfather’s old house and puts it on, marking the beginning of a cascade of events that lead her and her brother into a captivating realm where they must save their mother from a monster.

As the narrative progresses, Emily and her sibling encounter a rabbit-like robot called Miskit, who becomes an unexpected ally and teaches the former how to tap into the amulet’s power. As their epic quest unfolds, the children become protectors of the new world against the Elf King.

Fuchs is known for writing ‘Argylle,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ and ‘Pan,’ starring Levi Miller and Hugh Jackman. His other popular credits include ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ and the sci-fi horror film ‘I Still See You.’ Fuchs is also behind the upcoming ‘It’ spinoff series ‘Welcome to Derry,’ which will serve as a prequel to the films, with events taking place in the 1960s.

Kibuishi is a Japanese-born American graphic novelist and illustrator who began his career with a webcomic series called ‘Copper,’ which follows a boy and his talking dog on surreal adventures. He also served as the editor for ‘Flight,’ an anthology comic series with innovative storytelling. Kibuishi published the first ‘Amulet’ graphic novel in 2008 and the ninth in 2024. He is also one of the executive producers of the feature adaptation.

Los Angeles offers a variety of production resources, including extensive studios, top-tier VFX houses, and a large pool of talented industry professionals who will be required to bring the world of ‘Amulet’ to life. Other fantasy movies shot in the city include ‘Van Helsing,’ ‘The Polar Express,’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ Albuquerque is a rapidly growing filmmaking hub that boasts unique desert landscapes, tax incentives, and an ever-expanding film infrastructure. Major projects shot in the region include ‘Let Me In,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ and ‘Odd Thomas.’
