Anthony Ramos’s ‘Molepeople’ Starts Filming in Bulgaria and New York in September

It was in October 2024 that ‘Molepeople’ was announced, and now, after almost two years, the movie is finally greenlit for production. The horror feature will star Anthony Ramos and Ben Mendelsohn in the lead roles. Rob Savage will direct, based on a script by Nathan Elston. Filming will take place in Bulgaria and New York starting in September this year.

The plot is as follows: Beneath Manhattan’s streets, something lurks. The cops see another vagrant’s corpse. But Jack (Ramos) sees his brother’s final message carved in flesh. Each precise wound, each harvested feature tells of something that’s evolved beyond mere killing. Jack wants answers. Jimmy (Mendelsohn), a homeless man who knew his brother, says they lie below. Together they embark on a nightmarish descent into the abandoned tunnels beneath the streets of New York City, where a twisted society thrives. Here, flayed bodies hang like trophies, screams echo throughout a myriad of chambers and halls, and this is an unflinching gallery of horror where even the shadows have appetites. In the subterranean darkness, survival means becoming as savage as what stalks you.

Anthony Ramos’s latest performances include the Assassin / Antonio in FX’s ‘The Beauty’ and Major Daniel Gonzalez in Kathryn Bigelow’s political thriller ‘A House of Dynamite.’ You may recognize him as Noah Diaz from ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ and Parker Robbins / The Hood in Disney+ Marvel’s ‘Ironheart.’ He was the voice of Piranha in the animated movies ‘The Bad Guys’ and ‘The Bad Guys 2,’ and also featured in ‘Twisters,’ a spiritual sequel to the 1996 film ‘Twister.’ Ramos has been cast as the voice of Bob the Builder in the upcoming live-action feature based on the British animated children’s television show.

Ben Mendelsohn has been a part of some very popular movies, including ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Australia,’ ‘Animal Kingdom,’ ‘Killing Them Softly,’ ‘Mississippi Grind,’ ‘Rogue One,’ ‘Darkest Hour,’ and ‘Captain Marvel.’ He has also starred in shows in ‘The New Look,’ ‘Andor,’ ‘Faraway Downs,’ ‘The Outsider,’ and ‘Bloodline.’ His latest performance was as Pastor Ron Smith in ‘Roofman,’ starring Channing Tatum as real-life thief Jeffrey Manchester. We will next see him alongside Sharon Stone and Anthony Mackie in David Mamet’s comedy movie ‘Speed the Plow,’ in Alejandro Monteverde’s Biblical drama ‘Zero A.D.,’ and in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Jo Nesbø feature adaptation ‘Blood on Snow,’ co-starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Eva Green.

Rob Savage is a common name in the horror genre, having helmed movies like ‘Host,’ ‘The Boogeyman,’ and ‘Dashcam.’ He is currently overseeing post-production work on ‘Other Mommy,’ another horror movie featuring Jessica Chastain, Dichen Lachman, Karen Allen, and Alejandro Nieves. The story follows Bela, an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems, who confronts a sinister entity that emerges from her closet. The presence, whom she calls “Other Mommy,” becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family. The movie will be released on October 9, 2026.
