Netflix’s ‘True Haunting’ showcases two stories of different individuals who claimed to have experienced paranormal or allegedly haunted events. The first was from Chris DiCesare, and the second came from April Miller and Matt Wilson, whose story unfolds after they moved into a new home in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Their story has been featured in the episode titled ‘This House Murdered Me.’ What was meant to be a fresh start soon turned into what they described as one of the most distressing periods of their lives. In the series, they recount what they reportedly witnessed, how they coped with the escalating events, and how they eventually escaped the situation.
April Miller and Matt Wilson Sought the Help of Paranormal Investigators to Help Them
Between March 2004 and August 2006, April Miller, a young Mormon mother from Salt Lake City, and her husband, Matt Wilson, claimed to have lived through a terrifying haunting in their new home in the Avenues neighborhood. April, who had become a mother at 16, had built a modest life for herself and her two sons, Nate and Shane, before meeting Matt. Together, they bought an old fixer-upper after their previous house was broken into. Shortly after moving in, they reported that strange events had begun. Shane claimed his imaginary friend “Benjamin” was pushing him on the swing. April also took on a new job working for an escort agency called Salt Lake Secrets to support the funds being invested in building the house. According to Matt, Shane started waking up screaming at night and would say that something was watching him from his closet.
The family allegedly heard voices, saw figures, and even guests reported seeing a man in their yard. April’s own reported experiences grew worse, and she said that she felt like she was being drowned in the old bathtub and heard a voice telling her to leave. Her mother, Pamela, allegedly experienced being dragged from bed while babysitting the children. When Matt supposedly found the words “this house murdered me” hidden beneath paint, they learned the previous tenant had taken his own life after his family suffered there. They called in a paranormal investigator who told them that a man named William had allegedly abused and murdered his children in the home, while his wife, Ruth, drowned herself in the tub. With help from a medium, they performed a cleansing ritual, which allegedly freed all the spirits. April and Matt worked on the house, but after a while, they could no longer bear to live in it.
April Miller and Matt Wilson are Offering Tools to Help Others Today
In the years following the alleged events that brought their story to light, April Miller (who now goes by April Wilson) and Matt Wilson took time to heal and rebuild their lives. Over the next two decades, the couple moved frequently, living in eight different homes before settling once again in Salt Lake City, Utah. While Matt has chosen to maintain a relatively private life, April has become a more public figure. She uses her platform to share her alleged experiences and the lessons she has drawn from them. Her first major public appearance came with Investigation Discovery’s ‘A Haunting: The Forgotten,’ where she revisited the reported events that had once consumed her family.
The story gained further attention with the release of ‘Harvesting Shadows: The True Story of A Haunting: The Forgotten,’ authored by Douglas Burchill and published in November 2015. April and Matt were active collaborators in the book and contributed with personal insights and accounts. The audiobook, narrated by Annie Weybright, whom the couple considers a key part of their creative circle, also helped bring their story to a broader audience. April and Matt have openly expressed gratitude toward their collaborators, crediting them for helping preserve the authenticity of their experiences and their emotional healing. In recent years, April has expanded her work beyond recounting her past to exploring themes of inner growth and self-reflection.
She has spoken publicly about her “shadow work” journey and is set to release Releasing Shadows: A Four-Week Journal Work Course in November 2025. Together, she and Matt also run a personal website where they share updates, offer workshops, and sell digital products such as the End-of-Life Digital Planning Guide and Shadow Work Journal. Professionally, April works as an Assistant to the Director of Engineering at the St. Regis Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. She has studied Human Services with a focus on Children and Family Services, along with minors in Psychology and Criminal Justice at SLCC Community College. She has also pursued studies in Accounting and Business at Eagle Gate College in Salt Lake City. Today, April and Matt appear to be living a stable and purposeful life, driven by their shared mission to guide others through transformation and healing.
