French actress Ariane Labed, of ‘Attenberg’ fame, will start filming her next project in Spain. Principal photography for ‘The Possessed,’ a witch-hunt drama, will begin this September. Ena Sendijarević wrote the story and will also direct. Set in 17th-century Europe, the story follows two women fleeing the witch hunts who create a refuge at the edge of the world, until a man becomes their unwilling captive and sparks a dangerous love triangle. The movie marks the English-language debut of Sendijarević. The rest of the cast is under wraps.
Ariane Labed made a breakout performance as the sexually inexperienced Marina in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Greek drama ‘Attenberg.’ She has collaborated with Yorgos Lanthimos on ‘Alps’ and ‘The Lobster.’ An actress with range, she also starred in Richard Linklater’s ‘Before Midnight’ and Garth Davis’ ‘Mary Magdalene.’ Many viewers will recognize her as Maria from Justin Kurzel’s ‘Assassin’s Creed.’ Her latest performance was as Zsofia in Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist,’ which came out in 2024.
Ena Sendijarević made her feature directorial debut with ‘Take Me Somewhere Nice,’ which she also wrote. It is a drama about a woman who leaves her mother’s home in the Netherlands and travels to her native Bosnia to visit the father she’s never met. She then directed ‘Sweet Dreams,’ which centers on tumultuous events triggered by the death of a Dutch sugar plantation owner who leaves his Indian Ocean island estate to his young illegitimate son, the child of his Indonesian housemaid. The movie was the Dutch official submission to the 2023 Oscars. ‘The Possessed’ is her third feature directorial.
Upcoming movies to be shot in Spain are Disney’s live-action ‘Tangled,’ starring Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively, and a ‘Terms of Endearment’ remake by Lee Daniels, featuring Oprah Winfrey.
