Historic traditions and unexpected health scares continue to run rampant in Port Wenn in season 2 episode 3 of ‘Best Medicine.’ The town is gearing up for an annual race, one where the racecourse is made up of crates floating on the water. The event happens to coincide with Dr. Eden Montgomery’s presence in town. Strangely enough, another coincidence happens when a resident consistently fails seemingly in response to the doctor’s singing. On the other hand, Martin finds his hands full in ensuring the participants of the upcoming race are physically up for the task. However, while checking up on the participants, he ends up discovering signs of testicular cancer in three different individuals. As a result, while the town readies itself to possibly crown a new crate race record holder, the local doctor finds himself with multiple mysteries on his hands. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Lorenzo’s Adverse Reaction to Eden’s Singing
Back in Port Wenn, Eden finds herself strapped in for an unpleasant time when the Salty Breeze’s Karaoke festivities stretch out late into the night despite her noise complaints. Around the same time, her attempt to help he boyfriend get over his blood phobia through intense and unexpected exposure therapy also proves to be a failure. Thus, batting a zero, she decides to at least try to fix the noise issue herself. Nonetheless, once at the inn, she and Best are treated to a serenade from Louisa. Naturally, this only fuels Eden’s feelings of jealousy toward the other woman and her apparent half-baked romance with Martin. As a result, the doctor decides to deal with this by making a play for the microphone herself.

Initially, the townsfolk, including inn owners George and Greg, are less than eager to pass the microphone onto the out-of-towner. Nevertheless, Martin stands up for her girlfriend, demanding that Port Wenn treat her with the same trademark hospitality it boasts about extending to others. Unfortunately, once Eden finally takes the center stage, her spirited performance doesn’t do her many favors. In fact, one member from the audience, Lorenzo, ends up collapsing on the spot. The next morning, he comes in for a check-up with Martin, who concludes that the fainting spell must have been a result of the drastic uptick in Lorenzo’s exercise regimen as he prepares for the crate racing event.
Three Male Race Participants Test Positive on Pregnancy Tests
After Lorenzo, Martin realizes that the upcoming crate race festival can potentially present a threat to the participants. The event itself is a feat of athleticism with little to no safety measures in place. For the same reason, he demands that all participants get their physical checkups to ensure they’re fit to undertake the endeavor before the competition. In the first round of tests, three different men, all non-locals, test positive for pregnancy. A positive pregnancy test result for cisgender males suggests the possibility of testicular cancer. Thus, Martin finds himself cornering these three patients again to share the potentially tragic news with them while asking them to provide further samples for a retest.

Surprisingly enough, all three men remain unbothered in the face of the cancer scare and refuse to do any more tests. With enough pestering, Martin finally discovers the truth of the matter. As it turns out, these three out-of-towners, working at Glendon Ross’ fish factory for the season, had all turned in fake urine samples. Their boss was worried about them testing positive for drugs, which would create unnecessary complications with their employment. Therefore, considering the tests were only required for participation in a local festival, he’d helped them forge their samples. However, this means the urine that showcases signs of testicular cancer belongs to Ross. Frustratingly, he refuses to take Martin’s concern for his health seriously.
Martin Wins the Crate Race and Solves Lorenzo’s Problem
In the lead-up to the crate race, Lorenzo faints one more time, coincidentally in tandem with another one of Eden’s singing attempts. Therefore, he begins to believe his condition is to blame for his condition despite the pair of doctors insisting that it would be medically impossible. Meanwhile, as the participants train for the upcoming race, Aunt Sarah ends up inadvertently becoming a mentor to a middle schooler named Peter. As he dedicates himself to her training, he showcases the potential to break her years-long record of crossing 31 crates before taking a fall into the water. Once Sarah notices the drive and promise in the kid, she decides to ensure Peter has a fair chance at victory. Apparently, Sarah, after setting the record years ago, had rigged the crates to ensure she holds on to the top spot.

Apparently, Sarah, after setting the record years ago, had rigged the crates to ensure she holds on to the top spot. Nonetheless, Peter’s determination has inspired her to finally play fair. The next day, the race commences. Even though the kid fails to break the record, he secures a spot in the top three for himself in the race. During this time, Lorenzo faints again, this time while ringing the traditional victory bell. As such, Martin realizes that his patient has a blocked carotid artery on one side of his body. This means repetitive motions, like the one required to ring the bell or “choo-choo,” along with Eden’s choice of karaoke song,” trigger his fainting.
With the diagnosis in place, the doctor is able to send Lorenzo to Bar Harbor, where he can receive the emergency treatment he requires. Afterward, something unexpected happens when Martin, who famously never partook in the race after a disastrous attempt as a child, decides to throw his hat in the ring. The only reason he does this is that he makes a bet with Glendon, wherein his win would convince the latter to see a specialist about his potential testicular cancer diagnosis. In the end, Martin ends up winning the race and breaking his aunt’s record, bringing an unexpected end to the festival. Glendon upholds his end of the bargain in the aftermath. Unfortunately, the results come back positive, confirming he has cancer.
