On a quiet winter day on January 29, 2011, the community of Ashburn, Virginia, was shaken when 21-year-old Bethany Anne Decker vanished without a trace. The disappearance of the devoted mother left her family completely heartbroken. The episode titled ‘Bethany Vanished’ of NBC’s Dateline sheds light on the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the questions it left behind in its wake. Through emotional interviews with her mother, sister, and grandmother, the episode dives into the grief they have been carrying on for years.
Kimberly Nelson Finds Strength in Her Partner After Her Daughter’s Death
Kimberly Nelson, also known as Kim, was overjoyed when she gave birth to her daughter, Bethany Anne Decker. When the 21-year-old suddenly went missing in 2011, the worried mother had a bad feeling. It ultimately took more than a decade for the investigation to result in criminal charges, leading to the conviction of Bethany’s boyfriend, Ronald Roldan, for her death. In January 2023, when Kim heard Ronald’s confession, in which he claimed Bethany’s death was accidental, Kim mentioned, “It was very hard to hear the disregard for human life.” She even bravely took to the stands to give a victim impact statement.
On the stand, Kim spoke about the 21-year-old, recalling, “I was a young mom. We were doing some growing up, together.” Currently residing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she now seeks solace in the presence of her husband, Alex Nelson. From going on romantic dates to enjoying activities like boating and camping, they never miss a chance to make memories. The couple loves traveling to exotic destinations around the world, with their most recent one being to Australia in June 2025.
In April 2026, Kim and Alex went on a camping trip near the Finger Lakes. Occasionally, the pair loves experiencing the stadium’s lively atmosphere while cheering for their favorite teams. Additionally, they always make time to cuddle with their two furry pups. Besides that, Kim often cheers her children on in different milestones of their lives. Yet the void left by Bethany’s loss continues to haunt Kim’s heart, leading her to reminisce about the good times she shared with her daughter.
Evelyn Bayles Leads a Life Centered Around Her Family and Healing
Evelyn Giordano Bayles had always fostered a close relationship with her granddaughter, Bethany. While speaking about the moment the 21-year-old abruptly said goodbye, Evelyn said, “Ronald was texting her every five seconds. She said she was going to stay the night, but when she came out of the bathroom she ran out the door, and I couldn’t stop her — I couldn’t save her.” After the devastating loss, she continues to hold the dearest memories of her granddaughter close to her heart. Before it changed her life, Evelyn graduated from Bacon Academy, a high school in Colchester, Connecticut.
Evelyn then earned an Associate’s degree in Elementary Education and Teaching at Eastern Connecticut State University. She completed another degree in Theology from Trinity College (now known as Trinity Washington University). She finally entered the workforce when she began serving as an Office Manager at Parmar Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in January 1999. In her personal life, she is completely dedicated to her family, especially her soulmate and husband, Ed Bayles. The pair currently resides in Freedom, Pennsylvania, where they spend their time playing in the snow and visiting beautiful places for dates. Evelyn finds peace in the melody of crashing waves, which often takes her to the beach alongside Ed.
Ashley Littlejohn is Making Her Mark as a Behavioral Health Technician
Ashley Littlejohn had always idolized her brave older sister, Bethany. Hence, after the 21-year-old unexpectedly disappeared when Ashley was a high school senior, the latter tried her best to keep hope alive. However, that gradually diminished as the years passed by. Ultimately, when Ronald pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, Ashley didn’t step back from giving a powerful victim impact statement in court in memory of her elder sister. Reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding Bethany’s disappearance, she stated, “I was in limbo for a year — I couldn’t mourn, or else it would be over.” Gradually, Ashley began moving forward with her life.
Ashley graduated from Stafford Senior High School before completing higher education. In July 2024, she began her professional trajectory as a Behavioral Health Technician and continues to work in that position. On the personal front, her life was filled with joy when she welcomed her daughter, Kaylee Anne Littlejohn. As of writing, Ashley lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she is embracing an independent lifestyle. Amid everything, there is never a moment when she doesn’t miss Bethany. During one such instance, she wrote, “Missing you today and every day, Bethany.” Luckily, whenever Ashley needs an escape, she turns to nature’s beauty for peace.
Robert Littlejohn Has Created a Meaningful Path Despite Years of Pain
As the youngest brother of Bethany, Robert received immense love from her. Hence, he never hesitated to confide in her about his life. He still remembers the feeling when she disappeared and revealed, “I locked up — from the time I was 13 until I was 19, I didn’t feel emotions. I learned hope was bad.” Yet, he hasn’t allowed the pain to define his journey. After graduating from Stafford Senior High School in 2016, his passion to serve his country led him to join the US Army as a Signals Intelligence Analyst in November of the same year. Robert eventually became a Signals Intelligence Analyst in the Army before returning in July 2022.
