The filming of Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX series ‘English Teacher’ is set to commence in Atlanta, Georgia, next month. The show features the creator Alvarez in the lead role as Evan, a gay high school English teacher navigating the challenges of his profession in Austin, TX. Evan and his colleagues try to maintain a balance between the evolving expectations of their students and the demands of the latter’s parents in a constantly changing world.
Alvarez has built a diverse portfolio with appearances in various successful shows and films. In the movie ’80 for Brady,’ he took on the role of ‘Derek’ in a story that follows a group of friends on a lifelong mission to attend the Super Bowl and meet NFL superstar Tom Brady. The actor starred as ‘Cole’ in the horror sci-fi movie ‘M3GAN,’ which is about a robotics engineer whose life gets entangled with the eerie evolution of a lifelike doll he creates for a toy company. His recent credits include Jack Johnson/Evelina in ‘A Spy Movie’ and Estefan Gloria in ‘Will & Grace.’ As a writer-director, he made the 2018 comedy ‘Grandmother’s Gold,’ ‘How to Be a Slut in America,’ and ‘Everything Is Free.’
In addition to Alvarez, Stephanie Koenig (‘The Flight Attendant’), Enrico Colantoni (‘Veronica Mars’), and Sean Patton (‘Maron’) will feature in the series. Beyond his on-screen role, Alvarez wears the hat of an executive producer, collaborating with Paul Simms, known for his work on the FX series ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ and ‘Atlanta.’ Jonathan Krisel (‘Baskets’ and ‘Portlandia’) and Dave King (‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘The Good Place’) also serve as executive producers. FX Productions is the studio.
“Brian is an incredibly talented writer, actor, and creator who has fully delivered on his vision for English Teacher,” expressed Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment. “Together with a creative team featuring Paul Simms and Jonathan Krisel, along with this brilliant cast, they have created a hilarious, original comedy that is fresh, engaging, and fun,” Grad added.
Echo, the principal location of the series, is one of the most significant entertainment production hubs in the country. Marvel Studios’ ‘Echo’ and Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ are two of the several popular projects filmed in the city.
