Dark Winds Season 5 Release Date, Cast, Plot

The fourth season of AMC’s ‘Dark Winds’ resolves the storyline of the missing Billie Tsosie, but ends on a massive cliffhanger that raises more questions for Joe Leaphorn and his future. While he was supposed to retire after solving Billie’s case, on the day of his official retirement, he receives a phone call revealing that his friend, Gordo Sena, has been murdered. The investigation into Gordo’s death will form the crux of the fifth season, which was renewed on February 5, 2026, ten days before the premiere of Season 4. Reportedly, production on Season 5 has already begun, with filming underway in Santa Fe, Mexico. Keeping up with the tradition of releasing a season a year, the eight-episode Season 5 is slated for release in 2027. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Dark Winds Season 5 Will Investigate Gordo Sena’s Murder

Life as a cop was almost done for Joe Leaphorn after he seriously considered resigning from his post as the lieutenant and moving on to other, perhaps quieter, endeavours in life. The day before his retirement party, he meets with Gordo. They were supposed to go on a fishing trip together, but Joe tells his friend that he is not in the mood for it at the moment. He also shares his second thoughts on retirement, and Gordo reveals that he had them as well. He confesses that he would have preferred to work until his last day, but his wife’s deteriorating condition made him give up work. Still, he did not give up on being a detective. It turns out that he has been looking into some old cases.

The next morning, when Joe arrives at the station, he receives a phone call about Gordo’s murder. With his close friend found dead, there is no way he is retiring now. Even if he had made up his mind to leave, the idea would be postponed until Gordo’s killer is found. One of the major clues so far is the fact that he had been working on a cold case, which is where Joe and his team will start their investigation from. Looking into Gordo’s life will give them a better sense of who his friends and enemies were. More importantly, if Gordo did die trying to solve a case, then that case would become a major subplot. This means that, once again, ‘Dark Winds’ will combine two or more of Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee novels to present a riveting season.

Dark Winds Season 5 Will Introduce New Characters

Despite his initial plans for retirement, Zahn McClarnon’s Joe Leaphorn will return to lead the fifth season of ‘Dark Winds.’ He will be joined by Kiowa Gordon’s Jim Chee and Jessica Matten’s Bernadette Manuelito. Despite their strained relationship, Deanna Allison’s Emma Leaphorn will also be a significant part of the story. Even though Gordo Sena is dead, A Martinez will reprise the role, most likely in flashback sequences. With more spotlight falling on Gordo’s life, Linda Hamilton will return as Gordo’s wife, Barbara. Apart from the returning cast, several new actors have joined the show.

Paola Núñez will play the role of Luisa Alvarado, a lead investigator for the U.S. Attorney’s office. Apart from her likely involvement in Gordo’s murder investigation, she also has a connection to Leaphorn. Martin Sensmeier has joined the cast as a former Vietnam veteran, named Terry Bai, who has a close connection to Chee. Noel Fisher has joined the fifth season as Michael Jorie, a dangerous and violent killer with a twisted moral compass. Devin Sampson-Craig will play the role of Daniel Ironwater Jr., who struggles with darkness following his experience in Vietnam. In addition to this, the show will likely add more cast members, including some high-profile cameos, like the ones featured in previous seasons.

Dark Winds Season 5 Will Continue to Explore Joe’s Dilemma About Retirement

While the murder investigation will be at the center of the Season 5 plot, the show will continue to explore the personal dilemmas of the characters. Joe’s decision to stay on as lieutenant may have been justified by Gordo’s murder, but there is still no clarity on whether he walked into the station that day to give up his badge or to continue his job. The season will go deeper into this question, exploring the true intention behind Joe’s decision, focusing on what he really wants rather than what he thinks Emma wants from him. His estranged marriage with Emma will also remain a pivotal point, though we might see it moving towards a resolution rather than getting all the more twisted.

Interestingly, Joe is not the only one reconsidering his position. In the Season 4 finale, we find Jim Chee looking at the card he received from FBI Agent Shaw, who wants to bring him back to the agency. While Chee has been down that road before, and it didn’t end as he had expected, he can’t help but wonder if things would be different this time. This is especially after he knows that Bernadette is Leaphorn’s natural successor, which doesn’t leave a lot of scope for him at the rez. At the same time, joining the FBI would effectively end his relationship with Bernadette, since her life is in the rez and she is not going to leave her home. This dilemma will remain a major point of conflict for Chee and Bernadette, throwing more drama into an already compelling murder mystery.
