Netflix’s ‘FUBAR’ begins with the Brunner father-daughter duo, Luke and Emma, discovering that they both work for the CIA and had been leading secret lives that they kept from everyone, including one another. Once their professional paths cross, things get very complicated, especially the dynamics between them. The impact of this revelation and the subsequent requirement to work together also influences their relationship with other team members. For Emma, a romantic relationship develops with Aldon, but things get very complicated over the course of two seasons. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Emma’s Change of Heart for Aldon Points Towards a Potential Romance
When Aldon met Emma, he was immediately captivated by her. He developed feelings, which he expressed through a kiss, but at the time, she was engaged to Carter. This complicates things, not just because of her relationship with Carter but also because of her professional ambition, which she does not want to push into the background for the sake of a romance that may or may not be doomed. In the second season, this dynamic continues as Aldon still has feelings for her, but she has other, more important things on her mind, like getting accepted for Unit 9, an elite CIA unit that is extremely selective.
What further complicates matters is the entry of Theodore Chips, a former British secret agent who went rogue and is now working for the bad guys. Despite working for the enemy, he flirts with Emma and tries to charm her into going on dates with him while they try to save the world. Initially, she shows no interest in him and is irritated by his advances. Slowly, she starts to warm up to him, and everyone else on the team, including Aldon, can see that. As their chemistry intensifies, it seems that Aldon’s plans of wooing Emma will never work out, but then, Chips turns out to be the villain Dante Cress, and that throws him off the board entirely.
In the end, Emma chooses to stay with her team and refuses to join Unit 9, even though she is offered the position. She tells Roo that she is not considering romance in her life because she is focused on advancing her career. There would be no point in indulging Aldon or anyone else in a relationship because once she joins Unit 9, she would have no time for anyone else. However, now that that thing is out of the equation, there is space to explore something more in her personal life. What’s more is that Emma notices how sensitive and caring Aldon is, apart from being a highly competitive professional. When she discovers that he gave his beloved pig, Hamsteak, to her niece, she is moved by his compassion and suddenly, she sees him in a different light.
FUBAR Season 3 Might Explore Emma and Aldon’s Romantic Relationship
This turn of Emma’s feelings is not sudden, because she did feel something for him when he kissed her in Season 1, but she told herself not to get involved with anyone because she thought it would hold her back. Her decision was informed by the relationship between her parents, which she thought broke down because of her father’s secret life as a spy. Even when they get back together at the end of Season 1, she watches them break apart again when Greta Nelso enters the picture. In the end, however, she discovers that the break-up was a ruse on her parents’ part. Her mother had been a part of the mission all along, and her father’s feelings for her never faltered.
This shows Emma that perhaps it wouldn’t be so difficult to make things work with the right person, especially if that person is in the same line of work and understands what her job demands from her. She wouldn’t have to keep secrets as her partner would go through the same things, and the relationship would make her better at her job rather than holding her back. This gives her the courage to take the first step as she asks Aldon to dinner with her. This shows that she is giving space for her feelings to develop.
However, it remains to be seen whether Aldon still feels the same way. Though he agrees to a dinner, he uses the word “friends” to describe their date, which means that he might have prepared himself to move on from Emma. The show’s next season is expected to delve into this tension, which would be interesting to watch as the tables would be turned this time, with Emma having feelings for Aldon, while the latter tries to be nothing more than friends with her. Or at least, that’s how it might be in the beginning. Eventually, the story is bound to bring them together to reveal whether or not they work out as a couple.
