Fading Grandeur Ending Explained: Do Sofia and Leandro End Up Together?

‘Fading Grandeur’ is a Spanish comedy-drama series in which two double-faced con artists cross paths and try to use each other in a desperate ploy to aim above their station. Leandro Ventura comes from the noble Monsalvos family. As the power and influence of the name continues to dwindle in the modern world, he becomes obsessed with becoming the Grandee of Spain to elevate his social and financial standing. For the same reason, he jumps at the opportunity to have his daughter, Martina, married to the son of a Grandee, even if it comes at the cost of his family’s royal palace. While trying to put the property on the market, he meets a wealthy woman named Sofia Carrington, who appears to be a promising potential buyer. As a result, Leandro makes it his life’s mission to impress the woman with displays of grandeur that he doesn’t actually possess. Little does he know, the businesswoman herself is putting on a show. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Fading Grandeur Recap

The Monsalvos family may have had social capital and influence once upon a time. However, all of that has faded in the 21st century. Still, the eldest son, Leandro, who lives at the family’s palace, is determined to restore some of this lost glory by acquiring the title of Grandee of Spain. However, the divorced, unemployed man who mostly gets by on his butler’s pension has no tangible way of achieving this dream. Therefore, he’s uniquely overjoyed to learn that his daughter, Martina, has been knocked up by Guillermo Torresolano, son of Grandee Ricardo Torresolano. In fact, he even begins encouraging the young woman to get married and vows to foot the wedding bill to uphold traditions as the father of the bride. Yet, one problem remains. The Marquis simply doesn’t have the money to even sustain his own lifestyle, let alone fund the event of the year. Therefore, he tries to pitch the idea of selling the palace during lunch with his family.

Leandro’s parents and his younger brother, Gonzalo, are all firmly against this idea. Even so, he goes behind their backs and starts showing the property to prospective buyers. Although the house is filled with valuable artifacts and art pieces befitting a palace, there’s nothing particularly special about the property. In fact, financial neglect and lack of maintenance have left it worse for wear. Even so, Sofia Carrington, an affluent woman from a background in sustainable energy, expresses some interest in the palace and even makes an offer on the spot. In the moment, Leandro ends up fumbling the deal. However, in the aftermath, he becomes convinced that she’ll take the property off his hands soon enough. Consequently, the Marquis begins wining and dining Sofia, in the hopes of securing the deal.

Unfortunately for him, Sofia, whose real name is Conchi, doesn’t actually have the millions she had offered for the palace. In reality, she’s a single mother who works at a dry-cleaning shop. She has carefully built the persona of Sofia Carrington through stolen clothes and elaborate deceptions. At first, this was done only in pursuit of a thrilling adventure and an escape from the drudgery of her normal life. However, she digs herself into a deeper hole the more she meets up with Leandro. Likewise, the Marquis also continues to build lies upon lies to give off a sense of grandeur and success. Yet, he begins to grow suspicious when he notices Sofia sneaking away from her luxurious hotel and taking the subway to the poorest part of town.

Initially, Sofia is still able to make excuses for her out-of-character behavior. Additionally, Leandro’s grows fonder of her when the duo’s relationship takes a romantic turn. However, the pretend art curator is thrown a curveball when her ex-husband, recently out of prison, shows up. Once he learns about her connection to Leandro, he inserts himself into the dynamic as her business partner. His intentions are clear: he wants to rob the Marquis of the expensive artifacts inside his palace. Moreover, he demands Sofia’s help with the scheme and threatens to expose her charade otherwise. In the end, rather than coming out with the truth, she ends up helping her ex out with the robbery. Still, even after Leandro gets robbed and becomes the butt of the family’s jokes, he continues to trust Sofia. As a result, when the time arrives for his daughter’s wedding, paid for by her stepfather, Jamie, the Marquis invites the businesswoman to the event. In the end, this wedding becomes the catalyst in unraveling the several lies that have built up between the two.

Fading Grandeur Ending: Do Sofia and Leandro End Up Together?

The mutual attraction between Sofia, aka Conchi, and Leandro is part of the reason why their respective web of lies has gotten so out of hand. The former’s past with Tomas reveals that she used to be a con artist who would often run grifts with her now-ex. However, since having settled down into a stable life as a single mother, she has tried to stay out of such trouble. Even so, every now and then she puts on some fancy clothes, “borrowed” from the dry cleaners, and goes out on the town as her alter ego, Sofia Carrington. Her venture to the open-house listing at Monsalvos Palace was meant to be nothing more than one such play-pretend stint. Conversely, Leandro has never been able to make amends for the rustling influence of his noble name. For the same reason, he’s constantly lying to put on a more luxurious front than he can actually afford.

Therefore, Sofia’s constant dodging of signing the deposit contract should’ve ticked Leandro off enough to compel him to search for other buyers. Yet, much like how she constantly keeps coming back, he also consistently overlooks or makes excuses for her shady behavior. This is because, despite the walls of lies and deceit between them, the duo recognizes a sense of kindredship in each other. They both have the same dissatisfaction with their current lives that they try to overcome by fake displays of grandeur. Moreover, they’re the only ones who are insecure enough in their own stations to buy into the other’s charade. Nonetheless, eventually their respective lies come crumbling down at Martina’s wedding. The dress Sofia has stolen for the occasion happened to belong to Cotola Moscoso, a family friend of the Monsalvos, who is also at the event.

Ultimately, this becomes the catalyst in unraveling Sofia Carrington’s fake persona. After Cotola recognizes her as the woman from the dry cleaner’s store, her son, Enrique, also ends up innocently spilling the beans. In light of these truth bombs, the fake businesswoman has no choice but to confess. Leandro is taken aback by the revelation and fails to take action to prevent the other from taking her leave. However, later, the Marquis shows up at her door. Although the story ends before the details of this reunion can be revealed, Sofia’s blinding smile leads to only one conclusion. When Leandro arrives at her doorstep, it’s not with the intention of demanding explanations or compensation. Instead, he seems to want to embrace her for her true self regardless of everything that has happened between them.

In the end, the fact remains that despite the drastically different worlds that Sofia and Leandro come from, they seem to have more in common than not. They’re both aspirational individuals who would rather live in the fantasy of what they hope for rather than the bitter reality that they have been dealt. More importantly, unlike the others who immediately sniff them out as outcasts who don’t fit in, Sofia and Leandro are the only ones willing to entertain the idealized, if unrealistic, version of one another. Thus, now that the Marquis has found himself at his absolute worst, he realizes that the con-woman may just be the only one who can understand him. Ultimately, the story leaves things open-ended between the two protagonists. Yet, the fact that Leandro shows up at Sofia’s door at all suggests a promising future for the couple.

What Happens to the Monsalvo Palace?

The Monsalvo Palace remains at the center of both Sofia and Leandro’s storylines. Yet, in the end, both find themselves similarly exiled from it. The Marquis’ entire plan relies upon the sale of the property. Even though the palace belongs to the family, he’s the one currently occupying it as the primary residence. Although the eldest Monsalvo son has convinced himself this is because he’s his father’s favorite, such is not the case. In reality, his father had allowed him to reside at the family home after his marriage since he didn’t have any property of his own. Thus, much of Leandro’s grandiosity is directly tied to this place. Unlike the other nobles, like Gonzalo or Jose Manuel, Leandro has no alternative source of income. He relies on the dwindling family funds and his butler’s pension to sustain his livelihood.

As such, Leandro’s lack of competency also remains present in the Monsalvo Palace’s condition under his ownership. The property is poorly maintained, rats are abundant, mold is overpresent, and many wings don’t even have functioning electricity to cut back on expenses. Naturally, the Palace makes for a hard sale. For the same reason, Leandro zeroes in on Sofia, the only person who expresses a serious interest in buying the place. However, in order to make this a reality, the Marquis jumps through many hoops, not all of which are entirely ethical. After consistently badgering his father to sign over the property’s selling rights, he managed to finally convince him. Unfortunately, before the older man can reluctantly sign the papers, he passes away. In light of his death, Leandro ends up forging the documents. Naturally, it isn’t long before Gonzalo catches on to this deception.

As a result, he resorts to drastic measures. The younger brother starts the motion to have Leandro financially incapacitated from the Monsalvo family name. He even considers faking an evaluation result, but ultimately, tricking his older brother into it proves to be easier. Furthermore, the test results automatically come out against the Marquis’ favor, effectively leaving him disowned by the family. Even so, if that hasn’t already contested his right to the palace, another complication leaves him locked out of his home. As it turns out, while Leandro was at his daughter’s wedding, his butler, Fidel, was diligently working to have the locks of the house changed. In the end, the butler stages an aggressive takeover of the property, leaving the wannabe Grandee out on the streets. Even though Gonzalo expresses his intention to legally re-obtain the palace, it remains in Fidel’s possession for now.

Does Martina Get Married?

Initially, when Martina is presented with the idea of marrying Guillermo, she stands in firm opposition to the proposition. The pregnancy was a result of a one-night stand, which the Marquis’ daughter wasn’t entirely proud of. This is because the father of her child isn’t exactly the type of man she ever envisioned herself marrying. He’s socially awkward and nerdy, with his father’s money remaining as the only saving grace working in his favor. Nevertheless, both individuals’ families insist that it would be best for the child to grow up with two married parents. As such, their matrimonial union is confirmed. Surprisingly, Martina warms up to the idea of the marriage over time.

However, this isn’t because Martina develops feelings for Guillermo. Instead, she’s swayed by the reality of his family’s wealth. The young woman grows fond of the idea of becoming a duchess, which provides a social and economic status she isn’t too eager to shed. For the same reasons, in the end, she decides to go through with the wedding even when Leandro offers her an alternative outside the church doors. In fact, if the rumors circulating around the wedding guests are to be trusted, Martina isn’t even really pregnant anymore when the ceremony takes place. Whether this is due to a miscarriage, an abortion, or if the entire story is a lie, remains undisclosed. Either way, in the end, the daughter proves to have inherited her father’s social-climbing ways, prioritizing a title over anything else.
