Is Gajab Raat a True Story? Is Ajay Nirvit Based on a Real Police Officer?

Directed by Ritesh Shah, Netflix’s ‘Gajab Raat’ is an Indian crime thriller drama film that takes place during an unsettling and puzzling night in the life of SI Ajay Nirvit, a Delhi cop. The Hindi-language movie picks up when Ajay, used to bribes and favors, is conducting a raid, and is unexpectedly ordered by his superior officer to take over the case of a seriously injured girl. The unnamed girl is thrown out of a moving car in the middle of the street, causing onlookers to panic and take to social media. This creates a massive headache for Ajay as he carefully shifts the girl to Mansarovar Hospital, a large facility.

Lacking any clarity on the girl’s identity, he bides his time, looking for any opportunities that could make it a profitable case. When CBI and NIA officers arrive at the hospital, the case takes unexpected turns, placing Ajay in a complex moral dilemma. The movie, driven by the trials and tribulations of Ajay, is a nuanced exploration of several significant sociopolitical themes, while also being engaging and unpredictable.

Gajab Raat is a Fictional Tale That Explores Corruption, Morality, and Responsibility

Penned by Neeraj Pandey and Ritesh Shah, ‘Gajab Raat’ is an imaginary story that unfolds in a realistic and dangerous world. The narrative comments on the ways in which corruption manifests in crucial situations, exposing the true natures of characters. Central to the story is the fate of the girl and whether or not Ajay is able to determine who she is and possibly save her. Being a corrupt police officer, Ajay reacts to situations from a desire for profit. The narrative explores corruption not only from an economic perspective, but also from a moral point of view as well. It navigates morality, immorality, and amorality in all their complexities, often challenging Ajay and those around him. The story is also about the clash of different morals and how they alter the fates of characters.

‘Gajab Raat’ doesn’t strictly preach about right and wrong, but depicts the consequences of actions. One of the main parts of the story is its portrayal of responsibility, from the perspective of a police officer. It is a socially sensitive film that recognizes real issues like systemic negligence, compromise, and silencing of dissent. Along with the commentary on individual morality, it also sheds light on broader political issues like abuse of power. Responsibility is examined at both the individual and social levels, making the journeys of Ajay and others more personal. ‘Gajab Raat’ also comments on women’s safety, social media, public apathy, and the cost of justice in a broken system. One of the most crucial parts of the movie is the way in which it handles sensitive issues related to law enforcement in India and the challenges involved.

Speaking about the movie, co-writer Neeraj Pandey said, “Gajab Raat is a thriller where the choices that people make push them to a point where there are no easy answers.” Director Ritesh Shah added, “With the story unfolding over a single night, we had the opportunity to build a sense of urgency and keep raising the stakes as events unfold.” The film is a poignant take on several social realities, and asks different questions, while also providing layered answers.

Ajay Nirvit is an Imaginary Character Facing the Uncertainties and Challenges of Being a Police Officer

Ajay Nirvit is a fictional character whose moral complexity makes him unpredictable. Although he is a corrupt police officer, the narrative doesn’t portray him as a caricaturish representation of what such a policeman should be. Ajay has his own reasons for his actions and is very aware of their consequences. He isn’t made to appear heroic, but rather courageous. ‘Gajab Raat’ doesn’t glorify or celebrate his actions, but portrays them within the context of the case he is handling. Ajay’s character arc is not limited to a simple commentary on good and bad. More often than not, he’s a gray character whose greatest strength is his practicality. He is tasked with a case that he is seriously unprepared for, which eventually tests his skills as a police officer.

A fascinating part of his journey is how he adapts to the evolving situation and gradually understands the truth about the injured girl’s case. He doesn’t rush to do anything, but rather takes his time to assess the pros and cons of situations. These qualities make him a hard character to judge on a moral basis. On one hand, he appears like any other corrupt cop willing to bend the rules. On the other hand, he is also someone not completely devoid of empathy and humanity. In broader terms, Ajay is roughly comparable to Detective Alonzo Harris, Denzel Washington’s character in director Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Training Day,’ which is also a commentary on corruption.

Manoj Bajpayee, who portrays Ajay Nirvit, said “I have always been drawn to characters who are not easy to define, and this film gave me the opportunity to inhabit a world filled with suspense, moral dilemmas and questions of accountability.” In an interview with Variety India, Bajpayee added, “Honestly, I think Nivrit from ‘Gajab Raat’ would be fun to play. His mind is quirky and he is very unpredictable. So I just hope that people like it as much as I loved playing him.” Ultimately, ‘Gajab Raat’ and its layered exploration of Ajay Nirvit’s inner battles and decision-making in unpredictable situations make the movie more intense.
