In ‘Glory,’ the small town of Shaktigarh in Haryana, India, takes the center stage as fertile ground for boxing aspirations, along with menacing underground criminality. The town is home to Haryana Boxing Club, where the famous boxing coach Raghubir Singh trains numerous young boxers who all dream of becoming champions. However, the coach himself has one clear goal: producing the boxer who will win India its first Olympic gold.
This dream comes to a halt when a group of masked goons attacks his champion-in-the-making, Nihal Singh. The coach’s daughter, Gudiya, who was also dating the boxer in secret, is another casualty of the attack. As a result, her two older brothers, Ravi and Dev, who have strained relationships with their father and the world of boxing, return to the town with vengeance on their minds. The show’s notable focus on the boxing culture of Harayna casts a significant light on Shaktigarh and its boxing club.
Shaktigarh and Haryana Boxing Club are Fictional Elements That Mirror the Reality of Haryana’s Boxing Prowess
‘Glory’ strives to bring a realistic story about India’s boxing culture, particularly in regard to small towns in Haryana. However, instead of a biographical approach with any real-life individual at the center of the story, the show opts for a fictionalized perspective. Naturally, the fictitious characters and their storylines find a home in a similarly fabricated backdrop. Consequently, the Haryana Boxing Club and its hometown of Shaktigarh both remain limited within the confines of the series. It’s important to note that the town at the center of the story has no connection to Saktigarh, the similarly named village in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal.
Although there are a number of towns in Haryana with boxing clubs and academies that are known for producing boxing champions, the on-screen town and its club don’t have a direct counterpart in reality. Still, these aforementioned towns and boxing clubs serve as a notable source of inspiration for the creation of these on-screen elements. Reportedly, Haryana has a history of producing a high concentration of athletic champions. Statistically, it’s believed the state accounts for 20% of the Indian Olympic contingent. Namely, the Bhiwani Boxing Club from the eponymous town in Haryana has produced numerous Olympic-level athletes like Vijender Singh, Akhil Kumar, Vikas Krishan, and more.
On the other hand, another town named Rohtak also hosts a sports academy, which trained the Minakshi Hooda who won the gold medal at the 2025 World Championships. Over the years, experts have tried to pin down the reason behind this pattern, citing a variety of theories from the region’s farming culture and historical patronage of wrestling to past incentives by the government. Regardless of the explanation behind it, the Indian state evidently proves to be the boxing capital of the country. The show’s co-creator, Karan Anshuman, spoke to The Hindu about mining inspiration from such real places.
Anshuman shared, “Every boxer (in India) has to go through Bhiwani or Rohtak in Haryana to venture into international boxing. There are some families who put their 10-year-old kids in training just because they beat up their neighbor. These are all fascinating stories.” Through Shaktigargh and Haryana Boxing Club, the show endeavors to share these same stories. While this subliminal basis in real life allows the storytelling elements to gain a sense of realism, their explicit departure from a real-life town or establishment allows for a certain creative freedom that serves the overarching story. Although they’re ultimately fictitious elements, the town of Shaktigargh and its Haryana Boxing Club add authenticity to the show.
