Hell’s Kitchen Season 25 Episode 7 Recap: A Black Tie Affair

In Fox’s ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ the aspiring chefs face intense dinner services and difficult challenges to prove their skills to the presiding judge, Gordon Ramsay. In Season 25, episode 7, ‘A Black Tie Affair,’ the competition continues after Joy’s elimination, leaving the remaining contestants fighting to secure their place. However, the stakes rise as the contestants must prepare dishes for a gala event at Hell’s Kitchen in Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Adding to the excitement, winners from the previous seasons make an appearance, bringing a sense of legacy to the occasion.

The Contestants Face a Difficult and Special Black-Tie Gala Challenge

After the Blue and Red Teams return to their respective dorms, tensions rise as Sandra notes she believes Haley should have been the one eliminated. When the next morning rolls in, the contestants are welcomed in front of the kitchen by three violinists. Gordon reveals that they are celebrating the show’s 25th season today with a special black-tie gala. He also adds that they will be serving a special menu with some new additions, which will form the basis of the day’s challenge. He quickly explains that for today’s challenge, two contestants from each team will prepare appetizers, while two more will prepare a fish dish. Lastly, the remaining two contestants from each team must prepare a meat dish.

Gordon announces that the team with the most dishes selected will win the challenge and will have 45 minutes to craft those dishes. As time ticks by, the contestants rush to make their preparations. Haley and Nadia soon realize that they have both chosen scallops and similar ingredients. In her confessional, Nadia notes that she feels Haley will never change her ingredients since she always selects the safe choices. Hence, the former decides to pivot and make crab cakes. As attention shifts to the Blue Kitchen, Valentin says he is confident because he works at a fine-dining restaurant. So, he feels he has several good ideas up his sleeve, and now is a good time to tap into them.

With fewer than 20 minutes remaining, Miguel realizes that as he is working at his station, he has completely forgotten about the pork chop sitting on the grill. When he discovers that it is burnt, he decides to start over. As the final few seconds pass by, the contestants rush to finish plating their dishes. Once the challenge comes to an end, Gordon welcomes two special guest judges: the season 3 winner, Rock Harper, and season 23 winner, Kyle Timpson. The tasting begins with the appetizer from Haley, who has prepared pan-seared scallops. Kyle quickly points out that although he loves the bacon’s smoke, he would’ve removed the seeds from the Fresno chili peppers, but Rock notes that he likes it.

Miles and Valentin Help the Blue Team Become the Winner of the Challenge

The judges move on to Jonny G.’s scallops, which earn immense praise from Kyle and Rock. On Gabe’s turn, he reveals he has prepared tuna tartare, but Kyle points out that he would have liked to see more cooking in his dish. They next focus on Nadia’s crab cakes, which impress the judges. After a brief discussion, Gordon announces that the appetizer to be featured on the 25th-season celebration gala menu is Nadia’s. Kylie becomes the first chef to present her meat entrée to the judges. After tasting her grilled pork chop, Rock and Kyle compliment the competitor.

By the time the judges turn to Georgiana’s grilled ribeye, they question why she only has half of the dish on her plate. While Kyle tells Georgiana that he would’ve loved more salt in the dish, Rock remarks that he wanted more flavor. It is now turn for Miles’ marinated ribeye, which earns incredible compliments from the guest judges. After tasting Mike’s ribeye preparation, Kyle notes that the purée is slightly stiff. The last dish to be judged in this round is Miguel’s sweet heat pork chop with saffron rice. Rock promptly states that the dish needs more salt, while Kyle remarks that the rice would’ve been better with a little more saffron.

In the end, Miles’ dish gets selected for the meat entrée, helping the Blue Team earn a point. The fish round’s tasting begins with the rustic solid-plated monkfish prepared by Sandra, and it luckily impresses the judges. After tasting Dylan’s monkfish dish, Rock says the fish could be made more flavorful. As they move on to Valentin’s pan-seared Chilean sea bass, he receives several compliments. The final dish of the challenge is the marinated sea bass prepared by Mya. Fortunately, her dish also impresses the judges. The judges quickly excuse themselves to discuss the preparations they just tasted. Ultimately, Gordon announces that the final selected dish for the menu is Valentin’s, making the Blue Team the winner.

Dinner Service Begins With Some Chefs Facing Early Setbacks in the Kitchen

Once the guest judges bid farewell, Gordon declares that the Blue Team will receive the reward of an incredible cruise down the Mystic River, with incredible meals on board. He announces that the Red Team must prepare the caviar service and assist the florist with the flower arrangements for the gala. In the meantime, Mya decides to utilize her punishment pass and swaps places with Miguel to enjoy the relaxing experience. While the Red Team eventually focuses on preparing crushed ice to put the caviar on and bringing the flowers supplied by the florist in the dining room, the Blue Team focuses on their incredible time on the cruise. It is finally time for the Red and Blue Teams to begin preparing for another dinner service.

However, Sandra becomes concerned since she is on the fish station with Haley. Sandra feels that her opponent lacks awareness of stations, which can affect the service. As Hell’s Kitchen opens its doors for the gala, it welcomes members of the Connecticut State Legislature, local press, distinguished alums from past seasons, and Tribal Council members, including its chairman, Rodney Butler. Soon, the orders begin trickling in, and Haley notices that Gordon is looking at her in such a manner that she has to prove herself at the fish station. She soon faces a hurdle when she serves scallops to only one person, even though there are two orders. It leaves Gordon upset because he wants Haley to prepare the scallops for two people at once.

Back in the Blue Kitchen, Jonny G. is paired with Miguel, and although the former thinks that the latter is a weak chef, he feels Miguel can help considerably in the kitchen. On the other hand, Miguel notes that although he has had his ups and downs with Jonny G., they are still working together seamlessly. The teams eventually move on to the entrées, during which Sandra is responsible for making the sea bass. However, she reveals that it is a type of fish she has never cooked before and is terrified to prepare. When she brings it to the pass, Gordon quickly sends it back for refiring. He also notices that the Red Team’s kitchen is getting slow, and urges them to pick up the pace.

Sandra and Haley’s Inability to Handle Their Station Leads to the Loss of Red Team

Around more than 40 minutes into the service, Sandra presents Gordon with her second attempt at the sea bass, but Gordon quickly points out that it is not properly cooked. He sends it back to the kitchen to be refired. In the Blue Kitchen, Valentin and Dylan are working on the meat station. Shortly after, Miguel remarks that he feels Gordon loves “picking” on him, but he isn’t sure if the judge truly intends to do so. The Blue Team continues impressing the Tribal Council with their prompt delivery.

On the contrary, the Red Team faces a predicament, since the alums who ordered sea bass have not yet received their dish, while everyone else at the table has already received theirs. With Gordon’s patience wearing thin, he directs the Red Team to the back room and inquires about what is going wrong. When Sandra states that Haley is not communicating properly, he declares that at least one of them must lead. Once the team returns to the kitchen and still hasn’t provided the sea bass, Gordon asks Haley and Sandra to return to the dorm.

Moreover, Gordon instructs Georgiana to take over the fish station.  After a long wait, one of the show’s former competitors finally receives his sea bass. Following that, Mya, Nadia, and Georgiana move seamlessly through the remainder of the service. By the end of the service, Gordon announces that although the Red Team has finished in style, they are sadly the losing team because of the fish station. He then states before Nadia, Georgiana, and Mya that they already know who the nominees are for tonight’s elimination.

Haley’s Struggles at the Fish Station End Her Journey in the Show

As the contestants return to their respective dorms, Mike approaches Haley, who is clearly upset. She divulges that she really misses her child and that she is the only mother left in the competition. She further adds that she feels a shift within her team, as they have lost faith in her. In her confessional, Haley notes that speaking with Mike gives her a feeling of having pep talks with her older brothers. However, Mike reassures her that she is truly strong and capable, prompting her to express her gratitude for his support. Once the competitors gather in the kitchen before Gordon, he asks Haley and Sandra to step forward.

When Gordon asks Sandra what affected her performance tonight, she explains that she was focusing on both sides of the station, which eventually shifted her focus away from her own preparation. The judge then notes that no one is leading the fish station, and he only wants them to be the best cooks, even if they don’t get along. He also adds that he was disappointed that Haley was cooking one portion at a time while preparing appetizers. Haley quickly clarifies that she feels she was too invested in her head, but she has sacrificed a lot to be here. Furthermore, she notes that she has a 6-year-old child at home and is just trying to make her proud.

Once Gordon turns his attention to Sandra, she emphasizes that although she tried to communicate with Haley during the service, she didn’t hear back from her. After much consideration, the judge announces that the chef to be eliminated is Haley, noting that she became flustered tonight, which means she isn’t ready to become his head chef. In her exit interview, she expresses her gratitude to Gordon for the opportunity. Haley further states that she will never stop fighting for her dreams because the future has a lot in store for her. Following that, Gordon asks Mike to join the Red Team since they have two fewer chefs than the Blue Team. While Mya becomes happy with Mike’s addition since he is a strong cook, the Blue Team considers it a loss.
