Holly Bobo’s Murder Details and Investigation Timeline

While the small town of Darden, Tennessee, once held a reputation for being a quaint, low-crime suburb, everything turned upside down on the morning of April 13, 2011. After all, that’s when 20-year-old nursing student Holly Lynn Bobo suddenly disappeared from her family home, sadly never to be seen or heard from alive again. Her partial remains were found years later in 2014, by which point several individuals had been implicated, yet some proceedings are still ongoing 15 years later. All this, and much more, has been carefully chronicled in ABC’s ’20/20: A Deadly Scream’ to give us an insight into the matter.

Holly Bobo Was Last Seen Walking Into the Woods Alongside a Stranger

Holly Lynn Bobo was born on October 12, 1990, in the unincorporated community of Darden to schoolteacher Karen Bobo and excavating business owner Dana Bobo, as the younger of their 2 kids. She grew up in an incredibly affectionate, loving, safe household alongside her brother, Clint Bobo, who was 5 years older than her. He was reportedly as protective of her as their parents, owing to her essence. According to them, she was so empathetic and kind that it was instinctive for her to always offer a helping hand, so it was no surprise when she chose to pursue nursing after graduating high school.

In fact, by the time 2011 rolled around, Holly was attending the University of Tennessee at Martin at The Parsons Center in Parsons while still residing at home to save costs. Even aspiring social worker Clint still lived there, especially given the family’s tight-knit bond and the significance of their cozy single-story 3-bedroom home, which Dana built with his own two hands. Therefore, the morning of April 13 was rather routine for them: Dana left for work at 5:30 am, and Karen did the same around 7 am after handling some house chores, including preparing her kids’ lunches.

According to Karen and Dana’s accounts, the only difference from their usual daily pattern was that Holly was already up, studying for an exam she had later in the day, so they both got to say bye to her. Little did either of them know this would be their last interaction with their baby girl, as neighbors heard her scream “Stop. Leave me alone. Stop” at 7:45 am, shortly after which the 20-year-old was led into the nearby woods. Clint hadn’t heard the scream since was been fast asleep, but he did wake within minutes to his dog’s barking and witnessed his sister walking away with a man in camouflage.

Holly Bobo’s Remains Were Discovered Over 3 Years After She Went Missing

A lot of things happened in quick succession in a short window on the morning of April 13, 2011, but nothing was positive, because 20-year-old Holly still disappeared without a trace. According to the show, the neighbors were so bothered by the screams that they hadn’t hesitated to contact Karen at her workplace to let her know something could be amiss. The mother of two immediately called her daughter, panicking when she didn’t pick up or respond to texts. She then reached out to her son, who had just woken up and wasn’t as clearheaded as he would normally be.

Holly and Clint Bobo

Clint initially told his mother he had seen Holly talking to her boyfriend in the carport from the window upon awaking, assuming the man beside his sister in camouflage was her partner, Drew Scott. He knew the latter had plans to go turkey hunting on the fateful day, but had no idea he was already doing so over 30 minutes away on Karen’s mother’s property in southern Decatur County. Therefore, when Karen said, “Clint, that’s not Drew. Get a gun and shoot him,” the still groggy 25-year-old replied, “You want me to shoot Drew?” still believing the man was his sister’s boyfriend. It was only when he looked outside again and saw the duo walking into the woods that he realized the man was larger than Drew. He loaded a weapon and went outside, but they had already vanished.

Karen had already cut the call with Clint in frustration, shortly following which they both dialed 911 to report precisely what had transpired and why they believed Holly to be in danger. An official search for the 20-year-old thus began by 8:30 am, but alas, despite everyone’s best efforts, it was only her partial remains that were found by ginseng hunters over 3 years later in September 2014. According to records, her remains were discovered scattered in a wooded area in northern Decatur County, just off Interstate-40 and approximately 20 miles away from her hometown of Darden. Unfortunately, only her teeth, several ribs, one shoulder blade, and skull could be recovered, through which it was ascertained she was killed with a gunshot to the back right side of her head.

Authorities Interviewed Hundreds of Individuals in Connection With Holly Bobo’s Case

While the search party for Holly initially comprised the Sheriff’s Office and local volunteers, it gradually grew to include community members from across the state, the TBI, and the FBI. After all, there were a couple of small coin-sized bloodstains found near the 20-year-old’s car in the garage, which raised even more concerns, especially once they were confirmed to belong to her alone. Apart from the physical search, officials also looked into other avenues for answers, uncovering through tower pings that her cell phone moved north, entered the I-40 area, stopped for 20-30 minutes, and then traveled south on a different route. As different search teams followed this path over time, several of the missing young woman’s personal belongings were found at various spots, including both her phone and SIM card at the end.

Terry Britt

There was a period after weeks had passed and no concrete leads could be identified, during which many wondered whether Clint was telling authorities the full truth about what he had witnessed. It took some time as well as several interviews before he was cleared for good, but his parents stood by him every step of the way because they understood why he hadn’t immediately acted. In fact, Karen elucidated to ’20/20′ that He had “just woken up. He wasn’t comprehending everything that was going on.” According to records, Clint described the strange man last seen with his sister as possibly 5’10”-5’11” and weighing roughly 250 pounds, so that part of what detectives subsequently focused on.

It has been estimated that all the agencies involved combined interviewed hundreds of individuals in connection with Holly’s case before honing in on certain circumstantial evidence. That’s how they came to suspect Terry Britt – a local Darden man who had spent the majority of his life in prison on various charges of kidnapping and rape, plus he fit the description Clint had provided. He reportedly knew the woods well, having traveled through them countless times, and he lived quite close to the route traced by Holly’s cell phone. According to testimony from a US Marshals Service inspector during later court proceedings, Terry once allegedly made remarks suggesting he was involved in her disappearance, though he was cleared as a suspect after his wife corroborated his alibi.

Four Individuals Were Investigated as Suspects in Holly Bobo’s Case For a Relatively Long Time

While Terry Britt was initially suspected of being responsible for Holly’s vanishing and murder, he was cleared when his wife backed his claim that they had been together at the time of the crime. Former TBI agent Terry Dicus has long maintained his belief that the alibi is false, as there was a phone call between the couple on that fateful morning, and there would have been no need for it if they had indeed been together. Nevertheless, over time, the authorities took a different direction and ultimately identified four local men as suspects in the investigation. They were identified as Zach Adams, his brother John Dylan Adams, and their acquaintances Jason Autry and Shayne Austin. Two other individuals were arrested in connection with the same, but the charges against them were eventually dismissed.

Dylan Adams, Zach Adams, Jason Autry, and Shayne Austin

It’s unclear what initially led police to question these locals about Holly’s disappearance, but it has been alleged that there were rumors of boasting from Zach. They actually made the first arrest in March 2014, months before her remains were even found, reportedly starting with Dylan as he was taken into custody on an unrelated matter. Then, as per official records, they offered Shayne an immunity deal in exchange for information, but later voided it after receiving nothing concrete about any aspect of the crime. They believed he had at least helped the others dispose of Holly’s remains, as cell phone records proved he had been in contact with the brothers several times on the day of the crime. In the end, before he was ever even charged with any offense, he died by suicide in a hotel room in Bartow, Florida, in February 2015.

The Suspects Faced Legal Proceedings For Their Alleged Roles in Holly Bobo’s Death

Dylan reportedly confessed in March 2014, but later recanted, alleging his statements were coerced. They were what led officials to Zach, Jason, and Shayne, who believed Zach was the most culpable. In early 2017, Jason agreed to testify against his co-defendants in exchange for leniency, which is precisely what he did when Zach stood trial in September. He claimed he had met the other three on the fateful day to buy some drugs, only to find Holly dead in the back of Zach’s truck, but he later agreed to help dispose of her remains. In the end, despite there being no physical evidence tying Zach to the matter and the testimony of Former TBI agent Terry Dicus indicating another possible suspect, he was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and rape.

Zach was sentenced to life in prison with an additional term of 50 years on September 23, 2017. However, he maintains his innocence to this day and has filed appeals and petitions seeking to overturn his conviction on the grounds of new evidence. It is based on the report that Jason has since recanted his entire testimony against him, stating he was given discovery/evidentiary material as a guideline for what to say on the stand. On the other hand, on January 18, 2018, Dylan was sentenced to 35 years in prison after accepting an Alford plea on the charges of facilitation of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. Last but not least, on September 16, 2020, Jason was sentenced to time served and released from prison after he accepted a plea deal on reduced charges.
