Niamh Algar has landed her next major TV role! The actress will headline the upcoming Sky One series ‘Iris.’ The project’s filming will start in Sardinia and Rome, Italy, on May 20 and wrap by October. Janet Lin wrote the series, with Neil Cross serving as the showrunner. Larysa Kondracki is on board as the director.
The plot follows rogue quantum physicist Iris (Algar), who is on the run from tech billionaire Cameron, who seeks to capture her and use her unique skills to save his vast but threatened business. However, his ambition doesn’t end there, and he requires the scientist to solve a complex puzzle that poses an immense danger to everything he has built. Iris finds herself escaping her past, present, and future while traversing a dangerous world filled with secrets and deceptions. Given the filming locations, we can safely assume that beachside and historical backdrops will be prominently featured in the show.
Algar is known for playing Sue in Ridley Scott’s ‘Raised by Wolves’ and Sandie in the historical drama ‘Mary & George.’ The Irish actress has a packed filming lineup for the year. She is a part of the cast of the James Norton-starrer TV series ‘Playing Nice,’ which centers on the thought-provoking tale of two couples who discover that their toddlers were switched at birth. Her other upcoming works include Carl Tibbetts’ crime film ‘Sweet Dreams’ and the drama movie ‘Mooring,’ starring Charlotte Rampling.
Cross is a British novelist and scriptwriter known for creating Idris Elba’s ‘Luther.’ His credits include Apple TV’s ‘The Mosquito Coast’ and the horror film ‘Mama.’ Cross is also working on a US version of ‘Luther’ with Anthony McKenzie headlining the cast. The show’s writer, Janet Lin, is recognized for her work in Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton,’ ABC’s ‘Forever,’ ‘The Night Shift,’ and Hulu’s comedy series ‘The Orville.’
Kondracki is an award-winning director known for her work in ‘The Whistleblower,’ featuring Rachel Weisz, the crime drama ‘Power,’ and the espionage thriller ‘The Americans.’ The filmmaker recently had to suspend her work in Starz’s ‘The Venery of Samantha Bird,’ which was canceled with two episodes left to shoot. Another upcoming project of hers is Paramount’s 1980s-set action thriller ‘Bella,’ which is headlined by Samara Weaving. The film narrates a highly stylized story of a cop’s daughter fighting a crime wave in New York City with “sexy and unapologetic rock ‘n’ roll edge with the gritty heightened realism of ’80s New York City,” as per a statement by producer Craig Flores.
Some recent films and shows shot in Sardinia, Italy, include Disney’s live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Netflix’s ‘Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,’ and ‘Red Notice.’ The history-drenched city of Rome has recently become a hotbed for Hollywood productions, with several prominent projects shot in the region. These productions include Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Immaculate,’ Netflix’s ‘The Beautiful Game,’ ‘The First Omen,’ ‘The Tearsmith,’ ‘Supersex,’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.’
