On November 30, 2017, a quiet day in Baltimore, Maryland, turned into the beginning of a heartbreaking case when 31-year-old Jon Michael Hickey was killed in his apartment. It quickly drew attention as the circumstances surrounding his final moments raised troubling questions. The investigation uncovered a link to his girlfriend, Jennifer McKay, and the man, who was later identified as the killer. In the episode titled ‘The Killer on Camera 4’ of NBC’s ‘Dateline,’ the spotlight falls on the details of the case, including an identification by Jennifer that helped bring the killer to light. It also features interviews with Jon’s parents, the killer’s family, and the law enforcement officials who diligently helped serve justice.
Jennifer McKay’s Identification Became a Turning Point in Jon Hickey’s Murder Case
Jennifer McKay was just 4 years old when she first met Daniel Joseph Greene. According to reports, Daniel studied with her brother in Elementary School, and they all grew up together. Over the years, Jennifer developed a strong friendship with Daniel, which eventually turned into an intimate relationship. They began dating in 2012 and were in an on-again and off-again relationship until 2017. Shortly after their breakup, Jennifer got a fresh chance at love when she crossed paths with Jon Michael Hickey in October 2017. It wasn’t long before their simple connection blossomed into something more by the following month. She last met with Jon in early November 2017. They were reportedly supposed to meet, but she grew increasingly worried when she couldn’t reach Jon by texts or phone calls for about two days.

When Jennifer saw Jon’s car sitting in the same position in the parking space during those two days, she became alarmed. On November 30, 2017, she called 911 to ask for a welfare check on Jon. It ultimately led to the discovery of Jon’s remains in his apartment in Baltimore, Maryland. He reportedly died from a gunshot wound to the head. During the initial investigation, Jennifer reportedly informed the detectives that before calling 911, she had contacted Daniel to ask how to ask authorities for a welfare check. According to one of the detectives, she first stated that she and Daniel were friends. However, the investigation revealed that while dating Jennifer, Daniel was already married to Jennifer “Jenn” Greene and even had two children.

According to Jenn, she discovered the affair after finding thousands of text exchanges reflected in her and Daniel’s phone records. Jenn further revealed that Jennifer reportedly knew about Daniel’s marriage and family while the affair was ongoing because of their shared social circle. On December 4, 2017, investigators showed Jennifer a CCTV video that captured the suspect. Upon looking at it, Jennifer quickly stated, “It looks like Dan.” When she was asked what made her think that it was Daniel, she added, “The beard” and continued, “The build … it looks like his stature.” However, reports state that she was also uncertain because she felt the face of the man in the video was slimmer, and she didn’t recognize the jacket the killer was wearing. Ultimately, Jennifer’s identification led to the arrest of Daniel for the murder of Jon in December 2017.
Jennifer McKay is Seemingly Leading a Quiet Life Away From Public Attention
When Daniel’s jury trial commenced in June 2023, Jennifer played a significant role for the prosecution. According to reports, Daniel’s attorney had initially filed a motion aiming to suppress her in-court and out-of-court identification. They argued that police procedures were overly “suggestive” and Jennifer’s identification was “unreliable.” Initially, a Baltimore trial judge agreed and excluded the identification evidence. However, the Maryland Appellate Court later reversed the ruling, holding that Jennifer’s recognition of someone whom she already knew well was a “confirmatory identification.” The prosecution reportedly believed that Daniel killed Jon because of his jealousy over Jon and Jennifer’s relationship.

During the trial, Jennifer bravely took the stand and was cross-examined by the defense. When they asked, “You had problems with his nose. You also said his face is skinny. You had problems with the height and the weight, and the hair, and the facial hair, is that correct?” Jennifer agreed with them. However, she also mentioned, “You can berate me all you want. It’s Dan in the video.” Eventually, Daniel was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges and was sentenced to life in prison in February 2024. Following the sentencing, no public reports have provided any further information about Jennifer. As of writing, it appears that Jennifer has chosen to step away from the spotlight and maintain a low profile.
