The girl lived in spite of enduring severe injuries, but the perpetrator responsible for the crime remained at large. Many years later, the investigation led the detectives to a family man named Dennis Earl Bradford, who was tied to the case through forensic evidence.
Dennis Earl Bradford Was Accused of Abducting Jennifer Schuett Before He Passed Away
The beloved daughter of Elaine Schuett, Jennifer Schuett, lived in Dickinson, Texas, where she was a student at Silbernagel Elementary School. During the summer break of August 1990, the then-eight-year-old girl was abducted from her mother’s apartment and raped by a male individual before her throat was slit and she was left to die in an overgrown field. After about 12 hours, she was discovered in critical condition by a group of children. After she miraculously recovered from her wounds, she gave the police her account of what happened to her and even helped a sketch artist come up with a drawing of the suspect. Nearly two decades later, the investigation led them to a Dickinson High School graduate named Dennis Earl Bradford, who resided in the same area as the Schuetts at the time of Jennifer’s abduction.
In April 1996, he was arrested for an unrelated kidnapping case in Garland County, Arkansas, after which his DNA was collected and entered into the FBI database. For that crime, he was eventually sentenced to 12 years in prison, but was paroled in February 2000. So, several years later, when the suspect’s DNA found on Jennifer’s clothing was sent to the FBI Laboratory for advanced DNA testing, it matched Dennis’ DNA sample. Finally, on October 13, 2009, Dennis, a welder by profession, was arrested while he was on his way to work in Little Rock, Arkansas. At the time, he was married to Lisa Bradford and a father to two children. He was charged with attempted capital murder of Jennifer Schuett.
During a press conference following Dennis’ long-awaited arrest, Jennifer Schuett expressed her relief. “This event in my life was a tragic one but today, 19 years later, I stand here and want you all to know that I am OK. I am not a victim, but instead, victorious,” she stated. Besides thanking the investigators for their years-long determination to solve the case, she added, “I hope that I can be an example to others—you can have the strength to fight back. You can get justice, no matter how long it takes.” Months later, in the early hours of May 10, 2010, the suspect, Dennis Bradford, took his own life in his jail cell in the Galveston County Jail by hanging from a noose made from a bedcover. He was immediately rushed to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he was pronounced dead.
Jennifer Schuett Balances Her Family Life and Public Speaking Career
After surviving the traumatic ordeal in her childhood, Jennifer Schuett went through several other challenges in her personal life. In her 20s, she was in a relationship with Jonathan Martinez when she found out that she had hydrosalpinx, a condition where there is fluid blockage in the fallopian tubes, making it difficult for her to conceive a child. The couple then pursued IVF treatments, which allowed them to have their first child together — Jenna — who was born in November 2012. They embraced parenthood and became doting parents to their daughter.
On May 20, 2014, Jennifer and Jonathan finally made their relationship official in the eyes of the law and tied the knot in an intimate ceremony surrounded by loved ones. A couple of years later, by May 2016, their family of three had grown to four as Jennifer welcomed her second child, a son named Jonah. As of today, she is a public speaker and victim advocate who inspires others through her story of survival and advocates for DNA sampling in investigations. Now, Jennifer Martinez lives in League City, Texas, and enjoys spending time with her husband and two beloved children, celebrating festivals and achievements together.
