Justine Renee Vanderschoot was a 17-year-old high school student with a promising future ahead of her. However, her life came to a sudden halt in September 2003, when she unexpectedly went missing from her home in Auburn, California. It led to the beginning of an extensive search, which came to a heartbreaking end when her remains were discovered a few days later. In the episode titled ‘Justine’s Voice’ of CBS’ ’48 Hours,’ the spotlight falls on the heartbreaking investigation that revealed that people close to her were responsible for her death. Moreover, the episode features interviews with her loved ones and the authorities who helped solve the crime.
Justine Vanderschoot’s Remains Were Found in a Shallow Grave in California
Don and Lynnette Vanderschoot welcomed their blessing, Justine Renee Vanderschoot, into the world on March 30, 1986. She was raised in a household filled with the laughter and love of her parents and her older sister, Christine Vanderschoot. Growing up, Justine had always been the life of the party and made sure to make others laugh whenever she could. Her sister described her as someone charismatic and vibrant. In 1996, Justine and her family moved to Christian Valley. She was a student at Maidu High School and wanted to pursue a career in the fashion and beauty sector. There, she was actively involved in baseball, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading.
Justine also enjoyed spending time with her friends and was interested in cosmetology. She was just 15 when she first met then 17-year-old Daniel Lee Bezemer, AKA Danny, at a party. They quickly grew closer, and it wasn’t long before they began dating. Early in the morning of September 2, 2003, Lynnette noticed that Justine was not in her bedroom and her truck was gone from the driveway. Since her loved ones knew that the 17-year-old would never act like that, they quickly reported her missing. As the investigation commenced, authorities discovered that Justine had left behind her purse, identification cards, and a credit card.
On September 3, officials discovered Justine’s vehicle abandoned at a park-and-ride lot, but there were no traces of her. As the search for her continued, an unexpected lead directed them to a wooded area in Applegate, California, on September 18. There, investigators found a shallow grave covered by a blue mattress, in which they recovered Justine’s remains. Forensic experts found black tarry substances on top of her remains. The autopsy revealed that the same substance was present inside her lungs. It also revealed that dirt was found in her esophagus and lungs, leading the medical examiner to conclude that she was still alive when she was buried. Justine’s manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Officials Uncovered Inconsistencies in the Statements of the Killers
Initially, detectives questioned Daniel, who claimed that the night Justine went missing, he was at his apartment with his flatmate and friend, Brandon Alexander Fernandez. According to reports, after receiving a similar statement from Brandon, officials checked the 17-year-old’s cell phone records. It revealed that her phone was off at the location where her car was found, and that she had received the last two calls from Brandon. Meanwhile, his cousin, Clayton Cole, contacted the authorities, stating that on that fateful night he and another friend stayed at Daniel and Brandon’s apartment. In his statements, Clayton revealed that his cousin and Daniel had been gone that night and returned hours later.
Court records state that officials asked Clayton to call Brandon and record the call. In the recorded call, the latter asked his cousin to lie to law enforcement, claiming that Clayton and his friend were not present in the apartment that day. Further investigation revealed that both Brandon and Daniel had previous run-ins with the law. Upon speaking with Justine’s family and friends, investigators discovered that she had once given her boyfriend an ultimatum to choose between her and Brandon, as per records. After several months without contact, Daniel and his friend moved in together in 2002. Brandon’s then-girlfriend, Lindsey Morris, stated on the show that he did not like Justine.
According to Justine’s friends, her relationship with Daniel deteriorated after he allegedly became controlling and suspected that she was cheating on him. Investigative records suggest that when Brandon was again interrogated, he claimed he had been pulled over that day after running a red light and accidentally called Justine twice. In his statements, he claimed that he jet-skied all day with his co-workers, ran some errands, and then returned home before going to bed. He revealed that Daniel also came home after dinner with Justine’s family, contradicting their earlier statements that they were at their apartment that day.
Detailed Confessions Helped Investigators Arrest Justine’s Killers
Reports state that as officials confronted Brandon with Clayton’s call recording, Brandon told police that Daniel had tapped into Justine’s phone and claimed he believed she was cheating on him. In his statements, he insisted that he did not know Daniel would kill her while confronting her. Brandon claimed that all three were set to meet at the park-and-ride, but afterward Danny gave directions to a wooded location. He went on to say that Daniel then asked to speak with Justine alone, prompting Brandon to walk away for a while before he returned to find that Daniel was strangling the 17-year-old.
Although Brandon initially claimed that when he saw Justine, she was already dead, he later claimed that she was still alive, according to the records. Brandon then confessed to helping Daniel bury Justine’s remains and eventually led the officials to the remains of Justine on September 18, 2003. When Daniel was questioned, he admitted to strangling Justine but claimed that he had stopped midway while Brandon urged him to continue. In his statements, Daniel alleged that his friend had poured drain cleaner down Justine’s throat.
Daniel further claimed that he and Brandon had been digging the grave in the days leading up to the murder, according to court records. Ultimately, they were arrested and charged with murder. Daniel later gave additional statements to the prosecution, insisting that Brandon bought the chemical that was poured on Justine. On February 24, 2005, Brandon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, thus avoiding a jury trial. The following day, Daniel entered a plea agreement and pleading guilty to first-degree murder. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on March 9, 2005. That same day, Brandon received a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
