Keith Yunk Murder: Where Are Anita Yunk and Luther Basse Now?

In December 1991, the quiet neighborhood of Largo, Florida, was shaken by a tragedy when 31-year-old Keith Edward Yunk was killed in his home. It left his family and friends completely devastated, while officials searched for answers. The investigation soon revealed a deeply personal and complex case rooted in relationships, trust, and betrayal. The case is revisited in Investigation Discovery’s ‘Fatal Vows: Hell On Earth.’ It delves deeper into the timeline of the crime and how authorities tracked the killer. The episode also features interviews with his loved ones and the officials connected to the case.

Keith Yunk Fought Against His Attacker Before Passing Away From Stab Wounds

Keith Edward Yunk arrived in the world as a ray of sunshine sometime around 1960. A native of Tucson, Arizona, he grew up surrounded by the love and support of his parents, Rosie and Robert J. Keith. He was also close to his brothers, Kevin A., Kent D., Justin, and Garrett Goralski. Unfortunately, cracks began to appear in the marriage of Rosie and Robert, resulting in their divorce. Robert received another chance at love when he met Patricia A., and they soon married. Keith was a man of faith, which led him to become a member of Calvary Baptist Church. After completing his studies, he focused on his career. Keith began serving as a Technician and Field Supervisor at Air Control Systems Southwest Inc. in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Keith later moved to Woodbridge, Virginia, before relocating to Largo, Florida, in 1978. In adulthood, he married Linda, but the relationship didn’t work out, leading to their separation. Keith again became hopeful when he crossed paths with Anita J. Rawley. Just like him, Anita was also divorced. She had a son, Jason, from her previous relationship, and three other children from her previous marriage. Anita and Keith soon grew closer and finally got married at a beautiful venue around 1991. The blended family settled in the western part of Taylor Park in Largo. Keith loved his sons, Nicholas and Kristopher, and his daughters, Rachel, Rebecca, and Kimberley, quite dearly. Around 3 am on December 15, 1991, Keith and Anita were sleeping in their bedroom when they were awakened by an intruder wearing a ski mask.

The assailant attacked Keith and Anita with a knife and an axe and slit Anita’s throat. The man also attacked her on the head with an axe. Amid the invasion, Anita managed to grab a baseball bat and hit the attacker on the head. When Keith tried to fight off the intruder, the attacker hit Keith with the axe multiple times. Keith then asked Anita to grab a gun, prompting the assailant to flee the scene. Anita ultimately rushed to a neighbor’s home to call 911. When officials arrived, they found Keith dead from stab wounds. Anita was airlifted to the hospital and luckily survived the attack. Investigators soon discovered that the back sliding door of Keith’s home was open. They also noted that the house’s phone line had been severed, indicating premeditation. The autopsy determined Keith’s cause of death as multiple fatal stab wounds.

An Unexpected Witness Statement Led Authorities to Anita’s Ex-Husband

During the initial investigation, detectives learned that Keith’s ex-wife, Linda, lived nearby. Additionally, they discovered that Anita’s ex-husband, Luther Basse, lived in Boise City, Idaho. According to reports, when authorities questioned Luther’s girlfriend, Connie, she said Luther had gone hunting and would return that day. When Luther finally arrived home around 7 pm on December 15, he claimed he had been hunting elk near his residence in Boise. Since officials were unable to verify his alibi, they let him go after taking his blood, hair, and saliva samples. On December 16, law enforcement officials discovered a glove and a bloody mask on a golf course, located about a mile from Keith’s residence.

By December 17, as Anita survived her injuries, she reportedly told the investigators that she didn’t recognize the masked intruder. According to court records, she stated that she and Keith married six months after her divorce from Luther was confirmed. During the divorce, Luther was granted 2 weeks of supervised visitation with his kids. Detectives found that Luther was likely the person who might gain the most in the case of Anita’s death. Records specify that they believed Luther then wouldn’t have to pay child support and would also receive full custody of their children. Police records suggest that Anita recalled an incident when Luther allegedly became violent when she didn’t allow him to take their kids on a trip after the divorce. Although officials questioned Linda, the lack of evidence soon ruled her out as a suspect.

A breakthrough came on March 5, 1992, when Connie contacted the detectives and revealed that around 6 months before the murder, Luther had lied about going to the mountains when he instead went to Florida to Keith and Anita’s house. That revelation brought to light an unsolved case in which Keith and Anita found their phone line had been cut. In her statements, Connie told the officials that Luther had told her Anita was a bad housekeeper and mother. As per investigative reports, when Luther was questioned again, he claimed that he didn’t want to hurt Keith and confessed that he had actually planned to kill Anita. He reportedly admitted that he used an alias and a disguise to fly to Florida several times with the intent to kill her. Ultimately, Luther was arrested in early 1992 and charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree murder, and armed burglary.

Following the ordeal, Anita focused entirely on her faith, which helped her walk on the path of healing. During the incident, she was working part-time as a bookkeeper and was also a full-time mom. By September 2024, she shared about her involvement with the brand, Silver Sneakers. Whenever she gets the chance, Anita participates in charity and fundraising events, supporting noble causes like the American Cancer Society. Currently residing in Safety Harbor, Florida, she now finds joy in the presence of her children, especially Nicholas and Jason. Anita’s life was further lit up with joy when she welcomed her grandchildren.

Amid the whirlwind of life, Anita often reminisces about the incredible times she spent with her beloved father. To this day, she holds the memories of her dearest husband, Keith, close to her heart. On the other hand, the jury trial of Luther began in March 1993, during which the prosecution reportedly highlighted his confession, in which he said that it was his fourth trip to Keith’s home on December 15, 1991. Police records suggest Luther had confessed to buying a baseball cap, a wig, and a hunting knife before he took a plane to Florida under a false name. He admitted that after he fled from Keith’s house, he stole a bicycle and used it to reach the Tampa International Airport, before getting on a plane for home.

Ultimately, Luther was found guilty of first-degree murder, armed burglary, and attempted first-degree murder in early March 1993. On March 19, 1993, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for murder. He also received additional terms of 30 years in prison for attempted murder and 17 years for burglary. On October 20, 2001, Luther reportedly tried to escape from custody, which led to an additional indictment on the charge of escape. He was convicted of the charge and sentenced to 15 years in prison on November 25, 2003. As of writing, Luther is incarcerated at South Bay Correctional Facility in South Bay, Florida.
