The second season of Netflix’s ‘FUBAR’ brings forth a flame from Luke Brunner’s past in the form of Greta Nelso. The former German spy was supposed to have died in 1989, but somehow, not only did she survive, but she also made a name for herself by becoming the kind of person who is now reached out to by villains like Dante Cress, to help them destroy the world. Pitted against the woman Luke once was in love with, old feelings resurface, and it seems that Luke’s feelings for Greta might override his newly patched-up relationship with Tally. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Luke’s Gravitation Towards Greta Takes Him Away from Tally
When Greta Nelso enters the scene, Luke is taken by surprise because he thought she had died during a mission in 1989. The fact that they didn’t really break up, but were separated by death, makes their love story tragic, but it also points towards the fact that they still have unresolved feelings for each other. There comes a time when Tally starts to wonder if Luke would still have been with her if Greta were alive, and the more Greta flirts with Luke, the more those suspicions take hold. As the team chases after Greta to stop her from carrying out Dante Cress’ plan, everyone, including Emma, sees that Luke puts too much faith in Greta’s goodness. While he kills all of her henchmen, he never shoots at her. Rather, he saves her at every turn.
Despite all her actions, he keeps defending her and still believes that she is doing all this out of desperation to get out of her life as a mercenary. She has spent too many years trying to fend for herself while also looking over her shoulder, and because Cress’ money can help her with that, she is dedicated to seeing the job through. Meanwhile, Luke’s relationship with Tally takes such a deep tumble that it seems that the possibility of their second innings together has been erased because Luke seems too invested in Greta and the ways to bring her back to the good side. But then, it turns out that the display of his feelings was a part of an elaborate plan.
Greta Sees Through Luke’s Lies When No One Else on the Team Does
Luke is so good at disguising his feelings that even his daughter, Emma, starts to wonder if her father is falling for his ex all over again, and if it means that his judgment has been compromised. Greta, however, knows Luke better than this. While she is aware that he still cares about her and is happy to discover that she is alive, she also knows that this doesn’t change the fact that he is still in love with Tally. While he might say the words to her, she can see that Tally is still in his heart. However, she keeps it to herself until the time comes to say goodbye.
When Greta decides to sacrifice herself by going down with the nuclear missile that only she can stop from exploding, she tells Luke that she knows he doesn’t love her. She wishes for him to go back to Tally, so that at least one of them can have a happy ending. Fortunately for her, while the missile goes down, she survives, thanks to the tech she’d stolen from a secret government facility earlier. Luke is relieved to see her alive; however, it is clear that neither of them is under any delusion about them getting back together and giving their relationship another go. It died when she faked her death in 1989, and later discovered that Luke had moved on with Tally.
Though Greta may have left again with a broken heart, she doesn’t hold a grudge. In fact, it becomes more evident that she still cares for Luke because with the money that she got from Dante Cress, she has all those people killed who bought info about Luke and Emma from Boro. This shows that she will be around when Luke needs her, but until then, she will use the millions of dollars to live the life she always wanted, while Luke reunites with Tally and plans for their second wedding.
