Netflix’s ‘FUBAR’ follows the story of Luke and Emma Brunner, a father-daughter duo that discovers that they both work for the CIA. Luke has been working for the agency for years, but the dedication to the job has taken him away from his family, particularly his wife, Tally, whom he divorced several years ago. In the first season, he returns home with the intention of winning her back, and he succeeds at it. But then, the second season introduces Greta Nelso, a woman he used to be in love with before he met his wife, and that causes such friction between the couple that it seems their relationship might not survive the brunt of it this time. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Greta’s Arrival Causes Problems Between Luke and Tally
It’s not that Tally had never heard of Greta Nelso. When she and Luke first got together, he lied to her about his job, which he continued to keep a secret until he finally retired. However, he did tell her about other stuff, like the woman he used to be in love with. He told her that Greta had died in 1989, so Tally never had to worry about the ex coming back and trying to get Luke back. But this fear turns into reality when it turns out that not only is Greta still alive and just as, if not more, fabulous as she was when Luke last saw her, but she also has every intention of winning him back.
Tally believes that this is yet another thing that Luke lied to her about, but he tries to assure her that he was just as shocked about this development as she was. Still, as Luke and the team continue to chase after Greta, it starts to feel that he is more focused on his ex now, and Tally has been removed from the picture. The couple even had quite a fight about the whole thing, and to everyone around them, it looks as if Luke and Tally are done for good. Meanwhile, Emma also notices that her father insists on seeing the good in Greta, no matter what. This makes her wonder if her father has truly moved on from her mother and gone back to having feelings for Greta. Eventually, however, all of this turns out to be a ruse.
Luke and Tally’s Relationship is Stronger Than Ever in FUBAR Season 2
At first glance, it seems that Luke and Tally might break up for good, but later, it turns out that their conflict had been a facade. After Greta resurfaces, Luke and Tally have a session with Dr. Pfeffer, who tells them that they could pretend to fight and break up, and it might help the cause to get to Greta. Because she is still in love with Luke, when she finds out that he has broken up with Tally, she might want to come back to him, and that could be the way for Luke and the team to find and stop her.
While Luke is a little unsure about it, Tally accepts the challenge, and like a good CIA agent, she gives quite a performance which convinces everyone that her and Luke’s relationship is in tatters. They are so good at presenting this false narrative that even their daughter falls for it, and eventually, the plan works out. Greta, however, knows Luke better than that. While she doesn’t know about the fake breakup, she can see in Luke’s eyes that he loves no one but Tally, and she tells him as much when they bid each other goodbye. In the end, Luke and Tally come clean about their lies to the team, and everyone, especially Emma, is relieved to discover that they have been together all this time.
On top of this, Luke reveals that he is going to retire, again, and to show how serious he is about it, he proposes to Tally. As they get engaged and prepare to get wedded a second time, it seems that they might finally get their happy ending. However, given how much Luke is still valued at the CIA, there is a chance that he might be pulled into another mission. It remains to be seen how that will affect his relationship with Tally. For now, they are engaged to each other and preparing for another round of marriage, hoping that this time, it will work out because there are no secrets or lies between them anymore.
