MasterChef Season 16 Episode 6 Recap: Eggs Benedict

The heat continues to rise in the culinary battleground of season 16 of Fox’s ‘MasterChef: Global Gauntlet.’ This season raises the stakes further, given the diverse culinary traditions of the contestants from around the world. Guiding the competition are the renowned judges: Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry. In episode 6, appropriately titled ‘Eggs Benedict,’ the contestants face the season’s first Mystery Box Challenge. With another Immunity Pin on the line, the contestants must showcase their skills to create culturally-inspired Eggs Benedict.

Precision Takes Center Stage During the Season’s First Mystery Box Challenge

The episode officially commences as Aishu takes her place on the balcony, while the other contestants make their way to their respective stations. Wasting no time, Gordon announces that Aishu will get the first big advantage of the season. Tiffany chimes in that tonight is the season’s first Mystery Box Challenge and hints that it contains one of the most universal proteins in the world. As the competitors finally lift their boxes, they are delighted to find eggs beneath them. Joe then declares that tonight, the judges want to see the chefs’ individual cultures shine as they create their own version of an iconic Eggs Benedict. To ensure everyone understands the basics of the dish, Gordon will now show them how to make it with a little touch of his Scottish roots.

Gordon demonstrates that the chefs must first make the hollandaise sauce by separating the eggs and adding a teaspoon of the reduction, along with other components. In the meantime, they have to continue whisking the sauce and add clarified butter. However, the cooks must do it by removing the pan from the heat to prevent the sauce from scrambling. They must next poach the eggs for 90 seconds before placing them in ice water. Gordon then prepares a lovely Scottish lobster, then assembles all the components on the plate and adds the final touches. After he finishes the demonstration, Tiffany reveals that the contestants will have 1 hour to make Eggs Benedict inspired by their roots. The judges will be looking for two perfectly poached eggs and some version of a hollandaise sauce.

Gordon then asks Aishu to come down and reveals that she must select one territory that can use only a tiny whisk to make its sauce. After much deliberation, she announces that she has chosen Europe because its flavors are really diverse. Gordon quickly adds that tonight, the contestants are cooking for another Immunity Pin, which will not only protect the winner but also their entire territory. On the other hand, one of the three chefs who will prepare the worst dish will face elimination. As the clock begins ticking, the chefs rush to the pantry to gather their ingredients. Today’s challenge excites Heidi, since she often prepares this dish for her family, and winning it will be significant for Africa. While the competitors focus on their preparations, Aishu gets to watch them from the balcony because of her immunity.

The Pressure Exposes Flaws in the Chefs’ Hollandaise and Poaching Techniques

As 10 minutes pass, Basia notes that the small whisk takes much longer than expected. She admits it is making her worried because her hollandaise sauce doesn’t resemble the one Gordon prepared. She begins to wonder whether she can really do it when she feels so overwhelmed. With 5 more minutes already gone, Gordon arrives at Basia’s station and learns that she is staying true to her Polish roots. He then advises her to begin poaching her eggs. Meanwhile, Joe approaches Rita, who informs him that she has prepared the dish only once in her life. The judge quickly points out that her hollandaise looks quite dense and needs to be whisked more. He then instructs her to create a good vortex while poaching her eggs, and to ensure they’re not overcooked.

Gordon then moves on to Foo and promptly asks the chef to increase his pace. The judge is left shocked when he discovers that Foo has prepared eggs only once at home. In the meantime, Tiffany learns from Shompa that she is making her own bread and another take on a popular shrimp dish from Bangladesh. Upon checking her poached eggs, the judge notes they are undercooked and need to be put back into the water. When Joe arrives at Camilo’s station, the judge remarks that the chef’s dish is quite complicated and begins to wonder whether it can be finished on time. With just 30 minutes left on the clock, Gordon tells the other judges that Basia seems petrified, and he feels she should believe in herself. Joe then adds that Camilo isn’t focusing on the poached egg and hopes the chef’s attention to the other components pays off.

Joe then informs Gordon and Tiffany that Rita has prepared poached eggs before. It leads Joe to realize she lacks the necessary skills to cook the dish. Similarly, Gordon is worried about Foo, since the contestant also has no experience cooking eggs. The judges notice that Foo’s sauce has curdled, forcing him to restart the hollandaise. As the countdown to the final 15 minutes begins, Gordon approaches Maria and warns her about the richness of the fat in her dish. Furthermore, Tiffany arrives at Nico’s station and discovers that he is trying to prepare bombolone (Italian doughnut) Eggs Benedict using a croissant. She then tells him repeatedly that his sauce may need more butter. After returning to the panel, Tiffany remarks that Nico is all over the place, and his vision for the dish doesn’t make sense at all.

Incredible Flavors and Balance Help Heidi Win the Next Immunity Pin

During the discussion, Gordon reveals to Tiffany and Joe that Maria isn’t cooking any protein, which makes her dish quite risky. However, the judges also observe that using leeks in her dish can make it delicious. With just 2 minutes remaining on the clock, Camilo faces a predicament when his poached eggs end up breaking. While he scrambles to salvage the situation, Nico also faces the same situation. As the time comes to an end, Foo realizes that his eggs aren’t prepared the way he originally wanted. Rita then discloses that she has failed even to put the hollandaise in her dish. Without further ado, the judges visit each station to check the carefully prepared Eggs Benedict. During that time, they note that one of Camilo’s eggs has broken while Rita’s dish is incomplete.

Moreover, the judges observe that the eggs have fallen off Julia’s bread. Ultimately, Gordon announces that the top dish of the night from the Asia-Pacific territory is the one prepared by Shompa. She has made Eggs Benedict along with shrimp malai curry. Upon tasting it, Gordon and Tiffany highly praise her choice to make her own bread and the effort she put into the dish. Similarly, Joe is left impressed by the balanced, delicate flavor of her creation. The second top dish of the night is the Kaputsa Eggs Benedict, prepared by Basia from the European territory. Tiffany quickly points out that she loves the visuals of the preparation. All the judges highly compliment the dish, with Gordon noting that Basia shouldn’t second-guess herself anymore.

It is now the turn of the top preparation from the African territory, prepared by Heidi. As she presents her Eggs Benedict along with crawfish, it earns immense praise from the judges, with Joe remarking that it’s a restaurant-quality dish. The last main dish of the night is Eggs Benedict with creamy leeks, cooked by Maria from the American territory. After tasting it, the preparation receives multiple compliments for its depth of flavor and incredible balance. After a detailed discussion among the judges, Gordon announces that the person who has prepared the best dish of the night and the winner of the Immunity Pin is Heidi. It marks not only her but also the African territory safe from elimination. Gordon then instructs Heidi and the other chefs from her territory to take their place on the balcony.

A Weak Execution of His Dish Paves the Way For Camilo’s Elimination

Gordon eventually tells Rita to be thankful to Heidi since her dish would be in the bottom four if it weren’t for the winner. Finally, he announces that the worst dish from the Asia-Pacific region is the Shaking Beef Eggs Benedict. While Gordon notes that the dish is too complicated and has a bad concept, Tiffany feels the chef lost himself in the challenge. She elaborates that several components on Foo’s plate are unnecessary, but the main components aren’t executed properly. Joe remarks that the contestant doesn’t have mastery over the basic techniques, which is truly a problem. The judges then move on to the worst dish from the European territory: Nico’s bombolone Eggs Benedict.

Tiffany promptly points out that the hollandaise needs more butter. It leaves her baffled, since she already told him to double-check it during cooking, prompting Gordon to remark that Nico should get more serious. Joe then adds that a bombolone is an Italian doughnut, but Nico has used a croissant, which is unacceptable. Gordon feels the chef was trying to be too clever but lost the dish in the process. The third-worst dish is Camilo’s Eggs Benedict from the Americas. After seeing it, Gordon quickly remarks that it looks unappetizing. Tiffany then observes that the egg isn’t actually present in the dish and that there aren’t enough spices in the sauce.

Joe remarks that the preparation is a disservice to the cuisine’s ethnic identity that Camilo was trying to capture. After a long conversation, Gordon announces that Camilo is leaving the competition. Gordon asks Camilo to keep his head high and continue moving forward. In his exit interview, the chef admits that although he is disappointed, this opportunity felt amazing to him. He continues that his participation began as just a dare from his daughter, but it has become so much more. Camilo expresses his pride in representing his Mexican culture and says he will continue cooking to see where this adventure takes him.
