The culinary battleground buzzes with anticipation as season 16 of Fox’s ‘MasterChef: Global Gauntlet’ returns with episode 7, titled ‘Team Pitch to Plate.’ Presiding over the competition are the iconic judges: Joe Bastianich, Tiffany Derry, and Gordon Ramsay, who bring their sharp palates and sharper critiques to every dish. In today’s episode, the competition takes a dynamic turn with the season’s first team challenge. The contestants must prove that they can deliver teamwork and flavors by cooking for a team of 100 young soccer players, along with the coach of the USA national soccer team.
Heidi Gets a Key Advantage as She Faces the Season’s First Team Challenge
Once the contestants enter the welcoming arena, they are elated to see children playing soccer. They are further shocked to find Gordon playing with them for a brief moment. Eventually, the judges and the competitors take their positions on the field. Wasting no time, Gordon introduces everyone to Team USA’s soccer coach Mauricio Pochettino. Upon being asked, Mauricio advises the cooks that communication and standards are crucial to improving their team’s performance in the competition. Tiffany then announces that, for today’s challenge, the chefs will be split into two teams and must cook lunch for Mauricio and 100 amazing young soccer players from the US Soccer Ford Foundation. The coach then informs the contestant that, for a nutritious lunch, they should choose a protein.

Mauricio also mentions that the contestants should include as many flavors as possible and can prepare dishes like mac and cheese, a chicken sandwich, and burgers. Joe then announces that Heidi has an advantage from winning last week’s challenge. Today, she will pick the teams. Tiffany chimes in that Heidi is from Team Africa, which currently has 4 chefs. She can choose between Asia-Pacific and Europe and keep 9 contestants on each team. She can also select the Americas, giving her team just 8 chefs compared to the opposing team’s 10. Gordon reveals that the winning team tonight will be safe from elimination, while one contestant from the losing team will be eliminated. After a careful discussion, Heidi informs the judges that she has picked the Americas.
Heidi explains that she has chosen them because her team needs chefs who listen attentively to others. While the Red Team comprises 8 contestants from Africa and the Americas, the Blue Team comprises 10 chefs from Europe and Asia-Pacific. The judges soon disclose that the teams must select their team captains. The captain of the winning team will earn the incredible Immunity Pin. After much consideration, the Red Team nominates Dave as their captain, while the Blue Team picks Ted. Tiffany further announces that the three judges want to see a sample plate of one protein and two sides in about 30 minutes. Both teams then rush to their respective kitchens to decide on their menus and allocate tasks to each contestant. Once the 30 minutes on the clock begin ticking, the competitors turn their focus to preparing the dishes.
The Red and Blue Teams Struggle to Balance Coordination as Time Passes
Ted instructs his team not to overcomplicate the dishes. On the other hand, Dave begins to face several questions from his teammates about the preparation of mac and cheese. Peter quickly notes that since there are so many tasks at hand, it would’ve been best if the Red Team had 10 chefs. The attention then shifts to the judges’ panel, where Gordon and Joe observe that the Red Team may have made a mistake, as they have only 8 contestants, which isn’t enough manpower. Gordon begins to wonder whether Dave truly has the voice to lead his team as captain. The judge then adds that the Blue Team has multiple young talents, with Ted in the lead. Joe promptly points out that he may be an impressive captain since he is level-headed and mature.

With 10 minutes already gone, Gordon approaches Dave and learns about the Red Team’s preparation. The judge quickly remarks that he isn’t sure if the team should really make fried chicken. Dave then returns to the team and tells them to test deep-frying a chicken piece to see how it works out. Heidi admits that she isn’t confident in working with deep fryers, but since she has two children at home, she often cooks for them. In the meantime, Tiffany and Joe arrive at the Blue Team’s kitchen, where Ted discloses that they are making four side dishes. When Tiffany states that the team is cooking more than needed, the captain elaborates that they have a two-person advantage that will help them with the preparation. Joe further points out that more people don’t necessarily mean better dishes.
Joe reminds Ted that it will depend on him to manage the resources and give people specific tasks. The judges advise the captain to pivot when things stop working out. Upon returning to the panel, Tiffany remarks that the Blue Team has too many people and ideas, prompting Gordon to question Ted’s role in the decisions. He then states that Dave is acting as a calm and collected captain, but the judge is worried about the team serving undercooked chicken. As the 30 minutes for preparing the sample finally come to an end, the judges first approach the Red Team. Dave presents them with fried chicken, bacon, and a ranch sandwich with mac and cheese and apple slices. Upon tasting the dish, the judges emphasize that it has too much bacon. Joe observes that the meal lacks any acidity, and the lack of seasoning dulls the dish’s flavor.
Both Teams Struggle to Regain Control as the Judges Deliver Harsh Critiques
After Gordon carefully tastes the Red Team’s preparation, he remarks that it is quite bland and asks Dave to tell his team to elevate the dish. The captain promptly informs his team that they are discarding the bacon altogether and adding more flavor to the mac and cheese. Meanwhile, the judges move on to the Blue Team’s kitchen, where Ted is worried because he feels the side dishes have gotten out of hand. He admits that although he wanted to keep it simple, he now feels that he has lost all control. He finally presents the judges with a smashed burger with cheddar and special sauce, chips, and a lemon cookie. Gordon and Joe remind Ted that he should’ve kept the goal of making two side dishes in mind, but the team is aiming for more than needed.

Upon tasting the burger, Joe notes that it feels more like a meatloaf burger, as the meat is overcooked. However, he compliments the seasoning on the chips. Tiffany then points out that the cookie doesn’t have a clear lemon flavor. When Ted begins explaining that it is a last-minute shift, the judges reassure him that it is a good idea, but it needs to be done perfectly. After the judges’ departure, the captain informs his team that they should pivot to making orzo, but if that doesn’t work out, they should try making the veggie cup. He further mentions that they should discard making the cookies for the time being. Upon noticing the change, Gordon asks Ted for details, but the captain fails to provide any. Meanwhile, Nico approaches Gordon and asks him to check if the orzo is properly cooked, leaving the judge frustrated.
Shortly after, Gordon announces that both teams have to serve five soccer players at once. Eventually, the judges arrive at the Red Team’s kitchen, and Gordon wastes no time slicing their chicken to check whether it’s properly cooked. He is shocked to find that the chicken is still quite raw, considering its pink color. He quickly sends it back into the kitchen, noting that it needs to be cooked more. In the meantime, Ted announces in the kitchen that the team will serve orzo and a veggie cup. Upon learning that the Blue Team is making three side dishes, Gordon gathers the team around. He declares that although they are minutes from beginning their service, the team still has no vision for their meal. Ultimately, the judge emphasizes that the Blue Team should truly become organized.
Chaos Erupts With Red Team’s Raw Chicken and the Blue Team’s Fiery Grill
After speaking with Gordon, Ted once again pivots to choosing the chips and cookies in the last 5 minutes before the service begins. As the kids finally start coming for their food, the chefs officially start plating the dishes. Meanwhile, Gordon returns to the Red Kitchen to check if their chicken is properly cooked. He is shocked to find that it is again undercooked. It disappoints Heidi, since she is the one cooking the protein and feels responsible for the raw chicken. Despite sending the chicken back to the kitchen twice, it still comes out partially raw. Feeling frustrated, Gordon throws away a piece of fried chicken, leading the Red Team to fall behind on their preparation. On the contrary, Gordon observes that the Blue Team has finally found its momentum with an impressive system of its own.

Ted now feels good because he considers it a form of redemption for his team. As the children begin eating the dishes prepared by the chefs, Joe starts visiting each table to understand which team’s preparation is most preferred by the kids. While some are impressed by the Blue Team’s juicy burger, others note that the Red Team’s fried chicken is quite kid-friendly. As the spotlight shifts to the Red Team’s kitchen, it is revealed that they are finally catching up with their opponent. In the meantime, Gordon shifts his focus to Nico and asks him not to press the burgers on the grill, as the dripping oil is causing flare-ups. The situation soon gets out of hand when most of the grill catches fire, and it is extinguished with a fire extinguisher. Nico and Daniel promptly move on to one of the remaining grills, which is still working.
The Team Challenge Culminates in Red Team’s Victory and Ted’s Emotional Exit
Joe announces in the dining area that the children and the coach who are tasting the dishes must kick the balls into the red and blue goal posts to vote for their respective favorite team preparation. As the service comes to an end, Ted confesses that he feels he has failed his team. Similarly, Heidi becomes concerned because, although she has the Immunity Pin, her mistake can send someone on her team home. The judges eventually welcome all the chefs before the children. Gordon then announces that the Red Team is the winner of today’s challenge. Consequently, it helps Dave earn the Immunity Pin. The judge then turns to the Blue Team, noting that three of them played the biggest role in their team’s loss today.

Gordon announces that it’s none other than Ted, Nico, and Daniel. The judge elaborates that while Ted lost his voice as the team’s captain, Daniel and Nico have caused additional chaos in the kitchen while preparing the burgers. Ultimately, the judge declares that the person leaving the competition tonight is Ted. Gordon states that he had unfortunately lost control and failed to step up as a leader. In his exit interview, Ted admits he is devastated to be eliminated, but feels he has let his team down by not standing his ground as captain. The episode concludes with Ted bidding emotional goodbyes to his fellow competitors.
