Season 16 of Fox’s ‘MasterChef: Global Gauntlet’ challenges the incredibly talented home cooks across the country who must prove that they can impress some of the biggest names in the culinary world. These include Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry, who are not just the judges but also the ones guiding the chefs. Episode 8, titled ‘World Cup Cookoff,’ raises the stakes as the remaining cooks are tasked with creating the perfect dishes for a World Cup watch party. It also marks the introduction of a new twist in the form of a red card advantage, putting several strategies into play.
The Chefs Face a World Cup Watch-Party Challenge With a Twist of Red Card
Once the competitors step into the kitchen, they are awestruck by the new decorations, including Home Depot signs, grills, and turf, among other items one usually finds at a backyard party. Gordon quickly congratulates Africa and the Americas for winning the last Team Challenge. Without further ado, he announces that in the show, they are having their own global gauntlet, and nothing says World Cup kickoff like a good watch party. Tiffany then reveals that today’s challenge will have the chefs cook dishes perfect for a FIFA World Cup watch party. Joe adds that they must prepare something representing their culture and territory. The chefs will have one hour to prepare their food today. Since Dave was the previous winner, Gordon reveals that Dave will have the advantage of using a red card.

Gordon explains that after halftime, Dave will have the chance to bench one chef from this challenge. Tiffany chimes in that the particular chef will be safe from elimination tonight, but if he gets rid of a territory’s best cook, the chances of that group’s win go down. After learning the details, Dave expresses his wish to make the right strategic decision. With the return of the Immunity Pin, the winner tonight is again going to make themselves and their team safe from elimination, while only one contestant will be eliminated. Gordon then announces that as a special bonus, their partners at Home Depot are offering a $2,500 gift card to the winner of tonight’s challenge. As the clock begins ticking, the competitors rush to the pantry to grab their ingredients.
Jake reveals that although he is not a grill master and is not familiar with how it works, he will make sure to showcase his heritage. It turns out that since Britney is a professional wrestler, she loves to throw her own watch parties and treat her friends. While watching the contestants, Tiffany notes that the spices and flavors the chefs bring from their territories are crucial to the challenge. Joe observes that it is a good sign that the competitors are already marinating their protein. With 10 minutes already gone, Gordon arrives at Rita’s station to learn about her dish. She discloses that she has a huge backyard in New York and hence, wants the Home Depot gift card. The judge instructs her to get a good sear on her protein and elevate it.
Dave’s Red Card Choice Saves Rita and Leaves Africa With Just Two Chefs
Tiffany eventually approaches Jaime and learns that she is cooking a Malaysian dish that usually takes a few hours. When the judge expresses her concern, the chef reassures Tiffany that she often makes it in an hour for her cheat meals. It is revealed that her father also makes it for her when he leaves for work at Home Depot. Hence, Jaime feels pressure to do a good job today. However, she begins to panic because she has to prepare many components in a very short time. While Dave continues to consider his options and make the tough decision, Peter divulges that several Nigerian families are passionate about sports and often host events like watch parties. With just 40 minutes remaining on the clock, Gordon arrives at Heidi’s station.

Gordon learns that at Heidi’s home, more than 20 of her husband’s friends come over to watch football. So, it has made her used to getting everything ready as they watch the games. In the meantime, Joe approaches Julia and asks her not to overcook the scallops and to ensure nice caramelization on one of the components of her dish. When the judge points out that scallops are too elevated for watch parties, the chef reveals that when she was playing soccer, her family would often eat lobsters and scallops after the games and send her pictures. Julia says it’s hard to sear scallops, and she believes that high risk will truly yield high rewards. At Tkaiya’s station, Tiffany discovers that the contestant is preparing one of the dishes typically cooked in a Jamaican household.
When Tiffany tastes a part of Tkaiya’s dish, the judge promptly notes that the chef should pay attention to the pepper and see what’s missing to adjust the flavor. With 5 minutes remaining before the halftime mark, Gordon observes that Rita is in trouble since her filet mignon isn’t even cooking yet. As the clock reaches the 30-minute mark, Gordon instructs the chefs to stop cooking and asks Dave to come down from the balcony. After much deliberation, the chef decides to help his teammate, Rita, and gives her the Red Card, which marks her safe from elimination. However, the decision leaves the African Territory with just Heidi and Peter. Once the clock resumes, Peter is left disappointed with Dave’s choice because it can inherently place someone at the bottom. However, Peter decides to completely focus on cooking his dish.
Judges Select Jaime, Julia, and Heidi’s Dishes as the Top Dishes From Their Territory
As the final 25 minutes begin ticking, Dave tells Rita that he doesn’t think anyone from Africa is going home today. He admits that his decision puts Peter and Heidi in a tricky situation, but he believes both of them are strong cooks. Meanwhile, Joe approaches Nico and advises him to be careful of the very small chicken pieces. The judge further instructs the chef to strike the right balance between fat and chicken to achieve the perfect crisp and properly cooked protein. When Tiffany arrives at Maria’s station, the judge becomes concerned about the texture of Maria’s dish. When the competitor admits it isn’t what she wanted, Tiffany cautions her to ensure her dish looks exactly as she originally envisioned. With 7 minutes left, Joe informs Tiffany and Gordon that Nico is making chicken skewers.

Soon, Gordon notes that, given the small pieces of chicken Nico is using to cook, it may overcook. Because time is running out, Tiffany becomes worried as she notices that Jaime is still cooking her dish. The judge further tells the panel that Maria is cooking a steak, but the potatoes are being made in a blender, making them too thin. As the final few seconds pass by, the competitors finish plating their dishes. While Nico remarks that his chicken is perfectly cooked, Jaime becomes emotional, hoping her dish turns out to be perfect for her father. As the judges begin carefully observing and examining the dishes of all the home cooks, Maria informs them that her potatoes didn’t turn out as she’d hoped. Joe is also surprised to find only two skewers on Nico’s plate, even though there are three judges.
After a thorough discussion, Gordon announces that the top dish from the Asia-Pacific region is Jaime’s roti canai. After tasting the dish, the judges are impressed by the well-prepared curry and the excellent blend of the dish’s ingredients. They also praise the fact that she completed it within an hour, even though it usually takes several hours to prepare. From the European territory, Julia’s pan-seared scallops become the top dish. Tiffany quickly points out how well the dish looks, and the judges soon shower her with compliments on its flawless preparation. From Africa, Heidi’s New York strip steak is picked as one of the top dishes. Although Gordon loves the puree, he observes that the scallops on the side are overcooked by 30 seconds. However, both Joe and Tiffany highly praise the flavors and deliciousness of the preparation.
Jaime Emerges as the Night’s Top Dish Winner While Nico Bids Farewell
After tasting the first three top dishes of the night, Gordon announces that the fourth top dish from the Americas is cooked by Tkaiya. She has prepared an Escovitch fish, which impresses the judges. However, Gordon points out that he would’ve preferred a little more moisture in the fish. On the other hand, Joe remarks that he loves the spice and the flavor contrast in the preparation. The judges eventually step away for an intense deliberation, following which Gordon announces that the best dish of the night is cooked by Jaime. It means that she is the winner of the Immunity Pin and the $2,500 Home Depot gift card. Shortly after, Gordon instructs Jaime, the other three top dish cooks, and the other chefs from the Asia-Pacific category to take their place on the balcony since they are safe from elimination.

Gordon finally turns his focus to the bottom dishes of the night, starting with Europe. He reveals that the worst dish from the territory is Nico’s chicken skewers. Tiffany observes that his dish looks like food served at a watch party with a limited budget. While Joe points out that the minimal amount of chicken in the dish is inadequate, Gordon remarks that the chicken has dried out because of its small size, though it is still delicious. Both Tiffany and Joe note that although the idea is good, the execution and technique are not up to par. For the African territory, Peter’s piri-piri-spiced ribeye becomes the bottom dish by default, since he is the only chef left on his team. The preparation earns immense praise from the judges, with Joe noting that it will never be one of the bottom three dishes. From the Americas, the judges taste Maria’s flank steak dish.
Immediately, Gordon remarks that it looks unfinished, and the steak is overcooked. Although Tiffany loves the salad, she doesn’t feel that Maria leaned into the challenge today. After a detailed discussion, Gordon asks Peter to head to the balcony, since the judges have unanimously agreed that he hasn’t cooked the worst dish. Eventually, Gordon announces that Nico is the chef being eliminated tonight. The judge points out that the chef’s biggest issue is his lack of experience and that he should therefore continue learning. Nico expresses that it was a humbling experience. In his exit interview, he states he is disappointed because he thought he would win. He feels that competition has been difficult, but he will not stop pursuing his culinary dream. Nico finally bids everyone goodbye, believing he is a changed individual.
