Netflix’s ‘Miss Governor’ follows the story of Antoinette Dunkerson, whose dreams of having a flourishing political career find the right track when she becomes the first Black lieutenant governor of Mississippi. However, this position of power comes with strings attached, most of which are designed to hold her back. Apart from the bureaucratic sabotage that she receives from Governor Harper’s office, there is another thing that threatens to undo all of her hard work. A website called GovLeakster becomes a potent tool used by someone to create more hurdles in her path. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Fictional GovLeakster Highlights Antoinette’s Blindspot
GovLeakster is a fictional website that is used as a plot device to make things more challenging and dramatic for Antoinette. While she has a lot of enemies who want her out of office, she doesn’t realise that sometimes, trouble is also spurred by the people close to her. In this case, it is her daughter, Lola, who creates a storm she doesn’t realise could upturn her mother’s entire career. Lola is presented as a strong-minded teenager whose relationship with her mother is a little fraught, at least from her point of view. While Antoinette loves her daughter more than anything, her political career doesn’t allow her to spend as much time with her children, and Lola resents her for that, especially since she becomes lieutenant governor.
In the second half of the season, Governor Harper is hospitalised, which gives Antoinette a chance to truly shine as the lieutenant governor. Her increasing power and influence extend to her children, who suddenly become popular in school. Lola realises that her mother’s position gives her a certain edge, and she decides to use it to her advantage. At first, she uses her mother’s name to get her peers to do her bidding, but then, she finds out about Governor Harper in the hospital. She knows that this is a secret, but she doesn’t realise why it is important to keep it that way. Believing that the knowledge of her mother’s secrets would give her more power, Lola decides to create GovLeakster, in which she breaks the news about Harper’s condition and how it has been kept a secret from the public for so long.
When the news breaks, Antoinette’s enemies, especially Jed, think that she is behind it, and they start to prepare for her downfall, fearing that she might be planning a coup herself. This leads Antoinette to prepare for war, but her daughter doesn’t understand what pickle she has thrown her mother into. What makes it worse is that Antoinette is not ready to accept that her daughter is behind the leak. Fortunately, her staff and friends are not blinded by their love for Lola, and they make sure that she doesn’t get her hands on any other secrets that might harm Antoinette further. Later, Lola’s brother, Titus, also warns her about divulging their mother’s secrets, and it seems that she has listened to him. At least for the time being.
