Miss Governor: Is The Sunrise Show a Real Talk Show? Is Rhonda Based on a Real Interviewer?

Netflix’s ‘Miss Governor’ follows Antoinette Dunkerson’s political career, as she reaches quite a milestone after making history by becoming the first Black lieutenant governor of Mississippi. She wants to put her power to good use, but she is held back by her own office, especially by Governor Harper, who wants to keep her out of the way by busying her with mundane tasks. Eventually, when Harper falls ill, Antoinette gets some semblance of true responsibility, and she makes the most of it. This brings her media attention, and she finally lands an interview with The Sunrise Show, but it turns out to be nothing like she expected. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Sunrise Show and Interviewer Rhonda are Fictional But Important to Antoinette’s Story

The events and characters in ‘Miss Governor’ are entirely fictional plot points that come at a defining point in Antoinette’s career. At this point, Governor Harper has been hospitalised and is out of the picture, as his chief of staff, Jed, runs things in his name. While Antoinette has kept Harper’s declining health a secret, she has done it in return for getting meaningful work that will help put her on the map. She receives the task of issuing pardons, which brings her the media attention she had been vying for. This is when she is offered an interview with Gayle King for The Sunrise Show. While King remains one of the most notable people in the country, the show is a fictional element added to the story. In the same vein, Rhonda, too, is a made-up character whose approach towards Antoinette sets the tone of the interview.

The opportunity of being interviewed by Gayle is not only a personal high, but it could also push the momentum for her to become a national figure and maybe indulge in bigger political aspirations. However, on the day of the interview, it is revealed that Gayle won’t be able to make it, and in her place, a woman named Rhonda will conduct the interview. Antoinette and her team are disappointed and angered by this turn of events, but the show must go on, so they decide to let things roll on and make the best of it.

The interview would probably have gone better if Antoinette had known that her microphone was installed on her jacket, which would have prevented her from spouting things that would later cause a lot of trouble for her. Her harsh words for the interviewer don’t sit well either, and Rhoda goes on the offensive, becoming interested in anything that can embarrass Antoinette. Thus, the interview becomes a major pivot point that threatens to derail everything that Antoinette has worked for. At the same time, the mere fact that she is now being interviewed by a major talk show reveals that she is, in a way, on the right track, if only she and the people around her don’t sabotage her.
