‘Musafir Cafe’ revolves around the life of Chander Sharma, who runs Musafir Cafe in the mountains of Mussoorie with his romantic partner, Preeti Kaushik. However, he has a deeply complex past with Sudha Tripathi, whom he met in Bhopal eight years ago. The story is narrated through two timelines, which chronicle different stages in Chander’s life as he tries to find true love and a sense of belonging. Musafir Cafe Season 1 Plot Synopsis
Chander Sharma’s life story is narrated through two timelines that surprisingly converge toward the end. In the present, Chander co-owns Musafir Cafe with his romantic partner, Preeti. The two of them have been in each other’s lives for five years and run the cafe passionately, bringing tourists and locals together under one roof in the mountains of Mussoorie, India. Though Chander deeply loves Preeti, his past memories with Sudha continue to haunt him. A writer named Rahil, who is friends with both the owners, often visits the cafe. Rahil has complex feelings towards Preeti, despite knowing that she’s with Chander. The cafe owners’ vision and the way they run the establishment make it a popular destination, attracting influencers and travel vloggers.
Preeti is also an aspiring writer who writes blog posts and wishes to expand the cafe into an artists’ residency. Preeti has insecurities about her relationship with Chander, as she knows about his past with Sudha. The owners are close to Mark, a middle-aged man who is the cafe’s first investor. He is grieving the death of his partner, Nilima, and sees no point in staying back in Mussoorie. Mark runs a homestay, which still triggers memories of Nilima. He then gives the property to Preeti and Chander so they can use the space to build the artists’ residency. Preeti and Chander insist that they don’t want to marry each other, considering it a limiting factor. Preeti believes that Chander would change her mind about her if he came across Sudha again, despite his assurance.
Before leaving Mussoorie, Mark hands over Nilima’s old ring to Chander, telling him to propose marriage to Preeti. The past timeline takes place 8 years back in the city of Bhopal. Chander works for a logistics company and is pressured by his mother to get married. He meets Sudha, a young lawyer, whose matrimonial profile his mother suggests. Though their first meeting is awkward, Chander and Sudha are charmed by each other. While the logistics employee’s dream is to establish his own cafe in the mountains and spend his life with his future wife and kids, the lawyer has different aspirations. Sudha deals with the aftermath of her father’s passing and feels responsible for the well-being of her mother, who still lives in a different town with a joint family.
Although their goals differ, Sudha and Chander find it difficult not to spend time together. The lawyer moves into Chander’s house after fighting with her roommate. What begins as a temporary arrangement soon leads to intimacy and love. Sudha hopes to open her own law firm in Mumbai, but ends up placing a job offer on hold to stay with her lover instead. The logistics employee supports his girlfriend’s dreams of building a life in Mumbai, but struggles to pursue his own ambition to become a cafe owner. Eventually, Sudha accepts a job offer in Mumbai, but she hesitates to tell her boyfriend. She encourages him to follow his dreams and not make sacrifices just to be with her. The couple takes a trip to Mussoorie, where Chander wants to research locations for a potential cafe. This is when the two meet Mark and Nilima, who run their own homestay.
After the trip, Chander and Sudha return to Bhopal, where things take a shocking turn. Sudha reveals that she accepted the job offer, leaving Chander melancholic. He begs her to stay, since he is overwhelmingly in love with her. Though he fully supports her dreams, the lawyer thinks that love will just be a hurdle in her path to success and a better life for her mother. The two part ways on a devastating note, when a pregnancy test turns out to be a false alarm. The past and present collide unexpectedly when Sudha, now the owner of a law firm, visits Mussoorie and meets Preeti, who is facing her own doubts about Chander. The lives of Preeti, Chander, and Sudha finally converge, leaving their fates uncertain.
Musafir Cafe Season 1 Ending: Does Chander Forgive Sudha? What Does Preeti See in the Ring Box?
When Chander returns to Mussoorie from a short work trip, he is shocked to see Sudha at the homestay, which has now been transformed into an artists’ residency. Overwhelmed, he talks to Preeti about the situation, and she tells him to meet Sudha and find closure. The former lovers finally talk after 8 long years, and difficult conversations follow. Flashback sequences reveal that Chander tried to persuade Sudha to stay with him, but she rejected him, walking away in frustration after he, in desperation, suggested marriage. Following this, Chander also called Sudha’s mother to convince her daughter to choose him instead. Before he said much, Sudha snatched the phone away. Chander insisted that Sudha accepted the Mumbai job offer because she felt guilty about not being financially capable enough to take care of her mother.
This phone call made the young lawyer extremely angry and sad, ultimately severing all communication between her and Chander. In the present, these harrowing incidents from the past continue to haunt Chander and Sudha. She reveals that she is moving to Singapore soon and is also in a relationship with a man named Vineet. Though the two of them are happy for each other’s professional success, unresolved feelings still linger in their conversations. They take a walk in the woods, where Sudha asks him why he hasn’t yet married Preeti. Chander says that he was mentally married to Sudha in the past and wasn’t able to consider marriage. The lawyer wonders why she isn’t truly happy in her life, despite everything going according to her plan.
She also says she had visited the cafe before, but chose not to approach him when she saw him kissing Preeti. Chander reveals that he, too, tried to visit Sudha in the past but chose not to come face-to-face with her when he saw her happy outside the court premises. Sudha discloses that her mother passed away, leaving her in an emotionally complex zone. The cafe owner regrets not fully understanding her feelings, and she says there is no need to change anything in her life. When Chander drops her back at the homestay, he asks why she actually visited him. Sudha divulges that she still feels like something is missing in her life. Chander finds it difficult to accept that she walked away from him in the past and will likely do so again. He cannot bring himself to forgive her for the past, while still dealing with his feelings for her.
He comes close to her and says that he will make the decisions this time, leaving their futures hanging in the balance. Preeti deals with her own insecurities after meeting Sudha and tries to come to terms with the evolving situation. Though she knows Chander loves her, Preeti struggles emotionally. Things take a turn when she finds the ring that Mark gave to Chander. Preeti assumed that Chander might propose to her soon, not knowing that he didn’t choose to own the ring. While she smiles and gets emotional looking at the ring, Chander’s puzzling feelings make it almost impossible to know if she will ever find true love.
Will Chander Choose Preeti or Sudha?
Chander is in an emotionally vulnerable state after Sudha meets him. On one hand, he knows that Preeti loves him dearly, but on the other hand, he also understands that the lawyer still has feelings for him. The season ends without revealing who he chooses, leaving the story on a cliffhanger. Chander is torn between the past and the present, both of which hold deeper meaning for him. While his memories with Sudha represent the charm and magic of love, his time with Preeti is what makes him happy in the present. The cafe owner now finds himself in a precarious situation, where a seemingly impossible choice has to be made, despite how much it may hurt him and those around him. Choosing Preeti would mean still living his cafe dreams and finding happiness.
However, if Chander chooses Sudha, he may have to sacrifice everything that he has built and move away from the mountains. This is not an easy decision to make, and would presumably push him to his limits. Preeti has stayed with him for 5 long years, getting to know him well. But Sudha re-enters his life unexpectedly, causing him to question his feelings. Given that Preeti has accepted Chander despite knowing his complicated romantic past, she may feel even greater betrayal if he abandons her. Chander’s choice will inevitably hurt one of the two women, which might change his life irrevocably.
Who Visits the Artists’ Residency? What Happens to Vineet and Sudha?
At the very end of the season, Preeti checks in a new guest at the artists’ residency. Vineet, Sudha’s boyfriend, unexpectedly visits Mussoorie, further complicating the already puzzling romantic situation. Although the viewers don’t see his face, his words suggest he is excited to surprise his girlfriend. It is likely that Vineet will play a greater role as the story moves forward. With Sudha confronting her lingering feelings for Chander, seeing Vineet will likely leave her feeling even more confused.
The new guest will likely learn more about the equation among Chander, Sudha, and Preeti, which might make it difficult for him to process everything. Whether Vineet and Sudha have a future together depends on several key factors, including how she handles Chander. Although Vineet and Sudha are scheduled to move to Singapore and start a new life, the weight of the past may be too heavy a burden to ignore.
