The battle for culinary greatness continues to approach the final chapter on season 5 of Fox’s ‘Next Level Chef.’ Despite the rising pressure, the contestants remain fearless with guidance from the judges/mentors, Nyesha Arrington, Gordon Ramsay, and Richard Blais. After Andy’s elimination, episode 15, titled ‘Building a Legacy,’ brings the Top four chefs into the Semifinals. Today, they face the challenge of cooking a dish that represents their legacy. Tonight is not just about skills but also about one’s identity before three competitors move on to the Finale.
Emotions Run High Before the Semifinalists Face a Surprise Challenge
The Semifinals officially kick off with Gordon welcoming the four top contestants: Cole, Gabrielle, Darian, and Connor. He then asks Cole where the emotions that she cooks with come from. She explains that it comes from her looking deeply into herself and being her own support system. When Nyesha inquires about Connor’s current feelings, he reveals that he often thinks about dropping out of school. He often wonders what path can give him hope besides making food to boost his self-confidence. Gordon then moves on to Gabrielle, complimenting her energy and confidence while cooking. She promptly adds that she just focuses on sharing her love language of cooking with the people she adores.

When Richard asks who fuels Darian’s passion for the competition, the contestant reveals he wants to make his mother proud. Darian’s wife is also one of his biggest supporters and motivates him to keep cooking. Without sparing any more time, Gordon announces that today the chefs face the final big challenge to pave their way to the Grand Finale. Today’s challenge is all about the competitors and their legacy. Nyesha explains that the contestants will have 30 minutes to prepare a dish that defines them as chefs and reflects who they are as people. Gordon then adds that for the first time, the protein they pick will be hidden under five domes, making it a surprise. The semifinalists must choose a dome without knowing what’s inside, then prepare their dish with whatever they receive.
At the end of today’s challenge, the two best dishes will secure their place in the Grand Finale. The remaining two chefs will then battle it out in the elimination cook-off for the final spot. Since Darian cooked the top dish in the previous challenge, he will be cooking in the Top Kitchen today with Gordon. The judge then asks what the chef wants to do with his Time Token. After much consideration, Darian decides to keep the extra 10 seconds for himself because if he gets a protein he doesn’t want, he can spend time thinking about what to create. While Gabrielle and Connor will cook in the Middle Kitchen under Richard’s supervision, Cole will prepare her dish in the Basement with Nyesha. Once the competitors and the judges arrive at their respective kitchens, the platform starts descending.
Unexpected Proteins and Technical Difficulties Push the Chefs to Their Limits
As the platform arrives in the Top Kitchen, Darian is lucky to unveil a filet as his protein, just as he desired, alongside incredible ingredients. In the Middle Kitchen, Connor gets the pork chop, which concerns him because he doesn’t think about his legacy while cooking it. On the other hand, Gabrielle grabs the lobster tail, but she accidentally drops a big portion of it down to the Basement. The chef continues to look for citrus for her dish, but unfortunately, fails to find any on the platform. In the Basement Kitchen, Cole gets a turbot for her preparation. Although she has never cooked it before, she is glad to get seafood. Once the 30 minutes on the clock begin ticking, the attention shifts to Gabrielle, who is panicking because she has lost half of her protein and has no herbs and citrus for the preparation.

When Richard asks Gabrielle about the vision for her dish, she struggles to provide an answer. The mentor quickly steps in to guide her on creating a simple Mediterranean preparation. Gabrielle then reveals that her father, Frank, passed away in 2020, and she plans to carry on his legacy through his Italian heritage. She knows her father would be proud of her, and she is doing this for him. As 5 minutes pass, Richard learns from Connor that pork chop is one of his grandfather’s favorite dishes. The contestant discloses that his grandfather was the type of person who used to do musicals in the 1970s and was involved in producing and singing. In the Basement, Cole asks Nyesha how well the fish pairs with spice, and the mentor quickly suggests that, although it goes well with spice, the chef should consider what she really wants.
Meanwhile, Connor becomes worried when he realizes that his pork chop isn’t browning like he wants it to. He tries to salvage the situation by covering it with a big dish, but it takes him a long time to get the color right. Richard then asks Gabrielle not to overcook the fish. With just 20 minutes remaining on the clock, Gordon asks Darian about his legacy. The contestant reveals he didn’t want to be stuck cooking just Jamaican food and wants to prepare any cuisine that comes his way. He wants to show others like him that they can achieve their goals and dreams too. Just when Darian mentions that he misses his wife, Jessica, and his children, Darian Jr. and Nina, the platform arrives in the Top Kitchen. The chef becomes emotional when the TV on the platform reveals a heartfelt message from his partner, son, and daughter.
Emotional Family Messages Fuel the Contestants Through the Final Stretch
In the Middle Kitchen, Gabrielle receives an emotional message from her mother, Gail, her husband, Scott, and her sons, Rye and Elijah. On the other hand, Connor becomes elated to virtually see his parents, Laurie and Andy. Lastly, Cole becomes overwhelmed with emotions upon receiving a message from her aunt, Elycia, who raised her. Once the platform is gone, Nyesha asks Cole about the inspiration behind today’s dish. It turns out the chef is channeling the energy from her grandmother’s last letter. The focus then shifts to Connor, who is still struggling to cook his pork chop properly. He admits his pan wasn’t hot enough for the pork and realizes it’s overcooked. In the final 10 minutes, Connor confesses that this is the first time he has been worried about a protein in the competition.

Richard reassures Connor by telling him to stay calm and asks the chef to make sure everything gets done. In the meantime, Gabrielle uses vinegar as an alternative to citrus because she really wanted it for her dish. The spotlight then falls on Darian, who divulges that he is quite close to his mother. She has acted as both parents in his life due to his father’s absence and is now at his home, helping his wife look after the children. However, the contestant is currently worried about his potatoes since they are a little thick. In the final 5 minutes, Connor begins feeling scattered and discovers that his puree is too bland. When he informs Richard that he is putting sugar in the puree, the mentor reminds him not to “get crazy.” As the time finally comes to an end, the competitors finish plating their dishes and putting them on the platform.
The Tasting Round begins with Cole’s pan-seared turbot, which receives compliments from both Gordon and Richard. However, Richard points out that he would’ve loved to see the fish turn a deeper golden brown. Next up is Gabrielle’s butter-poached lobster. Although both Nyesha and Gordon love the dish, the latter remarks that it just needs citrus to balance the richness of the preparation. Richard informs the other two mentors that Gabrielle actually tried to find a lemon but sadly didn’t get one. The mentors then move on to Connor’s miso-glazed pork chop. Upon tasting it, Gordon quickly notes that the protein is very tough. Similarly, Nyesha also mentions that it’s overcooked and the dish leans more to a sweeter side. Lastly, the judges taste the peppercorn filet, which receives immense praise from all the judges for its flavors.
Semifinals Conclude With Darian, Cole, and Connor Heading to the Finale
After the tasting, the mentors excuse themselves for a much-needed discussion. Eventually, Richard announces that the two chefs, who have earned their spots in the Finale, are Darian and Cole. It sends Connor and Gabrielle into the Elimination Round. Gordon then declares that both these chefs will receive 25 minutes to create a next-level dish worthy of a spot in the Finale. The platform begins to descend once the contestants and Gordon arrive in the Top Kitchen. During the ingredient grab, Connor is disappointed to find a veal chop, since it is the last protein he would’ve picked. After the grab concludes and the 25 minutes begin ticking, Gabrielle declares that she hasn’t picked the protein. Fortunately, Connor and Cole point out that her veal is on one of the stations. Soon, Gordon arrives at Gabrielle’s station and asks her to relax.

When Gordon learns that the chef is debating between making a potato or pea puree, he suggests she choose the option that can be cooked quickly. He then moves on to Connor and tells him to make sure his pan is hot before searing. With 5 minutes already gone, Gabrielle admits she is juggling a lot and risks her dish by not doing a traditional take. In the meantime, Gordon asks Connor to focus on his dish. Right after, Gabrielle pivots to making a different puree for her preparation. With just 7 minutes remaining, Connor faces a predicament when he mistakenly drops 90% of his garnish on the floor. Fortunately, he has a spoonful of garnish remaining and decides to use it in his dish. As the final few seconds pass, both chefs finish plating their dishes. The tasting ultimately begins once Nyesha and Richard enter the kitchen.
The judges first taste Gabrielle’s veal chop dish, which earns compliments from Richard and Nyesha. However, Nyesha points out that the tahini is slightly overpowering for her. Next up is Connor’s veal chop preparation, which also receives praise for the execution. While Nyesha notes that she would’ve loved more mushrooms in the dish, Richard remarks that he wanted something slightly sweet to break the salinity and earthiness of the mushrooms. After much deliberation, Nyesha and Richard select Connor’s dish to move into the Finale, eliminating Gabrielle. Gordon states that Gabrielle had been a star pupil, prompting the chef to say that this has been an unreal experience and that she will always be grateful to them. In her exit interview, she expresses gratitude for Gordon’s fatherly presence in the kitchen. After Gabrielle’s emotional exit, Gordon tells the Finalists to get some rest because they are just a step away from claiming the life-changing prize.
