However, all of that goes to ruin when something they could not have predicted takes over the narrative. At once, everything that Dan and Lisa believe in when it comes to love, trust, and companionship is put to the ultimate test. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Over Your Dead Body Plot Synopsis

‘Over Your Dead Body’ begins with director Dan Burton hitting a career low, as he finds himself directing advertisements without any creative control whatsoever. Work troubles are merely one half of the equation, however, as he is also unhappy in his marriage with Lisa, an aspiring actor. However, Dan has a malicious plan in mind to resolve all conflicts once and for all, and it involves a romantic getaway with Lisa to his father’s cabin. After catching up with his father, Michael, at his nursing home, Dan readies his supplies and gets together with Lisa, who seems excited for this trip, oblivious to what has been cooking up in the background. At the cabin, Dan goes as far as to prepare Lisa’s favorite dish, all the while planning to dismember her corpse and dump it in the nearby lake.

Before Dan can even get the chloroform ready, however, he is taken by surprise by none other than Lisa, who tasers him out cold. When Dan wakes up, bound to a chair, he learns that Lisa, too, came to the trip with similar goals in mind. Her plan was to shoot him dead and frame it as a hunting accident. However, before she can get started with this, Dan’s ex-con acquaintance, Henry, enters the scene and knocks her out instead. As it turns out, the two men plan to finish the hit together, but Lisa manages to turn Henry against Dan by bringing up how he has a lot more money than what he’s offering for the hit. As the three begin to fight for control over the gun, it accidentally goes off, killing Henry in the process.

As if things cannot get any worse, Dan and Lisa then turn on each other, shooting and missing until they hit the attic, causing it to cave in and reveal three fugitives who had been hiding there all along. The story then dials back three weeks, revealing convicts Pete and Todd, who escaped prison with the help of Pete’s lover and a prison guard, Allegra. Though they initially intended to wait for Dan and Lisa’s stay out, that is now out of the question. Cornered by a greater threat, the couple has no choice but to work together, and even manage to escape on one occasion, only to be caught again. Though Pete is a mega fan of the only feature film Dan ever directed, that is not enough, and as punishment for their escape, Pete tries to saw off Dan’s face, only for Michael to step in, having suspected trouble. As Dan and Lisa try to escape, Pete, Todd, and Allegra duke it out with Michael, ending with Todd dead and the other two more furious than ever.

Over Your Dead Body Ending: Do Dan and Lisa Get Back Together? Are Pete and Allegra Dead?

‘Over Your Dead Body’ ends on a happy note for Dan and Lisa, who go from being a dysfunctional pair to a national dream couple over the span of a single day. After they survive the attack, the police arrive at the scene and launch an official rescue, with the story quickly catapulting into national headlines. Before long, the two are dubbed the “cabin couple,” and all of this rebranding has a direct, positive impact on their love life. Ironically, however, the couple is no longer pulled towards each other by a desire to be famous. On the contrary, they rekindle their romance in the simplest of moments, as they sit back on the boat, having defeated Pete and company, with nothing to do except reflect on their mistakes and work out their next step.

Though the arrival of Michael briefly raises the couple’s chances of survival, that hope is quickly dispelled when Pete pushes Michael onto the lawnmower, creating a mess of blood and gore. However, it’s this exact moment that causes Dan to snap, essentially telling him that he must let go of all inhibitions if he wants to save the only person left that he loves, Lisa. As fate would have it, she also has the same idea, realizing in real-time that her love for Dan has not gone away just yet. While the couple has had their share of ups and downs over the years, all of it pales in comparison to how much they simply care for each other, especially when there’s a third, more malicious party involved in the mix.

As a foil to Dan and Lisa’s regenerating romance, Pete and Allegra have a complete fallout in the third act of the film, which also happens to be the cause of their defeat. As Dan tells Lisa to rush to the boat and escape, he instead walks back to the cabin, with a shotgun in his arm. There, he finds Allegra all alone, as Pete has already left her and wishes to hoard all of Dan’s wealth for himself. It is this division that allows Dan to gain the upper hand and shoot Allegra to death. Next, he catches Pete just in time before he captures Lisa and races away with the boat. In the ensuing struggle, Dan and Lisa manage to choke Pete out and throw him down the lake, ironically killing their mutual enemies instead of each other. It is precisely this bizarre turn of events, however, that makes them realize how relatively trivial their complaints have been.

Does Lisa Become a Movie Star? What Happens to Dan’s Career?

In the aftermath of the cabin incident, the entertainment industry wastes little time before cashing in on the hype by returning Dan to his former glory. This also means that Lisa can finally become the Hollywood movie star of her dreams, and that, too, covering a chunk of her own life. As both of them become overnight celebrities, Dan gets to direct his second film ever, adapting his and Lisa’s survival story, and starring Lisa herself. With all the creative freedom he can get, Dan transforms the story into a complete wishful fantasy, full of unrealistic martial-arts set pieces, exaggerated antagonists, and a shirtless Kumail Nanjiani playing the on-screen version of Dan. It is likely that these changes are intended to represent how Dan feels internally about the whole ordeal, as it is no less dramatic than a film.

The conclusion of ”Over Your Dead Body’ also connects back to the first scene of the film, which is about Dan having no creative control even over the advertisements that he’s tasked with directing. Now, however, there’s no one around to boss Dan anymore; he’s essentially free to direct the movie. More importantly, this means that Lisa is also free to flex her acting skills as she pleases, after years of having been curbed by everyone around her. As the duo brings their own story to life through ‘Dearly Be-Blooded,’ they are essentially looking back at a past when they were severely held back, both by life and by love. This time, however, fate is on their side, and neither Dan nor Lisa has any plans to let go of what they have accomplished.

Will Dan and Lisa Get Arrested For Killing Henry?

While Dan and Lisa turn into national heroes following the cabin crisis, Henry’s fate is conveniently shoved under the rug. The last we see of him is right after the prison trio is introduced, as they appear to have put Henry in a body bag while Dan and Lisa were out cold. This, however, ends up playing in the couple’s favor, as the murder is also pinned on Pete, Allegra, and Todd. Notably, in the press footage about Dan and Lisa’s story, we see a brief glimpse of a newspaper stating that “Local Psycho Killed,” with Henry’s photo in the background. This suggests that the police ultimately discover Henry’s body in the cabin, but chalk it up to him either dying at the hands of the criminals or getting caught in the crossfire.

Regardless of whether Dan and Lisa’s crimes are discovered, it is clear that the public is already drunk on tales of their heroism. Henry is shrugged off as a local miscreant who has been brought to justice at last. Moreover, Dan and Lisa seem to have no intention of ever revealing the truth, either, as they are fully comfortable with their new lives. The more important question, then, is whether the police will ever figure out that Dan and Lisa were actually trying to kill each other throughout the cabin trip. While the chlorofoam and ropes, among other items, can be hard to explain, it’s entirely possible that Dan and Lisa manage to hide the evidence before the police come in. Ironically, this makes them partners in crime, which is a fitting end to this twisted love story.
