Prime Video’s Butterfly to be Filmed in Seoul and Busan

The filming of Prime Video’s spy thriller series ‘Butterfly’ will begin in Seoul and Busan, South Korea, on an undisclosed date. The six-episode show revolves around David Jung, an enigmatic and highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative residing in South Korea. Jung’s life takes a tumultuous turn when the repercussions of an impossible decision from his past resurface, triggering a pursuit by Rebecca, a lethal and sociopathic agent tasked with his elimination. The narrative weaves a web of suspense as Jung grapples with the haunting consequences of his choices, delving into intricate family dynamics within the perilous realm of global espionage.

Reina Hardesty, known for her performance in ‘The Secret Art of Human Flight,’ is set to headline the cast along with Daniel Dae Kim. In the series, the actress takes on the role of Rebecca, a charismatic and unpredictable assassin. Orphaned, or so she believed, at the age of 13, Rebecca developed coping mechanisms to deal with her pain and loneliness. She learned to distance herself from challenging emotions, applying a mental tourniquet to the part of her that held love and empathy. Over time, she cultivated a tough exterior, a valuable asset in her line of work. Despite being a skilled hitwoman, Rebecca is not the typical stoic assassin; she exudes charm and vivacity, coming to life with every surge of adrenaline.

Kim will play David Jung, a mysterious and highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative residing in South Korea, who finds himself pursued by Rebecca. The actor-producer’s notable previous works include ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘The Good Doctor.’

The series was created by Ken Woodruff (‘The Enemy Within,’ ‘Gotham,’ and ‘The Mentalist’) and novelist Steph Cha, who also serve as the showrunners and two of the executive producers. Kitao Sakurai (‘Twisted Metal’) is on board to direct the pilot and an additional episode.

The executive producers also include Kim and John Cheng for 3AD, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios, and Arash Amel for The Amel Company, along with Sakurai. The show is based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series of the same name, created by Amel, written by Amel and Marguerite Bennett, and illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone. Seoul previously hosted the filming of productions such as ‘Past Lives’ and ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty,’ while Busan is a significant location of Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision to Leave.’
