Rapper K’naan Warsame is all set to direct an upcoming drama film titled ‘Mother, Mother.’ The movie follows a Somali camel herder whose only son is murdered by a boy his age. However, instead of taking revenge by killing the murderer, the herder exacts an unprecedented form of justice that shocks the whole nation. The production details of the film, including the filming dates and locations, have been kept under wraps for now.
The script of the film is also penned by K’naan, whose real name is Keinan Abdi Warsame. The rapper earlier wrote and directed the pilot episode of the TV show ‘Mogadishu, Minnesota’ for HBO. However, the drama, revolving around a Somali family living in Minneapolis, was not picked up by the network and the project did not move forward.
K’naan later wrote an episode of Hulu’s psychological horror series ‘Castle Rock.’ He also served as a consulting producer for the show, which is based on the stories of Stephen King and combines characters and themes from the fictional town of Castle Rock. K’naan has an acting credit to his name as well. He essays the role of Brutha Fez, a rap artist, in the 2012 crime drama film ‘Cosmopolis.’ The movie, helmed by David Cronenberg, also stars Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, and Sarah Gadon.
Apart from his work in television and films, K’naan has a successful career as a rapper. He has so far released four studio albums, which are ‘My Life Is a Movie,’ ‘The Dusty Foot Philosopher,’ ‘Troubadour,’ and ‘Country, God or the Girl,’ and one live album, titled ‘The Dusty Foot on the Road.’ His famous tracks include “Wavin’ Flag,” “Take a Minute,” “Bang Bang,” “Hurt Me Tomorrow,” and “Is Anybody Out There?”
The cast of ‘Mother, Mother’ hasn’t been announced yet. The film is produced by Potboiler Productions, the company behind films like ‘Trespass Against Us,’ ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,’ ‘A Most Wanted Man,’ ‘A Little Chaos,’ and ‘Our Kind of Traitor.’ K’Naan and Andrea Calderwood (‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ and ‘Woman Walks Ahead’) serve as the producers, with Thérèsa Ryan (‘The Endless River’ and ‘Ladygrey’) attached as the co-producer and Daud Hassan serving as the associate producer.
