Santita Season 2 Plot and Cast Theories

Created by Luis Cámara and Gabrielle Galanter, Netflix’s ‘Santita‘ details the personal and professional lives of Dr. María José “Santita” Cano, whose life completely changes after a traumatic car accident. Though she survives, the mental toll is powerful enough that she calls off her wedding with her lover, Alejandro, essentially leaving him alone at the altar. Now, over 20 years later, their paths cross again, only with a world of differences in the middle. What starts out as an extreme friction between the two ex-lovers soon gives way to something more special and something less explicable. However, by the end of season 1 of this Spanish-language romance drama series, Santita has to let go of Alejandro as he takes his own life.

However, not long after Santita gets arrested for allegedly aiding him in the suicide, whatever remaining stability is left in her life is shattered for good. Though Netflix has not greenlit a season two as of writing, whether or not we get a sequel depends largely on fan engagement and the narrative scope. In the best-case scenario, fans can expect the sophomore season to be released sometime around 2028.

Santita Season 2 Will Have to Address the Show’s Burning Cliffhangers

‘Santita’ ends its inaugural season 1 on quite the open-ended note, with the eponymous protagonist being dragged to the police station as she begins to hallucinate a round of congratulations from her loved ones. As such, for a sequel to continue the story, it must answer the two burning questions: whether Santita actually winds up behind bars, and if her mental health condition is at all stable. Chances are that both questions will have less than palatable answers, and Santita’s road ahead might have way more hurdles than she bargained for. The only consolation she has amidst all of this is that the vial containing the poison is now gone, which means that the police have no actual proof that binds her to the crime. Though she might be released sooner rather than later, her real battle starts once she returns to society, as the people she once considered friends, family, and lovers are most likely all against her at this point.

The running idea behind Santita’s arc has always been to push her limits and see if there’s any character left who actually wants to shoulder that burden. Though Mauricio initially emerges as a potential partner who can bring her the happiness she needs, that doesn’t turn out to be the case. The last time we see him is when Santita discovers him kissing Cecilia. Alejandro already anticipated such an affair to take shape, and may have even encouraged it with that impromptu dinner party in an earlier episode. However, with both him and presumably even Mauricio now out of the picture, Santita is essentially back where she started: alone and desperate for a human connection. As such, a potential sequel run might help achieve a state of satisfaction without having to rely on others.

Santita Season 2 Will Most Likely Bid Goodbye to Alejandro’s Actor

In the scenario where a second season of ‘Santita’ is greenlit, fans can expect many of the core actors to reappear, including the star of the show, Paulina Dávila, who essays Dr. María José “Santita” Cano. Additionally, there is a good chance of actor Erik Hayser reprising his role as Mauricio alongside actor Ilse Salas, who plays Cecilia. In the same vein, fans might also see actors Sally Quiñonez, Álvaro Guerrero, Marco de la O, and Martín Altomaro to step back into the shoes of Alma, Lucas, Juan Antonio, and Juan Andrés, respectively.

While we don’t exactly know what the future holds for Pascal and his family, that is most likely an intentional effect, as his goal is to get Santita’s enemies to look in the wrong direction. As such, there is a distinct chance of Harding Junior returning to the role alongside actor Hector Kotsifakis, who plays Genaro in the show. Actor Cecilia Cañedo, who steals the spotlight as Lia every time she’s on screen, is most likely to have a more prominent role going forward, that is, if the sequel is greenlit.

However, the biggest change in a hypothetical ‘Santita’ season 2 is undoubtedly going to be that of Gael García Bernal’s departure, as his character, Alejandro, dies by suicide in the final moments of the season. That said, given the show’s affinity for flashback and dream sequences, there is a possibility that Bernal will have many more opportunities to don this fictional garb once again.

Santita Season 2 Might Turn Santita’s Arc Into a Cautionary Tale

Santita’s sudden arrest in the season 1 finale also puts an indefinite hold on her feud with her siblings regarding the vineyard, and a potential sequel might return to the plotline with a new angle. For now, we know that Santita has essentially made an enemy out of everyone except her dad, which means that any hopes of her getting scraps from the property deal are gone. Given that her brothers have all the resources they need, Santita most likely realizes that she cannot win things the easy way. What might follow is a family drama even larger than what unfolds in the first season, especially now that Santita has no reason to hold back on her secrets, particularly about Lia and Armando.

Throughout her journey as a doctor with a disability, Santita ponders giving in to her darkest urges, even if they come a cost. More often than not, these are symbolized with the help of dream sequences, which she now seems to be hallucinating into reality. All of this can easily turn into a cocktail of disaster if Santita doesn’t find a path of her own, especially as the love of her life is no longer with her. While a potential second season is bound to end up going more towards the technical side of things, fans can expect Santita, Mauricio, and the others to retain their eccentricities, and perhaps even amplify them.
