In January 2022, a tragedy unfolded in Clarksburg, Maryland, when 25-year-old Sarah Jane Harris was found dead. Although her untimely demise initially appeared to be an overdose, further investigation soon revealed a trail of reckless acts and a deeply troubling relationship. Lifetime’s ‘A Doctor to Die For: The Sarah Harris Story‘ delves deeper into the details of the case and the pieces of evidence that led officials to the person responsible for Sarah’s death. The episode also features interviews with her loved ones and the investigators who worked tirelessly to solve the case.
Sarah Harris Had Built a Remarkable Career as a Surgical Technician
On December 5, 1996, Sarah Jane Harris arrived as a blessing into the lives of Mark and Tina Lynn Harris. Growing up in a tight-knit family in suburban Maryland, she always received an abundance of love and support from her parents. She had always been close to her sisters, Rachel Catherine Harris and Victoria Alexandra Ladson, and her brother, Christopher Alexander Ladson. Sarah’s family and friends remembered her as a free-spirited, ambitious, kind, and passionate individual. From a young age, she had been keen to learn new things, which helped her excel in high school. After her graduation, Sarah went on to complete her higher studies.

Sarah also learned several other languages, including Spanish, Russian, and German. Furthermore, she had gradually become fluent in American Sign Language. By her mid-20s, she began modeling and competing in beauty pageants. Sarah eventually won the Miss Maryland Petite Pageant in 2020. In her free time, she enjoyed drawing, listening to music, and taking pictures. Another significant part of her life revolved around her dog, Winston. By October 2020, she began her career as a Surgical Technician for Dr. James Michael Ryan. Over time, Sarah and James grew closer, and they began dating around January 2021.
Sarah Harris Was Found Dead in the Living Room of a Maryland Home
Shortly after they began dating, Sarah moved into James’ home on the 13900 block of Godwit Street in Clarksburg, Maryland. Unfortunately, she and her family faced a great tragedy when her brother, Christopher, passed away after suffering a heart attack on January 8, 2022, in Montana. The situation further took a grave turn on the morning of January 26, 2022. On that fateful day, James called 911 to report that he had found Sarah unresponsive on the floor of the living room when he came down. When officials arrived at the scene, they found the living room in disarray and pronounced her dead. Reports state that James told them that he believed Sarah had passed away from a drug overdose.

At the scene, investigators also discovered multiple drugs and syringes in Sarah’s purse and the kitchen sink. James claimed to the officials that he went to sleep between 10 pm and 11 pm after watching TV with his girlfriend, and that she later slept on the couch. Upon further searching the house, they recovered bottles of propofol, diazepam, ketamine, and midazolam. The authorities considered her death to be a result of a drug overdose. The autopsy revealed that Sarah had multiple fresh puncture wounds on her right arm. It also revealed that her cause of death was intoxication from diazepam, ketamine, and propofol, all of which were found in her bloodstream.
A Trail of Text Messages Led Investigators to Focus on Sarah’s Boyfriend
At the scene, authorities first interrogated James, who alleged that he had previously seen Sarah injecting herself with several drugs, and she was struggling with her mental health. In his statements, he also claimed that she had bipolar disorder. As per the official reports, when detectives spoke with Tina, she informed them that during a phone call with Sarah, she suspected that her daughter was under the influence of drugs. She went on to say that she and Rachel eventually visited the 25-year-old at James’ home, where they discovered syringes, IV bags, and drug vials everywhere, and even took a picture of it. Court records state that Tina further alleged that James had previously confessed to providing Sarah with those drugs.

According to police records, a breakthrough arrived when Rachel gained access to Sarah’s laptop and found certain text messages between her sister and James. Rachel eventually submitted the photos she had taken at James’ house during a previous visit, along with the text messages, to the authorities. Upon digging deeper, they discovered a text in which Sarah mentioned experiencing sleeplessness and anxiety, to which James assured her that he could help her with medical drugs. In another text from James on December 20, 2021, he wrote, “If you wake up… I just went to change after I gave you ketamine. Just now.” On the night prior to Sarah’s death, she had texted, “Is it possible to bring home ketamine when you come…”

In response to Sarah’s text, James wrote, “Yes, I will bring some home. I love you, baby.” Since he was a doctor, the investigators and experts believed that he was aware of how lethal a combined dose of the drugs found in her system would be. Ultimately, on March 22, 2022, James was taken into custody and faced the charges of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree depraved heart murder, one count of possession with intent to distribute, and two counts of drug distribution. His jury trial began on August 16, 2023, and he was convicted of all charges on August 25. On January 3, 2024, James was finally sentenced to 45 years in prison for all the charges. He also received credit for the 653 days he had already served.
