However, the case turns out to be more complicated than they imagined. Authorities believe she died by suicide, but Bjørn refuses to accept that explanation. Driven by grief and suspicion, he begins retracing her final minutes and questioning the people who knew her. His quest unfolds through a series of tense encounters, with each conversation revealing uncomfortable details about his daughter’s life and forcing him to reconsider what he thought he knew.
As Bjørn moves closer to the truth, his investigation becomes increasingly personal and emotionally volatile. The Danish crime drama series turns a father’s desperate search for answers into an intimate mystery about grief and secrets. Much like ‘Blood Sacrifice,’ the show is a layered story that features an investigator who refuses to settle for a simple explanation for a death while also facing emotional pressure and mounting obstacles.
7. The Investigation (2020)
‘The Investigation’ or ‘Efterforskningen’ is the tale of Copenhagen homicide chief Jens Møller (Søren Malling) as he leads the painstaking search for answers after Swedish journalist Kim Wall disappears aboard a submarine. Working closely with prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen (Pilou Asbæk), Wall’s parents, and others, Jens gradually pieces together what happened. The investigation stretches over months, requiring meticulous searches and advanced forensic work to establish the circumstances of Kim’s death and build a case against the perpetrator.
Based on real events and directed by Tobias Lindholm, the Danish crime drama series focuses on the cost of justice and the relentless efforts of the investigating team. ‘The Investigation’ and ‘Blood Sacrifice’ portray the immense personal and professional pressure surrounding difficult investigations. While Jens’ team must solve a shocking case that offers no easy explanations, Thomas faces mounting pressure as the killings continue.
6. The Åre Murders (2025-)
‘The Åre Murders’ delves into the experiences of Hanna Ahlander (Carla Sehn), a Stockholm detective who retreats to the ski resort of Åre after being suspended from her job and dealing with a breakup. Her attempt to escape her troubles takes a shocking turn when a teenage girl disappears, drawing Hanna back into investigative work. She joins local officer Daniel Lindskog (Kardo Razzazi), who is already struggling with a staffing shortage at the station and personal difficulties. The creative team of Rike Jokela, Jari Olavi Rantala, and Kirsi Porkka is behind this Finnish crime drama series, which combines a murder investigation with a story of grief and trauma. ‘Deadwind’ and ‘Blood Sacrifice’ are both psychologically twisted shows that begin with murder, but gradually reveal a much larger and more complicated picture that challenges the investigators in unexpected ways.
3. The Valhalla Murders (2019-2020)
‘The Valhalla Murders’ begins when police profiler Arnar (Björn Thors) comes back to Iceland to assist investigator Kata (Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir) with a string of killings. A photograph found during the investigation provides the first clue that the murders may be connected, sending the pair toward Valhalla, a long-abandoned boys’ home. The institution’s troubled history soon emerges as an important piece of the puzzle, with events from decades earlier appearing to have consequences in the present. As Arnar and Kata reconstruct what happened at Valhalla, they uncover secrets that could explain the pattern of violence they are confronting. But with the killer still active, they must unravel the connection between the past and present before another victim is claimed.
Thordur Palsson lends his creative input to this Icelandic crime drama series, which is loosely inspired by real events. ‘The Valhalla Murders’ is connected to ‘Blood Sacrifice’ through its investigation into a series of killings that leads detectives toward a deeper, darker mystery that grows more puzzling at every turn. 2. Wisting (2019-2025)
‘Wisting’ explores the trials and tribulations of detective William Wisting (Sven Nordin) after a body discovered in Larvik, Norway, reveals a link to an American serial killer who has evaded capture for more than two decades. Believed to be living under another identity in Norway, the fugitive becomes the focus of an international investigation when FBI agents Maggie Griffin (Carrie-Anne Moss) and John Bantham (Richie Campbell) join Wisting’s team. At the same time, Wisting’s journalist daughter becomes involved in a story that intersects dangerously with his investigation, placing her at risk. While Wisting struggles to balance the investigation and personal complications surrounding his daughter, an accusation threatens his professional standing and forces him to fight on multiple fronts.
The Norwegian crime drama series from creators Trygve Allister Diesen and Kathrine Valen Zeiner is based on the novels ‘The Caveman,’ ‘The Hunting Dogs,’ ‘The Inner Darkness,’ and ‘The Night Man’ by Jørn Lier Horst. Similar to ‘Blood Sacrifice,’ the show expands beyond a conventional murder investigation, becoming a chaotic web of secrets and dangers in which the killer and the investigators each face their own complexities.

Their search becomes more urgent as the killer continues targeting vulnerable victims, while the disappearance of a politician’s child introduces another troubling dimension to the case. As Thulin and Hess connect the scattered evidence, they are drawn into an increasingly disturbing investigation that tests their ability to anticipate an elusive killer. With Dorte Warnøe Hagh, David Sandreuter, and Mikkel Serup serving as creators, the Danish crime thriller series is based on Søren Sveistrup’s eponymous book. ‘The Chestnut Man’ is strongly connected to ‘Blood Sacrifice’ through its central investigation into a killer who repeatedly targets victims according to a specific and disturbing pattern. In both shows, the detectives must move beyond individual murders and identify the larger motive, even as they face psychological battles.
