The Indigenous hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids will briefly step down from their concert stages this summer to shoot a TV show! CBC’s upcoming new sitcom ‘Snotty Nose Rez Kids,’ starring the First Nations musicians Quinton “Yung Trybez” Nyce and Darren “Young D” Metz, begins filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, in August. The show is created by the artists themselves, along with Vance Banzo and Matt Kippen, with Jennifer Podemski serving as the showrunner.
The plot of the series, which will consist of eight half-hour episodes, is inspired by the real-life experiences of the two artists, who are also best friends. The narrative chronicles their journey from leaving the remote Kitamaat Village in the Haisla Nation community to pursuing their rap dreams. The show aims to fictionalize these setbacks and triumphs with a touch of comedy. Some plotlines will follow their reliance on this new community, which helps them launch their careers.
Nyce and Metz, known collectively as Snotty Nose Rez Kids, are celebrated for their energetic performances and socially awakening lyrics. Since the launch of their debut album, ‘The Average Savage,’ the duo has garnered attention for addressing important issues such as Indigenous identity, culture, and politics through their music. Their rise in the music industry has been marked by subsequent acclaim and powerful live concerts, earning them a dedicated fan base and critical recognition.
The project was originally conceived as a documentary before taking an entirely different and comedic route. The official announcement from the artists arrived at a CBC event, where they confirmed their involvement as co-creators, executive producers, and story consultants, in addition to providing the music for its soundtrack. Nyce added, “We use humor as a way of healing and to bring our people together,” emphasizing their expectations with the current format.
Returning to Vancouver for filming holds special significance for Snotty Nose Rez Kids as the setting for the show is, in fact, rooted in reality. The British Columbian city welcomed Nyce and Metz when they took the first steps toward their dream, witnessing their history up close. In addition to its music scene, Vancouver is known for being one of the top locations in North America for film and television productions, having hosted the filming of projects that range from Lifetime and Hallmark movies to major Hollywood blockbusters. Among other projects being shot or about to commence shooting in the region are Darren Aronofsky’s Netflix series ‘The Craving’ and Ryan Phillippe’s ‘One Mile.’
