In November 2003, Jeanne Trantel got a call from the police and was informed that her husband, Stephen Trantel, had been arrested. She could not understand how he was being charged with multiple bank robberies. Even Stephen denied the charges himself, but when hard evidence against him was found, he accepted his crimes. It was a shocking case that blew up because Stephen was seen as a well-to-do man in his community, living in an upscale neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Stephen Trantel Never Told Joanne Trantel About His Financial Problems
Stephen Trantel and Jeanne Callahan met in the early 1990s, when Jeanne was 24. Stephen was working as a Wall Street clerk during the day and bartending at night, and Jeanne was drawn to his ambition and work ethic. They began dating and married in 1994. Stephen eventually established himself as a commodities trader in Manhattan. During one particularly successful year, he made about $300,000. He regularly gave Jeanne cash for the household, and after their marriage, the couple appeared to have built a comfortable life. They lived in Rockville Center, while Jeanne stayed home with their sons, Stephen Jr. and Ryan.
That stability began to unravel as their expenses increased. Stephen had bought a larger house for the family, but the mortgage payments rose sharply. At the same time, private preschool and other costs added to the pressure. Stephen’s trading losses eventually exceeded $200,000. His mother was also diagnosed with a terminal illness. Eventually, Stephen could no longer trade because he lacked the money required to remain on the commodities floor. Still, he concealed the truth from Jeanne. Each morning, he dressed for work and left the house pretending he still had a job. Stephen’s first robbery took place shortly before July 4. The teller handed him nearly $11,000, and the entire robbery took roughly 30 seconds. Over the following four months, he carried out eight more robberies, taking more than $60,000 altogether.
The investigation finally turned when a teller at the State Bank of Long Island kept the demand note Stephen had handed over. Investigators recovered a fingerprint from the paper. It did not produce a match in the FBI database, but a local database connected it to Stephen’s 1984 DWI arrest. On November 28, 2003, police stopped Stephen while he was returning from a fishing trip. A search of his SUV uncovered hats and sunglasses resembling those used by the robber, as well as latex gloves inside his young son’s backpack. Stephen initially denied recognizing himself in surveillance photographs, but the evidence eventually forced him to admit what he had done. That is when Jeanne found the extent of her then-husband’s crimes.
Stephen Trantel Has a Loving Relationship With His Two Sons Today
Stephen Trantel pleaded guilty in March 2004 to three counts of first-degree robbery. It was part of an agreement that required him to confess to all ten robberies. He was sentenced to nine years in prison and agreed to pay restitution. Shortly afterward, Jeanne Trantel filed for divorce from him. Since his release in 2012, Stephen has rebuilt his life considerably. He has worked across several fields, including hospitality and home improvement. Since 2000, he has operated Transutti Home Improvement in Chatham, New York, taking on projects of different sizes. He also worked as kitchen manager at Bellini’s Italian Eatery from 2016 to 2018, managed The Great 518 in Albany from 2018 to 2019, and later became manager of Track 32 Italian Restaurant.
Since October 2025, Stephen has been working as a chief cook with Edison Chouest Offshore, a role that takes him out to sea. His sons have remained an important part of his life. During his incarceration, they continued visiting their father, and their relationship has endured over the years. They remain in contact and appear to spend time together regularly. They even came down to celebrate Stephen’s birthday with him in September 2025. His life today also extends beyond work and family. He has maintained an active presence online and has expressed views on political and public issues continuously.
Jeanne Trantel is Making a Name as a Real Estate Agent
Since her divorce, Jeanne Callahan has remained the parent who made sure her sons could continue visiting their father in prison. In an interview, she shared that the children always knew the truth about their father, while also acknowledging that Stephen loved them deeply. Over time, she slowly handed the responsibility of arranging the visits to someone else. Jeanne has also spoken about how difficult it was to regain her footing after the divorce. She had two young children to raise, and her in-laws and parents helped her through those first few days when she was trying to rebuild her life.
In 2008, Jeanne was working as a real estate agent and massage therapist to support her family. She later fully stepped into real estate and now runs her own business, Jeanne Callahan North & South L.I. Real Estate. She has also turned her experiences into books. In January 2010, she released ‘Disguised Blessings: A Wife’s Story of Her Wall Street Husband Turned Bank Robber.’ In July 2022, she co-authored ‘Till Heist Do Us Part’ with Michael Harvey, followed by ‘Life After Chronic Trauma’ in April 2024. Jeanne does not lead a highly public life, but she has continued to build a life on her own terms despite the obstacles she faced.
