‘The Breadwinner’ follows Nate Wilcox, a salesman and longtime family provider whose life unexpectedly changes after his wife, Katie Wilcox, lands a major business deal through Shark Tank. He recounted telling the caller that since his daughter was on a yellow bus, they should simply place her on one, and he would locate her later.

He divulged, “I wasn’t allowed to watch a lot of stuff, and so that was a big inspiration for even making this movie. … At 12 years old, we would have been very excited to go see this movie. I think a lot back on that, and that’s been with the comedy too.” The movie’s family-friendly nature stems from the idea that everyone should be able to watch it, even if they come from strictly religious households.
Bargatze’s religious family is a major part of his identity as a comedian and actor, and this aspect of his life is represented in the movie.
