The Marked Woman Ending Explained: Is Lucia Dead or Alive? Where is Clara?

Helmed by Gabe Ibáñez, Netflix’s ‘The Marked Woman,’ also known as ‘La Desconocida,’ is a crime thriller movie that begins with the discovery of an unconscious woman trapped in a shipping container. Though she shows visible signs of torture and abuse, the woman seems to have no recollection of the past, except for vague ties to the underworld, and a string of assassins eager to finish the job. Desperate to live, as well as to find and punish the perpetrator who made her life hell, the woman joins hands with a brilliant, but mourning detective, as well as an officer who may or may not be connected to someone from the woman’s past. Based on the eponymous novel by Rosa Montero and Olivier Truc, the movie ends with the woman and the officers supporting her learning that this conspiracy has roots deeper than anyone could have predicted. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Marked Woman Plot Synopsis

‘The Marked Woman’ begins with a woman named Lucia Melgar giving a video testimony against Officer Qique Zarate, claiming that he harassed her in return for information about the underworld. Shortly after, Lucia is asked to board a bus under the orders of a man named Gaston, but she manages to slip into the washroom just in time to reunite with a woman, who seems to be a confidante. Lucia tells her that she is skipping town for a while and hands over a number in case the woman needs urgent help. Some time later, a shipping container draws a guard dog’s attention, and opening it reveals the same mysterious woman, bound and barely alive. What is even more peculiar about this case is her complete amnesia about her past, which seems to have developed as a trauma response.

Detective Anna Ripoll, having recently taken time off due to a personal tragedy, is both ready and desperate to make a comeback. As such, when she is assigned the woman’s case, she wastes little time widening the investigation’s scope to include a human trafficking angle. It soon becomes clear that the woman was quite important to whoever was keeping her captive, as an assassin is sent to finish the job, but ultimately dies at the hands of the woman. Just then, Officer Zarate himself arrives at the scene, declaring that she is the sister of Lucia, who has since gone missing. Though the name doesn’t immediately bring back memories, the woman learns it’s Alicia Garone, AKA Clara.

With assassins on the loose, Clara, Ripoll, and Zarate decide to go into hiding as they run through several contacts of people who were around the yard during the torture. One of the suspicious candidates, Manuel Horvat, turns out to be a gambling house operator working alongside Gaston. Though Ripoll and team track him down, Clara is captured in the process, giving him a window to escape. From there, we learn that Manuel, along with his leader, Gaston, is after a mysterious crypto wallet code that Clara seems to have memorized, and as Ripoll and team manage to save her from the brink of death, Gaston, who is revealed to be the police chief Falco, escapes, ready to scheme anew.

The Marked Woman: Is Lucia Dead or Alive? Where Did She Go?

‘The Marked Woman’ ends with the revelation that Lucia has long been dead, and Police Chief Falco is to blame. Though both Clara and Zarate are led to believe otherwise, throughout the movie, the reality is that Lucia’s life ended the moment she was exposed as an informant. Everything from that point onward, be her fake testimonial against Zarate, or her supposed escape to a faraway town, was all merely delaying the inevitable. However, her last conversation with Clara at the public toilet suggests that a part of her truly believed that this would be a fresh start. She promised to do away with drugs, learn from her mistakes, and, perhaps most importantly, keep in touch. All of those hopes are squashed at the end, leaving Clara with nothing but the coldness of reality.

Towards the end of their exchange, Lucia hands Clara a slip with Gaston AKA Falco’s number, believing he is the only person who can help her. However, this too ends up working against her, as she has yet to realize that Falco is the big bad in this equation. Instead, she sends her sister, arguably the most valuable person in this entire operation, directly to the enemy, setting up the events of ‘The Marked Woman.’ Realizing that Clara has the crypto wallet code memorized, Falco likely realizes he cannot kill her and must resort to other methods to obtain that information. However, Clara’s sheer determination to reunite with her sister is the only thing that keeps her going for this long, until help ultimately arrives.

Given that the shipping yard is the base for the human trafficking operation, Clara’s discovery is likely a glitch in Falco’s system rather than a genuine move on his part. However, with fate ultimately bringing Clara back to that place at the end of the movie, Falco, having killed his right-hand man, has no choice but to make himself public. At the same time, Clara and Ripoll discover the containers full of women who had been subjected to abuse and trafficking, but with Lucia nowhere to be found, Clara is left with no choice but to assume the worst. Later, when she confronts Falco, her worst fears are confirmed, forcing her to reconcile with the abruptness of her last conversation with her sister and its fading in her memory.

Is Zarate Dead?

Before Clara realizes the truth about Lucia’s fate, it is Zarate who figures out the truth and has to pay the price for it. Though he is ordered to return to his division and face the trial against him head-on, Zarate decides at the last moment to make a U-turn and go straight to where Ripoll and Clara are headed. For someone who has been self-serving this entire time, this is a remarkably selfless act, which is precisely what makes it so unpredictable for Falco. With Zarate on their tail, Falco’s plan of killing Ripoll and company goes away, and this just forces him to come out into the open ahead of time. However, his attempts to trick Zarate into going back end up in failure, leaving him with no choice but to come clean, with a gun cocked to Zarate’s face.

When Zarate learns that this entire time Falco has been after the crypto-wallet key, he realizes there might be a way to draw Clara out of this mess. As it turns out, he already recorded the code the moment Clara drew it out for him and Ripoll, so it can now be transferred without her even being involved. With the physical threat pulled out of the equation, Zarate nearly hands the video over until he learns that Falco killed Lucia. While it’s never made explicit, ‘The Marked Woman’ strongly implies that Zarate was in love with Lucia, and hearing about her death leads him to believe that nothing can save Clara except taking out Falco first. In the ensuing brawl, however, Falco manages to gain the upper hand, fatally shooting Zarate before making a hopeless exit.

Why Does Clara Kill Falco? Where Does She Go?

Zarate’s life ends with a loud bang, alerting Ripoll to the presence of others and essentially ruining Falco’s ambush. Later, when she and Clara split, it’s Ripoll who learns of Falco’s real identity through Zarate’s dying breaths. By the time she makes it back to Clara, however, the power dynamic is changed completely. Falco, having caught up to Clara, makes the fatal mistake of telling her that her sister is dead. With nothing left to lose, Clara strikes back with her full force, disarming the gun just in time for Ripoll to join the scene. However, even when the scene is entirely in their control, Clara realizes that there might not be another moment where she can truly, assuredly exact vengeance for Lucia’s death. As such, she shoots Falco in cold blood, knowing that it is a crime that will force her to be on the run forever.

Though Clara’s actions stem from anger and hostility, it is also true that Falco was among the most connected people in the police industry. Chances are, that he might have even got off scot-free, which can only mean world of horrors for Ripoll and Clara. As such, her bold action in that moment ends up doing Ripoll good in the long run, as a six-month flash forward reveals that she’s been promoted. Just then, she gets a call from an anonymous number with no voice at the other end, which instantly tells her it’s none other than Clara, confirming that she is still alive and kicking. The scene marks a direct inverse of an earlier moment when Ripoll anonymously called Clara to see if she was being sincere about her amnesia. Now, however, Clara is more in control of her life than ever, and her call only cements that position.

What Was in the Voicemail? What Will Happen to Ripoll?

While Ripoll and Clara ultimately go their separate ways, there is one more detail that ‘The Marked Woman’ still has left to answer. From the very beginning, Ripoll seems to be hesitant in clicking on the final voicemail her brother sent to her before taking his own life, fearing what that might bring. The real reason, however, is that Ripoll is afraid of that voicemail imposing a sense of finality. So long as she does not know the contents of the message, she can remember her brother and their dynamic however she pleases, but merely listening to that message once is bound to change that. A part of this fear stems from her own guilt about sacrificing family life for work, and though that translates to guilt about not saving her brother, the actual contents of the voicemail thwart those doubts.

The voicemail left by Ripoll’s brother, essentially his final words, is nothing but love for his sister. Even in his lowest moments, he ensures that Ripoll doesn’t feel guilty about his death, essentially subverting her entire arc thus far. In a way, however, Ripoll hears the message at exactly the right moment, as only after saving Clara’s life does she regain the confidence to face her life headfirst, even when it’s filled to the brim with emotional unpredictabilities. While Clara may not have gotten a chance to bid her sister a proper goodbye, Ripoll ultimately finds the closure she has always needed, as well as the strength she will always need from here on out.
