‘The Polygamist’ season 1 wraps up its narrative with victories won and comeuppances delivered. Jonasi Gomora, the man who strung along four different women, three of whom he married in a polygamy made of lies and deceit, dies after reckoning with the isolating consequences of his actions. His first wife, Joyce, who suffered gravely under his thumb and at his hands, has her revenge and revels in it too by ensuring her husband knows that his demise is a result of her scheming.
Furthermore, with some play-pretend kindness and camaraderie, she even manages to ensure that Jonasi’s wealth passes down entirely to her own children. Nonetheless, while her conflict with her husband resolves itself, another storm seems to be brewing on the horizon for the Gomora family. Since Netflix has yet to renew the series for a second season, whether or not this climactic storyline will come to fruition remains up in the air. Even so, if season 2 is greenlit soon, fans can expect the series to return in 2028.
The Polygamist Season 2 Can Revolve Around the Second Generation of the Gomora Family
In season 1 of ‘The Polygamist,’ the narrative introduces the audience to the numerous offspring of Jonasi Gomora. There’s Mpume, Menzi, and their baby brother Nkazimulo, his children born out of his marriage to Joyce, his first wife. Later, his extramarital affair with Matipa resulted in the birth of twin girls, Ashley and Hayley. Even though Joyce is heartbroken at this revelation, she tries to find a solution by pitching the idea of polygamy/ However, little does she know her husband already has a secret second wife, making Matipa his third wife. From this illicit second union, he also has a kid, Sarah, who poses as the daughter of his brother in front of his family and the public. Over the course of the first season, these characters undergo unique storylines of their own.

Therefore, there’s a strong possibility that these characters might take center stage in a potential season 2, becoming the focus of the narrative in the wake of their father’s death. The show’s producer, Thuli Zuma, echoed a similar idea in her conversation with News 24 regarding the possible future of the project. While discussing the idea of exploring the children’s lives in potential future episodes, the producer said, “After watching the series, if I were to write a sequel, I would certainly look at the children’s lives growing up in that setup.” The ending of season 1, which reveals Menzi, the sole inheritor of his father’s fortune, falling into bed with Lindani, Jonasi’s former mistress, hints at a similar future for the story. Thus, fans can expect his union between Menizi and Lindani and its ensuing influence on the rest of the Gomora kids to possibly become a major plot point in the future.
The Polygamist Will Likely Bring Back the Original Cast For Season 2
As revealed by the producer Thuli Zuma herself, the show’s creative team seems to be interested in the possibility of retaining a focus on the Gomora family for a potential season 2. This means that most of the cast from season 1 will likely make a comeback to the project in the event of its renewal. First off, characters who are Jonasi’s legacies are most likely to return for a future season 2. This includes Menzi (Wonder Ndlovu), Mpume (Noluthando Shabalala), Sarah (Lwazie Keith Mfeka), and their younger siblings Ashley, Hayley, and Nkazimulo. Furthermore, individuals who are a part of these characters’ social circle will likely also continue contributing to the story.

Therefore, characters like Lindani (Luyanda Zwane), Freedom (Vuyo Biyela), and Mpume’s potential love interest, X, can be expected to remain a part of the series. Additionally, the previous leads of the series will also likely reprise their roles, retaining a central role in the narrative. Actors like Gugu Gumede (Joyce), Kwanele Mthethwa (Matipa), Celeste Ntuli (Essie), and Magesh (Kenneth Nkosi) are most likely to step back into their characters’ shoes. Additionally, despite Jonasi’s death, his actor, S’Dumo Mtshali, can continue to be a part of the project through flashbacks. Lastly, new characters are bound to become additions to the series if it expands past the first season.
The Polygamist Season 2 Can Explore the Sister-Wives Different Experience of Widowhood
When Jonasi was alive, he certainly made life complicated for his wives, Joyce, Matipa, and Essie. He consistently lied to and cheated on his first wife, kept his third wife a hidden secret, and ignored his third wife after exploiting her for his benefit. Furthermore, he was physically and sexually abusive to almost all of his spouses. Yet, by the time he dies, his death means different things for the three different women. For Matipa, his death brings a sense of freedom since she can finally stop running away from her old life and her children. For Essie, his death is a true tragedy, which she mourns without any letover contempt.

As for Joyce, who set up the pieces that ultimately brought Jonasi to his deathbed, she finds a unique sense of victory from his departure. Naturally, this means that as these three women continue going forward with their lives, they’re bound to wear the title of a widow differently. Season 2 can focus on what their lives look like without Jonasi in the picture and the different ways in which they deal with his death. Furthermore, there’s bound to be an inheritance battle between all three women’s children, which will likely shape the nature of their own storylines as well. On the other hand, if Minze undergoes a corruption arc, ending up in the same footsteps as his father, it promises to become a foundational conflict for Joyce’s narrative in a potential season 2.
