To Catch a Cheater Ending Explained: Who Killed Hannah?

Helmed by Damián Romay, Lifetime’s ‘To Catch a Cheater’ begins with a harmless prank between friends, which soon goes awfully wrong. When Hannah and her friends decide to test their boyfriends’ loyalty by temporarily swapping partners, Hannah seems the least pleased about it. While she participates with some reluctance, the next morning takes a tragic turn, with Hannah’s dead body being discovered on the beach. With no clear answer as to how she died, her mother, Monica, embarks on a quest to get to the truth, even when nefarious forces seem to be obstructing her at every turn. By the end of this murder mystery drama movie, the identity of the killer becomes inextricable from the broader commentary on transparency in relationships and beyond. SPOILERS AHEAD.

To Catch a Cheater Plot Synopsis

‘To Catch a Cheater’ begins by introducing Hannah, a studious girl who seems to be at a rough patch in her life, with her parents having divorced recently. One night, her best friends, Charli and Meghan, propose a cheater’s pact, where each one of them has to flirt with the other’s partner for a night, and see if they flirt back. Though Hannah is in a stable relationship with a boy named Hunter, this game sparks some doubts in her head, especially when she is paired with Charli’s older and unruly boyfriend, Nick. Meanwhile, the girls’ mothers, also close friends, chat in another room, with Kim, Meghan’s mother, revealing her fears that her husband, Doug, is leaving her. Hannah’s mother, Monica, and Charli’s mother, Bridget, empathize with Kim, with everybody being unaware of what is soon to unfold.

On the night of the cheater’s pact, Charli and Meghan stick to the plan, but Hannah finds herself all alone, with Nick nowhere to be seen. Just then, she spots something that causes her to run away in panic, and the next morning, it is revealed that Hannah is dead, in what appears to be a suicide. However, her parents, Monica and David, refuse to believe that this is the end of the story, and soon get their hands on a private diary Hannah had maintained and entrusted to her school therapist. While Monica struggles to bring herself to read the entries, that very night, someone breaks into her home to steal and destroy the diary. That someone is later revealed to be Hunter, who confesses to working on Charli’s orders, as she believes that the diary might give away the truth about the cheater’s pact.

With the truth out in the open, Monica slowly comes to realize that Charli was somewhat of a bully in Hannah’s life, and this has an adverse effect on her relationship with Bridget. Meanwhile, Monica’s suspicions only grow when David is attacked shortly after personally talking to Nick, and later, when Hannah’s necklace is found by Charli’s bedside. While Monica believes the teens committed the murder and hid from their parents’ protection, a bigger reveal comes through. One day, she discovers that Kim’s husband, Doug, has been having an affair with Bridget, who also happens to be Kim’s business partner. As Monica reveals the truth to Kim over coffee, Kim, in turn, knocks her unconscious and drives her to the beach, determined to bury the truth.

To Catch a Cheater Ending: Who Killed Hannah? Why?

At the end of ‘To Catch a Cheater,’ the killer is revealed to be none other than Kim, Meghan’s mother, who pushed Hannah to her death in a desperate attempt to cover up her own husband’s affair. As it turns out, Kim wasn’t a stranger to the fact that Doug was cheating on her with Bridget, but chose to remain silent. Her reasons for this were twofold: the first, the upcoming business deal with Bridget; and the second, more important, that she didn’t want Meghan to know the truth about her father. While the marriage had already been going downhill for some time, Kim didn’t know the exact reason until she followed Doug one night and found him kissing Bridget. Unfortunately for Hannah, that was also the night of the cheater’s pact, and she was right there as the scene unfolded.

While Doug and Bridget remained oblivious to the fact that two people had seen them, an entirely different conflict unfolded between Hannah and Kim. Hannah wanted to tell the truth to her mother and to Meghan, but Kim was convinced that doing so would ruin her daughter’s life. Instead, she tried to snatch the phone from Hannah’s hand and, in the process, accidentally pushed her off the beach’s platform. While we see a flashback to what transpired that night, it’s unclear whether this is framed from Kim’s perspective or an objective glimpse at Hannah’s death. Regardless of whether the push was intentional or accidental, Hannah landed headfirst on a rocky floor, dying instantly, and it’s what Kim did after this that makes her malice clear as day.

With Hannah’s phone still in her hand, and a chatbox to Monica still open, Kim decided to write fake messages, making it look like Hannah had decided to take her own life. In reality, however, this was the start of a long cover-up, leading all the way up to the present. In many ways, the narrative itself obfuscates the killer’s identity for too long, with Charli, Nick, and even Dough emerging as red herrings at one point. In reality, however, the killer turns out to be the person Monica suspected the least, and it is entirely for self-preservation reasons. In trying to protect her family’s image, Kim doesn’t think twice before destroying another family. Fittingly, the film ends with her being taken in by the police, and though we don’t know whether she goes behind bars for good, at the very least, Monica now knows who took her daughter’s life.

Does Bridget Live or Die?

Bridget survives the ending of ‘To Catch a Cheater,’ pulling through the bullet wound inflicted by Kim. While Bridget’s fate was left hanging in the air for a moment, it should be noted that she was shot in the arm, and not in any vital organs. With the police arriving soon enough, Bridget got the help she needed, which brings us to the present, where she is alive and recovering at the hospital. Surprisingly, the person sitting by her bedside turns out to be Monica, despite their enmity in the scenes prior to this. Having realized that the real culprit is Kim, Monica reflects on things in an entirely new light, and it begins by reconciling with her friend. Despite their differences, Bridget didn’t hesitate before jumping between the gun and Monica, and that is perhaps the only reason why she’s breathing today.

While Kim’s extreme actions cannot be justified in any way, on some level, Bridget understands that it’s her and Doug’s secret that set off this twisted chain of events. At the heart of this movie is a dialogue about family secrets and how they have the potential to ruin long-standing dynamics, as seen in the case of Kim. While Monica and Bridget almost lose their friendship over the course of the movie, the ending comes as a sobering moment for both of them, emphasizing how parents’ lives and actions can have a trickle-down effect on their children. In the final moments of the film, Bridget reflects on how her affair had a negative effect on Charli’s psyche, causing her to lash out at others. Something similar can be said about Kim’s actions as well, and Monica now realizes that the only way to fix this is by breaking the cycle.

Who Attacked David? Do He and Monica Get Back Together?

While much of the movie’s mystery can be explained as Kim covering up her tracks, the group’s attack on David doesn’t seem to fit into the puzzle as easily. To begin with, we distinctly see the faces of multiple, nameless characters who pounce on David, and are never shown again. The connection between them and Kim seems tenuous at first, but is ultimately confirmed by Kim herself. After she learned that David was doing some digging of his own, a desperate Kim decided to respond with force, paying some people to attack David and hopefully scare the family into submission. Doing this also made her even less of a suspect, as now everyone thought that the killer was one of the men.

In reality, however, the attack on David had the opposite effect and confirmed in Monica’s heart that there is something nefarious going on behind the scenes, and it’s connected to Hannah’s death. However, this attack also has a second, more unexpected outcome: it brings David and Monica back together in some capacity. Despite the messy divorce, neither parent ever wanted Hannah to feel the pressure of it all, but in living like that, they eventually let assumptions take over. As the movie nears its end, both David and Monica reflect on their mistakes and how they will remember Hannah through their memories as long as possible. While it’s not explicitly confirmed, the ending strongly implies that the couple gets back together and works through their issues.
