Lifetime’s ‘Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story’ follows Genelle Guzman, a Trinidadian woman living in NYC whose ordinary workday becomes a fight for survival on September 11, 2001. Working on the 64th floor of the North Tower, Genelle is at her office when an aircraft crashes into the building, leaving her trapped beneath the rubble after the towers collapse. As rescue teams struggle to reach those caught in the destruction, Genelle finds herself completely isolated, with little hope of being found alive. Her partner, Roger, anxiously waits for news, while her former lover, David, and her daughter, Kimberly, remain in Trinidad, watching the unfolding disaster from afar.
With time running out, Genelle turns to prayer and clings to the hope of seeing her daughter again. Trapped and facing what seems like certain death, she also begins reflecting on her past, questioning the choices she has made. While the rescue effort continues, Genelle waits for a miracle that could bring her back to her loved ones. A rescue dog named Tracker and Evan, a cop, prove crucial in Genelle’s journey, as uncertainty rises. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Tracker’s Character is Inspired by the Efforts of Real Canine Heroes
Tracker’s actions prove to be the difference between life and death for Genelle, who looks for any sign of help. The heroic Tracker appears to be inspired by the remarkable work of real dogs who were at the scene during 9/11. While the dog is called “Tracker” in the film, the real-life German Shepherd who reportedly inspired the character was named “Trakr.” The canine Trakr arrived at the scene with his handler, James Symington, and joined the rescue efforts. Trakr reportedly detected hints of life beneath the rubble of one of the towers, and his actions led responders to the area where Genelle Guzman was trapped and needed help. Trakr’s ability to detect clues of life proved to be a crucial moment in reality, much like Tracker’s actions in the film.
Genelle Guzman is said to have described the experience to Animal Planet for the documentary ‘Hero Dogs of 9/11,’ recalling the moment Trakr found her as one that gave her hope and happiness. Trakr was one of more than 300 specially trained dogs that reportedly worked on the ground after the towers fell. Other dogs are said to have served as therapy animals, helping survivors and first responders deal with the emotional trauma. Another example was Roselle, a dog who seemingly guided Michael Hingson, a blind man, safely out of the building during 9/11. Reportedly, the other dogs associated with the rescue efforts during 9/11 are Bretagne, Riley, Appollo, Sage, Thunder, and Jake, among others. These stories seemed to have served as the inspiration for the film’s portrayal of Tracker and his efforts.
Evan Symbolizes the Heroics of Law Enforcement and Rescue Teams During 9/11
Trapped in the wreckage near Genelle, a police officer named Evan shares words with her as they try to offer each other some sense of comfort amid the unfolding tragedy. While Evan is an imaginary character, he symbolically represents the bravery of many individuals who were on the ground after the towers collapsed. The cops and firefighters were pivotal in the rescue efforts and held the fates of many survivors in their hands. Evan and Genelle hear each other after being hit by the falling building debris. Evan immediately tries to assure Genelle that everything will be alright. She gets emotional, realizing that at least another soul is there with her in this journey.
The narrative portrays Evan as a deeply empathetic man who recognizes his responsibilities, while also living with the fear of certain death. Even though he tragically dies before the rescue team reaches him, his actions play a vital role in Genelle’s fate. If not for him, she may have given up hope much sooner. The story’s realism and authenticity are brought alive by Evan’s presence. Though he is a fictional character, his actions don’t exist in a vacuum. The real-life heroes who rescued several lives during 9/11 are recognized and honored through Evan and his efforts. Ultimately, both Evan and Tracker are more than just individual characters, but signify something real and deeper.
