Netflix’s crime drama series, ‘Turn of the Tide,’ (originally titled, ‘Rabo de Peixe,’) takes place in a small town in Portugal where everything changes when a large shipment of drugs washes up on the town’s coast. Eduardo, Silvia, Rafael, and Carlinhos lead them on a journey of personal and professional struggles. The previous season ended with Eduardo and Carlinhos boarding a ship which is bound for America. It seems that Eduardo’s childhood has finally come true. However, the thing about dreams is that one eventually has to wake up and face reality, and that’s what happens with Eduardo as well. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Turn of the Tide Season 2 Plot Recap
The ship that Eduardo and Carlinhos board is headed for America, but a problem arises when the US Coast Guard boards the ship and takes everyone hostage. Eduardo and Carlinhos spent some time in prison before being deported. One would think that their previous experiences would have taught them something, but it seems that Eduardo has his mind set on going back to America, and he is ready to do it no matter what it takes. He goes back to Joe and asks him what happened to the drugs that he had hidden, and his uncle reveals that Arruda’s brother, Orlando, came by, beat him up, and took all the drugs. Meanwhile, Arruda’s death leads daughter and only child, Silvia, being appointed the new leader of the organization.
Soon, Silvia loops in the rest of the group as well. This includes Rafael, who, in a shocking twist, isn’t really dead. They start to think about the ways in which they can sell off the shipment as soon as possible. However, their plans are extremely short-lived because around the same time, the bigger players in the drug business enter the scene. The Italians, who originally owned the drugs, want them back, and they send Ofelia and Fagner to take care that everything goes smoothly. Now, the group has to find a way of not getting killed while also moving the drugs that are rightfully theirs. Meanwhile, Detective Frias continues her investigation into the group and tries to come up with a way to get them to talk and help her cause. What comes next is pure chaos.
Are Ofelia and Fagner Dead? What Happened to the Drugs?
While Eduardo and his friends try to figure out a way to survive while also keeping themselves from falling into further trouble, things worsen between Ofelia and Fagner. He is angry that Ofelia is giving too much leeway to Silvia and her group and is trusting the people, whom he considers lowlifes, over him, who has been with her and the operation for far longer. He gets angrier when Ofelia tells Silvia that the assignment of getting the shipment from the middle of the sea safely to their safe house was just a test, which she and her friends have passed. It was never supposed to be a one-time thing, and she likes the way Silvia and her group improvised things in the face of danger.
When Fagner expresses his dislike of the matter, she chides him for being useless. Unwilling to work under Ofelia anymore, Fagner decides to prove that she is not meant to be the leader. He calls their boss, who tells him to deal with the problem himself. So, that night, Fagner takes Ofelia to their safe house, where the drug shipment is supposed to be stashed. When they open the shipping container, it is empty. Clearly, this is not the work of Ofelia, because she is shocked by this discovery. But before she can explain herself, Fagner shoots her in the face. But he doesn’t stop there. It seems that Fagner didn’t touch the drugs either. He believes that Silvia and her friends have duped them, so he launches an attack on them.
After chasing after them, he finally finds Silvia at the movie theatre. He assaults her, asking her what she did with the drugs, while she tries to tell him that the drugs were handed over to his men and she has no idea what happened with them afterward. Unsatisfied with her answers, Fagner seems poised to kill her when Eduardo shows up. He attacks Fagner, and as they fight, Silvia shoots and kills him. But that still leaves the question of what happened with the drugs. It turns out that Commander João Canto Moniz, known as the Rockefeller of the Azores, has the shipment now. It is not clear how he got it, but it is confirmed that there had been a mole in Ofelia and Fagner’s operation all along, and they tipped Moniz’s men about it. This also means that Moniz’s image as a philanthropist and a connoisseur of art is just for the public, while in reality, he is a drug lord.
Is Joe Dead? Does Eduardo go to Prison?
Fagner had never particularly liked Eduardo and his gang, so after killing Ofelia, he decides to do away with them as well, mainly because he thinks that they have taken the drug shipment. At the time, the group is at the town fair, and Fagner and his men barge in, guns blazing. They start shooting at everyone, and while their target is Eduardo and his group, they don’t care if anyone else becomes collateral. Silvia, Rafael, and Carlinhos run from him and find shelter in a house. To smoke them out, Fagner lights the building on fire. When he sees the shadows of his targets moving around, he and his men enter the building to finish the job. Meanwhile, Eduardo and Joe arrive at the scene as well.
They enter the burning building to find their friends. Eduardo eventually finds Silvia while being in the projection room, but when he comes out of the door, he discovers that Fagner’s men surround him and his uncle. Seeing that there would be no way out without getting shot, Joe made a tough decision. He pushes Eduardo into the room, locks the door, and then uses a grenade to kill everyone in the vicinity, including himself. He sacrifices himself to save his nephew, while also making it clear in his last words that Eduardo should not strive for the life that his uncle led. While Eduardo is heartbroken about Joe’s death, he doesn’t get much time to mourn. He hears Silvia’s cries for help, which leads him to Fagner, who is eventually shot dead by Silvia. As the police sirens are heard outside, Eduardo makes a quick decision.
He asks Silvia to hand the gun to him, which means that he is ready to take the blame for Fagner’s death. She is too much in shock to oppose him, while also realizing the sacrifice he is making for her. When the cops arrive, they find Eduardo with a gun in his hand and Fagner’s dead body at a short distance. Eduardo is arrested and taken into custody. It is not revealed what charges are levied against him, but clearly, he pleaded guilty to the crime, and there is a chance that the argument of self-defense worked to some extent. In the next scene, the show takes a time jump, and we see Eduardo come out of prison. Considering that Silvia has given birth to a boy, who is now at least 2-3 years old, it seems that Eduardo received a lighter sentence and is now free from prison, ready to take the next step in his life. The problem is that his next step is towards revenge, and it does not bode well for anyone, especially him.
What happened to Mariana?
While Eduardo and his friends delve deeper into the world of crime, Detective Frias makes concerted efforts to catch and stop them. At one point, she even gets Eduardo to become her informant, but the plan eventually fails. In the midst of all the ups and downs in her investigation and her career, she seems to have no time for her personal life. She is separated from her husband, who now lives in Lisbon. At the beginning of the season, she sends her daughters, Mariana and Sarah, to live with their father. However, Mariana is not too keen on living with her father, especially when he is with a different woman now.
Mariana returns home, and despite her mother’s suggestions to go back to Lisbon, she is adamant about staying in Rabo de Peixe. As things intensify in her case, Mariana becomes completely engrossed in her work, though she promises her daughter that the case will wrap up soon, and then they can have some quality time together. While her mother is at work, Mariana goes to a waterfall in the woods. She has a nice time swimming around in the pool, but at the end, she realizes that she is being watched. Her watcher is not revealed, but the look on her face suggests that she isn’t too concerned.
Later that night, when Frias comes back home, she finds the front door open. She becomes immediately suspicious, and sure enough, the house shows signs of a fight. What’s worse is that her daughter is nowhere to be seen. Does this mean she is dead? Most likely not. There is a chance that someone in the drug business, who saw Frias as a threat, decided to get the upper hand on her, and they had the detective’s daughter kidnapped. It is also possible that the watcher was a psycho-stalker who set his eyes on Mariana and now has her. Since there is no dead, and no sign of blood or any other fact to suggest that Mariana is dead, it is fair to assume that she is still alive and is being held captive.
